  • -Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore star in Todd Haynes' May December, available to stream on Netflix.
-Portman and Moore discuss the tight 23-day shooting schedule and why the script resonated with them.
-They also share which roles they were most anxious to film and why.
In Netflix's May December, director Todd Haynes spins a gut-churning true-crime narrative into a dramedy starring Natalie Portman and frequent collaborator, Julianne Moore. The two actresses tell a story based on the first-ever script by Samy Burch that Portman tells Collider's Steve Weintraub is found "between the lines" of the script.
In the film, Portman plays actress Elizabeth Barry who's determined to nail a character that exists in what she describes as the "morally gray" areas of life. In order to do so, she spends time with the subject of her next role, Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Moore), a convicted criminal who seduced and raped 13-year-old Joe Yoo, who she eventually marries. The two raise their children in a domestic life that turns the stomachs of the public with a sick, tabloid fascination, but cracks begin to surface with Elizabeth's presence as she studies their relationship.
During their interview, Portman and Moore discuss the script, how "deceptively simple" it appeared on the page before filming, and finding the moments of "unspoken conflict and drama" on set. They talk about how they pulled off the shoot in under 30 days, why having such a tight schedule can be a good thing for the cast, and which roles throughout their careers scared them the most. Amazing movie by two amazing actresses. This interviewer is very awkward. What silly generic questions to two of the smartest women we have. Do some homework. Go a level deeper. Listen to some podcasts to understand how to have real conversations

well... you say you love the script never demonizes anyone... but uuuh. we SHOULD. julianne moore's character is a vile predatttor. if that is something that isn't clear to people, it's because of her manipulation skills. make no mistake she knew exactly what she was doing. she is an awful human being the movie is just amazing at showing us in stead of telling us. it's subtle ways to show how much she is in control and have ruined her husband - who was a literal child.

Despite the great acting (Charles Melton especially) I didn’t like this movie. It wasn’t enjoyable, didn’t reveal any new dynamics. We knew the boy had arrested development, we knew the woman was a narcissist who couldn’t take responsibility for her part in it. I was bored and I guess I’m alone in this bc I’m so surprised by the rave reviews.

This movie is not a biopic or study of a real story so it didn't have the intention to ''reveal'' anything. It's not ''based on'' but ''inspired by'' the story (albeit heavily). It also added another element of subtly mocking the type of 'ego-centric 'artists'' who care more about the role than the real people behind it. I also don't think you're alone in your perception simply because you're not that unique. I admit that I also was bored at times, sometimes it made me uncomfortable (which was the purpose) even though utimately I consider it to be a good movie.
