      I think it kinda depends though. I think I got really really cheap watercolors, probably worse than Crayola's and they were CHALKY. I hate the texture. The texture on the paper would be like if you scratched your nails on a chalkboard. It feels so weird compared to more mid priced watercolors which feel flat.

    • @lara-chan7482
      @lara-chan7482 Год назад +152

      uhhhhrg. Not the chalky school watercolors,just the thought sends shivers down my spine, touching that stuff was the worst. Thinking about it they were the worst in general. They don't blend,they don't do well for glazes,they never give a smooth wash. I'm almost convinced we only had to have them cause they were opaque if used 'proper' and washed out of clothes somewhat decent, in which case I'd say give those poor kids some gouache.

      I worked as a substitute art teacher for awhile & know what u mean. Sometimes a school art dept has a limited budget & has to settle for lower quality stuff in order to get enough quantity to last out the year.

    • @puwussssyyyy6653
      @puwussssyyyy6653 Год назад +166

      @@A-Minor-Music that's more than understandable. That said, some students are obviously a lot more dedicated to their work and not using art as a "goof off" class. Many of these dedicated students are willing and able to spend a few dollars at Micheals for their own watercolor sketchbook. If OP's teacher had just given them a bit of advice instead of making them feel like it was their fault (aka making them feel poorly abt their art) I think that would have made a substantial impact.

      It’s honestly lucky that your school budgeted money for art supplies and a class, at all. Many can’t afford it, or the teachers and students families are responsible for providing supplies. It’s a huge issue that schools suffer from funding issues. Maybe something you could advocate for, and consider when voting for the officials who make these decisions on how much they get/where it’s spent. We really need more people who care ❤

    Thank you for the advice. I've been questioned by my mother for decades about supplies and costs. When I was in highschool I loved the Prang moist watercolors. I could get the thin pastel colors with water, or a deep solid color, or thick enough to be shiny. One surrealist picture due I thought of the nightmares I had from the Amityville Horror movie, (it was new at the time). And I had a wall of mini pictures, with exposed hanging wires, and blood running down the wall from the nails. The Prang let me get it thick enough the blood was shiny down the wall and puddled at the bottom. The teacher didn't expect that from a “nice girl”... 🤣 The wall was baby blue, the carpet was navy blue, from an 8 color set. Now I can't find Prang at back to school sales time, or any other time. I tried some different watercolors from Walmart, not as versatile as the Prang, can't get a wet look. But there's more colors. And it has to be good paper, you don't want it to warp while you're painting. 🤦‍♀️ Check your pounds before buying, 140#.
    Take care, stay safe, have a nice day.

    A lot of the differences in cheap vs expensive supplies comes down to archival factors in many cases. When learning, it isn’t worth worrying about whether or not the piece will last for a hundred years.
    The paper really is the key for watercolor, though. A lot of people get a terrible impression of the medium due to using the wrong paper. I hope one day crayola comes out with an ok-ish watercolor paper to make children’s first experience with the medium less traumatizing because parents and teachers justifiably don’t know what paper is going to work best.

    It’s also a lot easier to slowly upgrade your paints and brushes too! Start with a set you can afford (usually student sets are the best value for money) paint with them and as you get better you’ll start to naturally realise what you do and don’t like about your materials. You’ll start to get preferences for certain colours and brushes and those are the ones you wanna upgrade. It’s much easier to get 1 or 2 colours of professional paint you use a lot, than a whole set to realise you barely use some of the colours. You’ll see way more benefits upgrading things slowly.
    For me i always prioritise getting expensive white oil paint. Because I’m using so much and mixing it with pretty much every colour it really lifts up other cheaper paints.

    Usually you won't see a huge difference in the paint immediately, but if you give it time you will. Crayola paint/markers pigments deteriorate very quickly, while the better paints/markers won't. For practicing, or for something you don't mind fading over time this 100% works though. Great tip.
