What do you think of storing your bee hives in a cold garage or basement for the winter, keep the hive at a constant temp with no sudden changes and you can start them early in spring
I want to Thank you for your video's, they are very informative and realistic with prices and doing things simple but most times more productive. Someone had told me I had to use a special kind of bee Supply bleach which of course the stores are very very proud of it so charge arm and two legs. You are using just plain bleach right? No fragrance or anything just bleach from grocery store right? Also do I rinse them off or anything before I dry them? Sorry for all the questions,, I'm 52 and just starting this. I have always wanted to keep bees but took this long to do it. I'm going to get in touch with you if possible,, not to bug you but to try and purchase some things from you later. Once again thanks for sharing your knowledge and when I get into a better situation and can, I will share a little green your way cos I know it cost you to do this.
Hey Don, how do you go about cleaning plastic foundation. I know you don't usually use it, and I tend not to either. But I have a bunch that I had from early on that I'd like to clean up and just have on reserve in case I ever do decide to use it or feel I need it. Would it work to just put the whole frame in solar wax melter? I tried scraping it and that sucks! What about submerging in hot water?
Don I did the chlorox water to my frames. Love it. Thanks. Inherited dads bee frames and many have places where moths have eaten into wood. Is it ok to sand down these places to smooth out surfaces? I hate to throw them away....Thanks for all your wisdom !!!!!
I use bleach to clean coral for my saltwater tanks. Rinse it with fresh water after bleaching and no problems. If it doesn't kill saltwater fish in a reef tank, i doubt the bees will notice. The key is to rinse the sodium off after bleaching (for fish tank.. may not be necessary to rinse for bees).
The smell doesn't bother the bees, actually they like it apparently, that's why they always go drink water from the nearby swimming pool rather than the water we provide to them.
Hello Don, Doesn't bleach leave a residue? Did you lose any bees by soaking them like this. I have some frames that came out of a hive where bees had a touch of nosema. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance beesbuzz52
I was very curious about the use of bleach to clean the tables. Bees do not smell it? Sodium hypochlorite leaves no residue? You heat the water? I am a beekeeper who lives in central Brazil. I have some videos on my channel bee.
I've seen videos of people using filthy frames: gross. Would it be excessive to clean them after each use and before introducing them into a box for a new hive?
Love everything you post! I have a couple of questions...how long do you leave the frames to soak, and do you rinse them afterwards? Thanks for passing your knowledge along to the next generation!!!
@@pantera3336 Once rinsed, the amount of residual bleach is negligible and certainly less than that in the water bees bring back from swimming pools and hot tubs.
I have some boxes and frames that have been in an old tobacco barn. they are in great condition with no discoloration however a bit of dust , do I need to clean them before I use them or should they be fine to use right away?
Don, do you use Honey Bee Healthy (or lemon grass oil and spearmint) in your sugar syrup and pollen patties when you feed bees? If so, how do you respond to people like Michael Bush who say that 6 of the 7 components in Nasonov pheromones are also present in lemon grass oil and that all essential oils kill some of the 8000 microorganisms in the delicate hive ecosystem? [I am a newbee and have been using Honey Bee Healthy and Mega Bee Patties (both of which contain Honey Bee Healthy) for the past 4 months with great success--going from 2 nucs and a queen to 4 good hives, boiling with bees.] What are the dates and costs of your classes?
After you cut the old combs out of those frames, do you just manually scrape off the remaining wax? What tool do you use to get the grooves completely cleaned out?
Bleach is not used in swimming pools it`s too dangerous and easy to get the mix wrong. What they do use is chlorine tablets in small measured quantities according to the volume of area to be treated.
Jack, Most swimming pools use chlorine liquid as well. The concentration is solely dependent on the pool maintainer's ability to measure the appropriate amount of chemicals. As for the bleach in the frames, the chlorine dissipates rater quickly. Heck, some beekeepers even use chlorine bleach in their bee feed to prevent fermentation and mold.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You don't need to wire frames, instead just drill a hole or holes in the top bar preferably the size of a bamboo Barbecue sqewer and push them to the bottom of the frame, much quicker and cheaper!!!
For everyone asking: How long do they soak? Do you rinse them off? He answers on another video that he does 10-15 minutes of soaking and then rinses them with a water hose. ^w^

What happens to the fishing line that you use to hold the wax foundation on the frames?
i bought two used hives cheap but i think one had a bit of wasp killer sprayed in it is it trash or cleanable??? btw luv the videos
Wow great result!
Can pallet wood be used for any part of the hive
Couldn't you use Borax to clean these as well?
Thankyou for this!
How do you rotate frames in the bottom brood box?
Thank you for all your informative videos Fat Mee Man
What is the bleach to water ratio and how long do you let them soak? How do you clean plastic foundation?
Hello from Hellas(Greece) Thank you for the videos
glad you enjoy them

Hi Don: After bleaching and rinsing how long do you wait before you use the frames in a hive so that the bleach smell disapates?
The smell doesn't bother the bees, actually they like it apparently, that's why they always go drink water from the nearby swimming pool rather than the water we provide to them.
no it won't, bees clean it all before making honey inside a comb.
They need salt like chlorine and bleach is basically saltwater turn chlorine. They love it
How long is the bleach in the bucket good for?
Hi, was wondering if you leave wax in the frames and soak in bleach solution, Any ideas on that ? Jerry
I always remove the wax and save it
Thanks!
How long do you soak each side Don?? Thanks for the videos.
about 10=15 minutes depends on how dirty they are
Hello Don,

Bleach? After all my years of fighting wax mouths.
I've seen videos of people using filthy frames: gross. Would it be excessive to clean them after each use and before introducing them into a box for a new hive?
I clean them all
Thank you Don.. the kids say, hello Fat Bee Man!
Love everything you post! I have a couple of questions...how long do you leave the frames to soak, and do you rinse them afterwards? Thanks for passing your knowledge along to the next generation!!!
Do you remove the wire from the frames? Can I put frames with wire into the bleach?
we remove wire from frames or it will rust
Hi I heard you say the holes are for pins do you have a video for that? We cut wire out of them.
the holes in the side of frames are for wire or bobbie pins to hold in foundation
Don The Fat Bee Man ok I get it we need to watch your video on running the wire
Will this work on frames with plastic foundation still in the frame? Thanks.
yes why now scrap off old wax first
Bleach may clean it but bleach soaks into plastic. Probably not the best for honey or bees
@@pantera3336 Once rinsed, the amount of residual bleach is negligible and certainly less than that in the water bees bring back from swimming pools and hot tubs.
Hi Don, would you rinse with water after soaking in bleach? Thanks
Can u clean the frames with the wax foundation in it. thanks
I would remove it

For how long
I have some boxes and frames that have been in an old tobacco barn. they are in great condition with no discoloration however a bit of dust , do I need to clean them before I use them or should they be fine to use right away?
I would use clorex on them to be sure
Great, Thank you .
I love your videos and I'm looking forward to catching a swarm for this spring.
Nice
is the bleach not toxic to the bees?!

Would be nice to know the actual breakdown of water vs bleach.
thelawnguy I've read in the past, 1 part bleach to 5 parts water, but I personally have not tried it yet.
He said 1 cup bleach 5 gall water
i thank you for this tip we did this and made a video worked grate
thanks I share what works
I love your videos!!! I am a new beekeeper and your are a huge help and a great source of information.
Get well soon!
Tim
How long do you leave them in the solution?
swampwater07 10-15 minutes
After you cut the old combs out of those frames, do you just manually scrape off the remaining wax? What tool do you use to get the grooves completely cleaned out?
Will the bleach affect the bees? If so do you run the frames under fresh water? if not how long before you can add them into the hive again?
Olie
no bleach wont hurt the bees we use after 15 min I never rinse them, bees go to swimming pools it don't hurt them
Oh ok

Is that 100% bleach or mixed with water?
One cup of bleach, my error

explain this a bit more please?
Pressure wash at car wash
can this be done for frames that mice have been in for a while....
Sure.
Thank you for the information. It's everything I needed to know to clean up my frames.
Nevermind, I found it on your other video about how to clean wax off the frames.
Soak 10-15 minutes a side, as per a buried question and reply from Don The Fat Bee Man regarding time.
Just what I was looking for!
30 minutes
For everyone asking:
How long do they soak?
Do you rinse them off?
He answers on another video that he does 10-15 minutes of soaking and then rinses them with a water hose. ^w^
