- Tony Gilroy had never ever watched Star Wars when he was hired to "fix" Rogue One and that's probably the reason why Kathleen Kennedy called him. She only hires Star Wars hater.
Tony Gilroy on "The Moment with Brian Koppelman" podcast on 4/3/2018
That must be why Andor is some of the best Star Wars ever created
Truer words have never been spoken. ;)
Overrated SW spin-off about clear revolution without SW lore, which shows us nothing of new about rebels and empire. Just crying about hard arms of empire from most important character like Mothma and Rael.
Only Siryl Carn is favorite cause he's a portrait of honest man of empire. And his line with Dedra of course
It's just a shame that a project like this has to enter the ridiculous world of childish Star Wars to find the budget... Andor is up there with Blade Runner, Matrix, etc
Lmao you're a bozo. As a standalone show, sure. As a star wars show, it's mid as hell.
@@Uchiha-fi4ij lmao as a star wars show its HBO quality compared to other star wars media which is mediocre to okay at best
Jar Jar Abrams with yet another uniformed video, getting more and more clueless as you go, dude. Andor is genuinely a great show. Now you're just trying to make everything that isn't Lucas look bad.
What's wrong with the video? You're hearing it straight from the horse's mouth.
Disney-Lucasfilm needs no help to look bad compared to George Lucas.
Andor is yet another Kathleen Kennedy project, made for people who hate Star Wars and takes a dig at the fans in every scene, and caters to the woke degenerates.
@@JarJarAbrams You didn't watch Andor, then. Got it, all I needed to hear.
@@JarJarAbrams You are mentally ill. The culture war has rotted your brain .Woke this, woke that.
@@hihihi1q23 You are completely desensitized to woke shit because they've been pumping so much of it. Now you will accept anything as long as they don't scream girl power in your face every 30 seconds.
@@JarJarAbrams where it takes digs at fans?
That’s exactly why Andor is actually good.
Is that why nobody's watching?
@@JarJarAbrams what, the kids? Speak for yourself
@@JarJarAbrams like it or not, TONS of adults are watching it and loving it because it has nothing to do with woke or anti woke children
@@larrote6467 "TONS of adults" Lmao talk about delusional. Andor ratings are at rock bottom. It doesn't even make the top 20 on the Nielsen charts. A Star Wars show is losing to garbage like She-Hulk. Barely anyone outside a small vocal group of fans is watching it.
@@vanlande5772 is that why every single week all sites get flooded with 5 star reviews? is that why the show is on the top 2.7% with a demand 31.8x higher than the average US show? Is that why the Nielsen ratings report it as the #9 most watched original show? you are just as idiotic as the sjw's: you see what you want to see
Is your channel just dedicated to taking old clips out of context and spreading disinformation or bad faith critique through them? You've been doing this for years now - I miss it when you just used to post George Lucas-based content and interviews.
Ding ding
Chris Avellone wasn't a Star Wars fan before making KOTOR 2 and yet he made one of the best videogames ever. Same with Gilroy and Andor. He may not be a huge SW fan, but he hired Beau Willimon (creator of House of Cards) who's a HUGE Star Wars fan to co write the series and this way they managed to get a great balance between a new prospective and keeping it in the SW feeleing. And they're both incredible writers and it shows, this series reminds me of the best of the Expanded Universe.
But after seeing your comments you probably didn't even watch it, you hate it just because Disney made it, and apparently you cannot even handle the existence of two lesbian characters since you called it for "woke degenerates"
A videogame creator generally likes space, sci-fi and fantasy. Tony Gilroy hates all of that and it shows. And his woke characters and feminist narratives only adds insult to injury.
@@JarJarAbrams Please explain. Where do you see his hate for sci-fi? Quite a few people criticize the show because it's too sci-fi actually. How are his characters woke? They are all well written and nothing is forced, please enlighten me on why you hate them
@@Oznerol3 There's no sci-fi at all. Most parts of it look like it's set during WW2. There's no technology, they don't even have holograms.
As for the lesbians, how is it not forced? What's the point of this lesbian couple out of nowhere? And the rebels and prisoners should be full of aliens. Instead you only ticked every human race for diversity and representation.
@@JarJarAbrams Did you miss like all of the Coruscant scenes? The prison in the last three episodes that looks like it came out of THX-1138 (George Lucas' first sci-fi movie)? The planet at the start of ep1 with strong Blade Runner vibes? All the galactic politics? That shit is as sci-fi as it can get. And SW took inspiration from WW2 since A New Hope, plus they have holograms: you see them around on Couscant, in the Corporate HQ and in the ISB meeting room.
The point of the lesbian couple is to have a relationship between two team members, and it does a great job at developing these characters because one of them (Cintra) puts that relationship aside in favour of the cause while Vel doesn't want to. It makes you see how far some people are willing to go for the rebellion, it creates tension between the two and you feel sympathetic for Vel. If instead of Cintra we would've had a male I bet you wouldn't be on the internet whining about two characters being in love.
It's funny that you complain how the prison is too diverse, while it has zero women. It could be that *gasps* it's a human male prison only and the human females and aliens are in the other prisons we see. Literally every viewer understood that.
Yes they could've had alien main characters, that's my only complaint about the show, but Gilroy said having one would bring in too many new themes like racism and it felt that the plot had already enough things going on, and I understand that. And anyway we see a lot of aliens in the background on Ferrix and especially in the Coruscant underworld so they're not completely absent from the story.
@@Oznerol3 Coruscant looks nothing like Coruscant. they made it look like NY from above, and like some soviet city from the ground. There's no sci-fi like Star Wars. The setting had to be futuristic since it's Star Wars but it looks just like a modern contemporary city. Only the prison look like THX and that's it.
Everything is like it's in the early century, they have human labor instead of robots, it's very unimaginative.
The lesbians are just a box they ticked for brownie points from the woke audience. Brings absolutely nothing to the story and is distracting and odd.
It's funny that Gilroy pretends he didn't have aliens because the racism theme would be too much. Didd you forget Andor literally gets insulted by racist guys in the bar? And then he gets racially profiled at the beach.
Tony Gilroy is a dishonest asshole.
Andor is star wars for people who don't like star wars. Even if they liked how star wars made them feel as a kid. A part of them can't accept that starwars has always been a series for the "the kid in all of us"
Tony and his brother are the only redeeming quality of Disney Star Wars, without their work it'd be completely hot dog water.
That's OK. Star Wars doesn't appeal to me much right now, either.
Irvin Kershner didn't either and he made Empire Strikes Back
It's a George Lucas movie. George Lucas wrote it and executive produced it. He was on set all the time. He was the showrunner.
@@JarJarAbrams bullshit. Lawrence wrote the movie. George Had almost nothing to do with it because he actually hates writing and directing a movie
@@joel5135 yeah but he is in charge of the overall story
@@alexdean9287 nope. george himself said that he hardly had anything to do with episodes 5 and 6 and that he didn't want to experience that again. That's why he sold Star Wars completely and didn't just let others make his films. because he knew that he would be on the set every day again, although he hardly has anything to do. and he didn't want that because he was having a daughter at the time
@@joel5135 George wrote it, Kirshner directed. No need to try to discredit either of them.
Better to be honest and creat the best star wars movie since episode 6
Than pretending to be a fan ( like jj Abraham and Ryan FU Johnson) and almost destroy the franchise
He didn't make Rogue One. He came to a finished movie, there was already a director's cut.
@@JarJarAbrams Tony Gilroy is the best thing to happen to Star Wars since Revenge of the Sith. It doesn’t matter if he likes it or not, he’s a professional who does a good job for the audience regardless.
JJ is not a fake Star Wars fan. He likes Star Wars so much that he put R2 D2 easter eggs into a friggin film about Kirk, Bones and Spock.
Rian Johnson is the most talented director to ever work on Star Wars. The fact that he couldn't make it work is a testament to how garbage Star Wars is.
@HorkBork M Nice troll attempt lmao. Ryan Johnson is good at visuals, ill give him that.
Well to be fair...
Nobody involved in this modern era of Star Wars seems to like it. That's just the case we're dealing with right now...
That's the only thing consistent with Disney Lucasfilm.
JJ likes it. Although it's possible he doesn't anymore after having to over correct for TLJ.
I remember when he was doing Star Trek, he said very clearly that he hated Star Trek, because he was a big fan of Star Wars.
@@Mephilis78 Why do you think he didn't direct episode 8?
@@JarJarAbrams What? What do you mean why do you think? Because it's true? What the hell are these questions? You always find a way to say some dumb shit like this.
@@freedomvideos2156 You think if JJ loved Star Wars he wouldn't have asked to direct all of the sequels? instead he was relieved when TFA was out and he could just leave.
Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams are die hard Star Wars. Look what they made.
Tony Gilroy isn't a SW fan at all. And he made the best piece of SW since OT.
Lucky you, Tony. The amount of drama happening in the fanbase and the creators has gotten worse. At this point, it’s a blessing you don’t have to find yourself involved in this dysfunction.
Kathleen Kennedy only hired either directors who outright hate Star Wars or directors who hate Star Wars but pretend they love it.
I mean look, Gilroy doesn't sound great here, mostly because it shows he was selfish and egoistic during the making Rogue One, but his perspective could've easily changed since then, and when being hired to create Andor, who knows how his tastes evolved in regard to appreciating Star Wars? This clip is from March 2018. He didn't start working on Andor until 2019 - 2020. And besides all of this, Andor is a fantastic show, and shows a far deeper understanding and respect of Lucas' craft than most other writers and directors under Disney-Lucasfilm; this is because no matter his tastes, Gilroy is a good screenplay writer and filmmaker who truly has a firm grasp of the art form, and knows how to study it.
Gilroy spoke his mind in this interview because he was free from Disney. But then got hired for Andor later. Now he wouldn't be so casual about hating Star Wars in public since he's employed by them again.
I like the 3 first Bourne movies. Then there's Bourne legacy and Andor. Makes me wonder about his actual contribution to the success of the series. It's based on novels, so the story was already written by someone else.
@@JarJarAbrams He never said he hated Star Wars. All you’re arguments are in bad faith. Lol have you seen Michael Clayton? It’s a fantastic movie. Also you know Andor was also written by Beau Willimon and who also wrote House of Cards and Dan Gilroy who wrote Nightcrawler. Both great pieces of media. They made Andor which is beloved by both fans and critics alike so idk what you’re so angry about. Not enough brain dead fan service and cameos in the show for you maybe?
@@emilianomartorell3587 He hates the genre, he hates space fantasy. George Lucas wanted to hire david Lynch for ROTJ, but Lynch didn't understand Star Wars and had no appeal to it, he was honest enough to admit it and refuse. Then he made Dune and you see what happens when someone makes a movie in a genre he doesn't like.
@@JarJarAbrams please show me a source where he uses the word hate. There’s a different between hate and not being a fan. I’m not a Harry Potter fan and it doesn’t appeal to me but that doesn’t mean I hate it. You know Chris Avellone? He wasn’t a Star Wars fan and he ended up making KOTOR which is some of the best SW media there is. Where’s your video on him then? And then there’s Filoni who’s a devout fan for decades who has made some of the crappiest Star Wars content.
Which means you’re some nutcase whiner who only has bad faith arguments. Look I hate Disney too but I’ll give praise where praise is due. Your attacks on Andor have no nuance to them which means that people probably shouldn’t take your opinion seriously
Honestly, between self-proclaimed fans who are generally incompetent storytellers and competent storytellers who aren't invested in the universe, all steered by agenda and profits-driven "leadership", I just don't care about Star Wars anymore. And this used to be _the_ franchise of my childhood and teens.
Maybe if you'd watch this freaking show, you'd get why this attitude in the video is the right way to be.
@@Mister_Jay_Tee If it weren't on Disney+, maybe I would.
That franchise was Star Trek, for me. However, when they started killing Trek in 09, I started to lean more heavily into Star Wars (which I always liked, just not as much). I remember the announcement that Abrahams was going to be making episode 7 and thinking "oh man, here we go again"
@@ironcladnomad5639 Watch it on ABC, Freeform, Hulu, FX, then? Take your pick lol.
SW is woke
It’s always good to hear people who had something to do with a franchise say they’re not fond said franchise. They’re really getting those who care about this franchise to be a part of it. I wish Gareth Edwards version was shown for us all to see. Probably would be better than what we know now.
Seems like everyone who were hired when Disney bought Star Wars also couldn't care less for the franchise. They probably had to read the CliffsNotes of Star Wars in general and just wrote or directed whatever and called it a day. Also spewing out a new Star Wars movie or show multiple times a year like it's a production line similar to Marvel doesn't help either. That was enough to drive me away from Star Wars for good, don't even feel like checking it out anymore.
A lot of people say that we need Star Wars fans to make Star Wars but it’s become clear to me that we need good storytellers to make Star Wars. Leave the lore the to someone else at Lucasfilm. Cuz think about it you could be the worlds biggest Star Wars fan but that doesn’t mean you know how to tell a compelling story
Certainly explains the not star wars feel to it.
Honestly based as hell

I don't think he's watched Andor yet. But this video is about Rogue One
I hate Andor. It's aggressively anti-Star Wars.

Everything Disney has done with Star Wars has been terrible. Its so factory line along with its woke malarkey. What was done to Star Wars by Disney was egregious, but to see it happen to the entire film and television industry really shows how its the indoctrination industry now. There is no point watching anything unless its been vetted 100%. Cancelling subscriptions and not hate watching might be the only options.

I mean there is a difference between hating something but still managing to make something good in the universe like Gilory and Avellon. And Johnson.
Who is Avellon?
@@gbrogo7139Chris Avellone, writer of KOTOR,
People are so desperate for watchable Star Wars content that when something comes out that is not absolute dogshit they prostrate themselves before it like it is some fucking idol. Andor is not the messiah, nor even interesting enough to be a very naughty boy. Like Rogue One and the first two series of the Mandalorian, it shares the appeal of not being out and out excrement. In less mediocre times than our own Andor would have the functional appeal of used toilet paper. Useful for one brief moment but not something you want to keep around. This is where we are ladies and gents. The age of the last man. Disney steers us towards its creative vision otherwise known as the abyss.
Hahaha, now I understand why I liked a Gareth Edwards movie, the man who absolutely ruined Godzilla
You dont have to be a Fan or like it to making it, i would say that being a Fan, especially a "Super Fan" can even be a bad thing because you *could* be biased towards it, without approaching in a neutral and professional way.
You just need to understand it and respect it, that's it, like the Empire director for example.
Star wars right now, other than being badly written, is too much about itself, about the "legacy" and cheap nostalgia, its not about actually new stuff that is pushing it forward, its not evolving, so i think that the creatives like Filoni should stay the F away from it, and talented people like Gilroy should making it.
Whoever is handling star wars, I don't care whether they like it or not as long as they're good and respect the lore.
Rouge One is the best Star Wars film since the Disney films released.
What's up with all of these movies/properties being made by people who LITERALLY don't care about the thing they're making!?
I get that it's good to have an 'outsider' perspective sometimes, but this is 'outsider' to the point where it degrades the value of the IP you're working on!
Whatever, when the value of an IP drops far enough, it'll make any dog turd look like a gold ingot.. And to be honest, maybe that's the point :(
I think Kathleen Kennedy's strategy was to cater to people who don't like Star Wars to expand the fandom. So she hired people who hate Star Wars and told them to make it appealing to themselves. It's insane and will alienate the actual fans, but she believes we are too emotionally attached to reject these anti-Star Wars movies and shows.
Have you seen the show? JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson are massive SW fans and they did the degrading.

Maybe it needs someone from outside the tradition to help reinvigorate it with more mature and deeper renditions not thought about prior? JJ, JK and RJ - all claimed to be ardent fans and look ehat that delivered: the most divisive, disorganised, disappointing, unoriginal, sloppy written trilogy in Star Wars history. I actually don't see a problem with what Gilroy states as he has delivered quality Star Wars. Yes, it requires a Filoni or Hidalgo (I know, but he is supposed to provide the Canon quality assurance) to sprinkle the lore in. This is an example of what is known as in business 'open innovation'. Where people across different areas of specialisation collaborate.
