Should I buy the BMW M4 xDrive or rear-wheel drive?

- BMW purists will lament the M4’s addition of xDrive to its portfolio, claiming all-wheel drive ruins the purity of the BMW M experience. However, those purists might be impressed by the versatility and performance of the BMW M4 xDrive.
Drive the standard BMW M4 Competition on a damp day and you’ll soon learn the limits of rear-wheel drive. The M4’s 3.0 liter twin-turbo I6 makes 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque and is easily capable of overwhelming its rear tires, even on dry tarmac. In the wet, it’s a proper handful. However, the BMW M4 xDrive, with the same engine and same power, isn’t. Not only isn’t it a handful, it’s faster and allows you to push it harder.
So with that being said, which one should you buy? The BMW M4 xDrive or RWD? Let's find out!

RWD or xDrive M4? What's your choice?
Neither. Awful front grille. Ain’t ever getting over that. Apart from that, AWD is a mistake. You want a sports car, you only get RWD. Offering AWD dilutes what that car means…
Neither….hate what they did to the front end and it looks.
@@LTHXR-gw8it This is not about the grille. We wanted to focus on the driving part
RWD because its lighter and faster from a roll. AWD is quicker off the line but slower at top end.
if x drive is safer only fools would choose otherwise
XDrive Baby👍the new M4 Competition is the best looking M4 ever. Period😍
Couldn't agree more!
Great video! I am the M3 Xdrive owner and I have not regretted my choice. I think when you determine AWD vs. RWD, there are a lot of factors to take into considerations, not just whether you pursue a pure experience or not. I live in the northeast of the States and I can only one car for now - then for me, XDrive is a much more sensible choice, not only for its performance but for its all season usability. Not saying RWD cannot be used in the winter but AWD definitely seems to be more capable. However, if live in a much warmer area and have extra car to use in cold, wet days, then RWD version also makes sense for its raw M-feeling.😀
You nailed it. For years, BMW fans looked at the competition and said: "Wish we had AWD on our M3s". Now we finally get that choice and it's a good one. So not sure why someone wouldn't pick the xDrive over RWD, especially if you live in a cold climate.
@@bmwblog can you drift it, not just slide it though in the XDrive? Some people enjoy doing some real drifting from time to time... in Mexico... iirc
@@bmwblog Great video btw! I really enjoyed it and could tell you did for sure. M cars kick ass. So great to drive.
I would buy the M4 as a four-wheel drive version. I had the M4 F82 with 600 hp and this has often been at the limit. The new M4 has more grip than its predecessor, but since the all-wheel drive is switchable, I would accept the extra weight. Maybe at some point there will be software on it. 😉
600hp? Did you tune it or something?
Exactly. The grip is super important at that much horsepower. I had problem slipping the wheels even on dry surfaces with the RWD version
@@DaveDVideoMaker Yes. G-Power Tuning. Upgrade-Tubos, HJS Downpipes, Akrapovic Evolution Exhaust. You can find a lot of videos on my channel.
@@bmwblog I can understand well. The performance is almost too high for Heck. That's why I would always take the four-wheel drive now.
@@MforLife It's a no brainer. You're not giving up anything really
Can’t you turn off awd and traction control all together?
The big thing for me is the price difference. Xdrive is much more expensive than the RWD!
Dont even need to watch the video to answer it:
xDrive!
Why? It has extreme torque and acceleration and you can put it in RWD light, which is enough for drifting
xDrive is our first choice also. Very few drawbacks
Except in manual transmission. IF BMW offered the X Drive in Competition form with a manual transmission, then you have a performance car in another level than any of the competing high performance cars that cost $50k more. This is what BMW NEEDS to do.
Not sure the manual can handle that much torque.
XDrive👍
Big improvement Nico👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾. For a change, none of that "Audi is better, MB is better" stuff which irritates to infinity and beyond.
I’m leaning towards the option of an M4 comp in rear wheel drive simply due to the 111 pounds of weight savings that the X drive drags on.
Nothing wrong with the RWD option
Good review but you totally got the back seat part wrong. I have had two full sized adults in the back and went on a 235 mile all round trip and there is plenty of room I do agree if you have non bucket seats in it.It dose compromise on leg room but having bucket sports seats as the back is a lot thinner so there is plenty of room and the only difference between M3 G80 is you have more head room and its four door but for leg room it's no difrent. I had a M8 before the G82 M4 and now that was ridiculous for leg and head room I could only get two small kids in that.
It also depends how tall the adults are. One of us is 6"2 and it was not comfortable being there, even with carbon bucket seats.
@BMWBLOG well maybe you should have stated that 🤔 the adult was 6/2" and people wouldn't think the car is small in the back because its far from small for a two door like I said before it only compromises on head room not leg room or seating capacity
Hello, thank you for this nice video! Since it seems like everyone loves the new M3/M4 Competition and most reviews are about the Competition models, what do you think about the new „regular/standard“ M3/M4? Do you think one could also be fine with them? Especially in comparison with the M340i/M440i and the Competition Models? The standards do also get the option of M-Xdrive, right? Hope to hear from you and kind regards from Germany, Julian
The Competition models are reviewed for views on RUclips. The M440i is a phenomenal drive, especially when left foot braking. Turbo lag isn't felt. Obviously there is one turbo instead ot two.
We drove the regular M3/M4 also. There is a video on the channel. The cars are fine too. Plenty of power, super fun and you can get a manual also in some markets.
The real question is: Having driven both, would the driver get the manual M3/4 or the xDrive version?
Tough one...for a pure classic, manual M3/M4. But for every day usability, xDrive. Unless you're all into manuals, the auto xDrive is perfect
Dude you can make the all wheel drive car rear wheel drive, whats your point ?
Yes, but AWD a bit heavier
Coming from Subaru Sti- The reason I bought 2022 XDrive G82
I can’t wait for the next M2/M2 Comp. The fact that people won’t sit comfortably in the back of an M4, makes no sense to me. Then, I’ll stick with the 2!!
The next M2 is just around the corner. Should be a beast from what we hear
@@bmwblog I expect it with around 450HP (slightly less). I also expect a new Z4M and a GRMN Supra with the same engine, and manual transmission. Definitely, all three should be a beast.
Is that a child seat in the back? I need to buy one that will fit. Any recommendations?
It's a Graco brand, but don't recall the exact model. I can check if need it
@@bmwblog no worries. I can browse their selection. Thank you.
I’m going xDrive.
Good call. What color?
@@bmwblog Mint green.
@@DaveDVideoMaker That's bold. Good for you!
ONLY KNUCKLE DRAGGER's SLIDE ! !
Rear wheel all day.
Why though?
@@bmwblog it's more fun to drive with the back whipping around
@@QinoHighlife7 The M xdrive does all of that. M xdrive goes sideways easily. If you’ve driven the new Ms you’d know. Go drive one
i would go choose the m4 manual with rwd
That's always a good option for pure driving
