Joe was so underrated as a member of Stealers Wheel. He wrote or co-wrote the best songs in the band. And he had a hell of voice. Shame his solo career didn't take off like Gerry's.
I have no memory of this song…maybe it didn’t get a lot of radio time. I heard it yesterday in the ending credits of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, season 5, episode 8. I saw it was Stealers Wheel and was surprised that I didn’t recognize this wonderful song! Glad that I can FINALLY appreciate it. ✨
It was harmonica at 0:20 , but is it Kazoo at 1:00 ? It is such a great song, I love it. Both Joe Egan (L) and Gerry Rafferty (R) were special and both stars, but sadly, they were not really appreciated in 1972 as much as they should have been. I don't really know why, I thought they were just fabulous even when I was just 10 years old. So they made you a star, now your head's in a cloud, Now you're walking down the street with your feet off the ground They read in the press all about your success, They believe every word they've been told. After all you've been through tell me what will you do, When you find yourself out in the cold? When you appear on the stage there's a standing ovation, You really live out your performance, you're the biggest sensation. You breeze through the door and when you take the floor You expect to have it all to yourself. After all you've been through tell me what will you do When you find yourself back on the shelf? You breeze through the door and when you take the floor You expect to have it all to yourself. After all you've been through tell me what will you do When you find yourself back on the shelf?
Come on Joe & Gerry, what about a Stealers Wheel REUNION! The world is ready guys.......let's do it. There were actually TWO versions of the song STAR released through the years and this was without a doubt the BETTER version. The other had slightly less vocals, less piano at the end. This is a great performance and one of the very few of both Joe Egan and Jerry Rafferty together. One of the RARE live shot performances of Gerry Rafferty as well.
ahem...gerry is sadly unavailable these days. Yes I think he was still alive when this comment was made but er...its very odd seeing a comment thats asking for a band reunion from someone who's been dead more than 10 years..youtube comment sections are like a museum.
This was filmed in Germany and the audience seems wooden and disinterested. They obviously didn't care or didn't realize the two absolute legends they were watching.
Agreed, ,it’s in their make up. But get a few Germans together at at beer fest with a few beers in them and they will clap their hands and slap their thighs to any ole crap 🙂
This is a lovely song and a lovely video. But this is totally the typical thing where they mix down the studio recording to have everything except the lead vocal and then play it back on the "live performance" for TV and the lead vocalist does a karaoke to the track. Where's the drummer here? Where's the guy on kazoo? Etc. Again, great upload, lots of fun, but it's TV karaoke.
In hindsight, this song seems like a not-very-subtle jab by Egan at his bandmate in the wake of the huge success of the Rafferty-sung "Stuck in the Middle with You". Rafferty's presence here seems designed to embody the "really leave out your performance" line.
@@steventaylor8876 Thanks Steven, much appreciated. Just getting new band going with big Gerry / Stealers fan. Star is one of the tracks we’re working on. 👍
Such a beautiful performance. I really like the Stealers Wheel
Magnificent that's all I can say, brings back so many memories, great tune.

Absolutely agree - LOVE Joe's voice
it is such a beautiful great song! the beatles would be so proud!
This is one of Joe Egan‘s best songs from the Stealers Wheel’s Ferguslie Park album which was released in 1973.
March, 1974. I was upset that radio didn't give this one the airplay it should have. Memory lane with this one.
Never seen this video before. Thanks for posting it. I love this Steelers Wheel song. It's brilliant.
There's no room here for all the memories this one stirs...wow!!!
Thanks for posting it.

What a perfect song , for a second to last episode of a fabulous television series.
It reached number 25 on the charts I believe. Stealers Wheel are classified as a one hit wonder but they had three songs in the top 30.
It got plenty of airplay back in the day. I heard it all the time when it first came out. I like this one better than Stuck In The Middle With You.
LOVE IT
Love this oft overlooked band.
This brings back memories of wonderful time, great friends and a hell of a lot of fun. Their best song. Thanx Bertha0815007 from 8Moody1
So beautiful! Damn!!
What a terrible waste of talent when Gerry passed. Such a magnificent group and a magnificent leader. Magic song Joe. 😪
Great song. Excellent quality audio and video, thanks for posting.
Amazing
That's one enthusastic audience right there. I think one of them might have moved an elbow slightly.
You're absolutely right, but they just copied Joe Egan and especially Gerry Rafferty.
I seen Stealers Wheel on Pinkpop 1973 or 1974 great band but underrated.
relaxing! Oct 2022 😃😃❤❤👍👍

Thanks for uploading this gem, had forgotten all about it. 👏👏
Wonderful performance. I feel some connection with Chas and Dave.
I love Gerry Rafferty
me too ❤
Boogie!!

They're German's, that's as emotional as they get. Not their fault.

They just try to be as emotional as the artists.😄
The hosts informed the audience that anyone having fun would be shot.
Sounds like Beatles harmony. Great!!!
The first time I heard this, I thought it sounded like something from John Lennon

@richards864 i completely agree. its sad that joe egan is off the map.
❤❤❤❤
Yep
@joevs21001 I'd go see them, Joe, and I'd take along my wife, so that's at least two of us who would be there!
Which one here is Rafferty because I read Egan sang this, his own song?
Gerry Rafferty is on the right hand side of the screen. The one without glasses.

They had such similar voices.
Another way to tell is Joe always looks like he's having fun, Gerry not so much. I don't think he liked playing in front of an audience that much.

Very underrated band. I don't think they worked with the right people. I think they had far more potential than the modest success they had
