It’s a Jordan 1… the fact people perceive these to have premium leather is evidence to how syrupy the Nike sauce is. You can’t tell the people in sweatsuits the koolaid is poisoned when they’ve already downed the cup and licked it dry.
Maybe a better comparison would be to compare it with other Jordan 1 Hi 85; for example, compare them to the “Neutral Grey” or the “Bred Varsity Red” then you will be comparing Apple to Apples #justathought
I'm not a leather expert but I personally know leather quality is based on a lot of factors. Is animal, tanning process, material used in dying, grain, length dyed etc
I think it comes down to how long is the shoe going to last. We've seen people wearing actual 85 AJ1s and it's pretty well known that in general an all leather and rubber shoe is going to last a long time as long as it's properly cared for. Also i think Jordan ruins it by putting a polyurethane coating over the leather, if they didn't do that then the leather would be softer, and it would feel more premium, but as is all of their shoes just feel like different softness's of plastic.
The close up around 1 minute in tells you everything you need to know, the little tight grain pattern near the top layer is the full grain of the leather, the most expensive, highly sought after leather type. You can even see the pores of the animal, it’s the toughest you can get. Don’t get confused with top grain and full grain, top grain has been sanded so the imperfections are gone, much like the yellow nubuck pair. You wouldn’t see the pores if they were top grain, the black on the yellow pair is almost certainly cheap split leather as it has a heavy PU tumbled effect. Hope this helps 👍
PS, the thickness doesn’t dictate quality either necessarily, they can give you a really thick slab of split grain leather with a PU coat on it, won’t last anywhere near as long as full grain 👍there’s a relatively low amount of full grain compared to splits.

I think it’s more matter of opinion on these, I’m late to the party but I prefer very soft buttery tumbled leather, the metallic court purples for example, those are the most comfortable 1 I have right now, but others would disagree. I prefer being able to move my foot around freely in a shoe rather than it being stiff

My guess is the high 85 cut leather just has a thicker coating of plastic over it than the softer typical Jordan 1s. Same shit, different day. Honestly, the only really good leather I came across on my journey was the Silver Toes, Homage to Homes, Shattered Backboards and UNC to Chicago Woman's release. With a few exceptions, everything else either has chemicals in it to make it softer, fake tumbled imprinted wrinkles, or just smooth plastic coated pleather

Most times it’s genuine leather if they even use real leather most times it’s a blend of cheap synthetic mixed with a leather. So it’s a better quality than most. But better than other companies I doubt it. I’d have to get them in hand because I’m a person who has to see them in person versus just assuming people are right or wrong. Hey Hes, I have a question.. with the 85’s is the box bigger than the boxes for normal AJ1’s? Because I got the 85 B/W’s and the box is bigger than the box for all my other 1s. I agree. The materials just look so stiff and hard (yeah yeah, that's what she said, okay) but these look so uncomfortable compared to a "standard" jordan 1. Especially with reviewers saying its tighter around the middle, and possibly sizing up a half size to compensate. Love the colorway of the GeorgeTowns, but the materials make it an easy pass.

For 200$ you can get shoes made from the finest leather there is that no sneaker brand would ever use. Sneaker prices are ridiculous anyway, made from cheap materials in an Asian sweatshop and they sell them for ridiculous prices..... You basically only pay for the brand marketing and not for quality;)

I think people should just stop being so touchy about leather quality on Jordans and Nike sneakers for that matter. We like the Jordan 1s for the silhouette and history (and the hype for some people), not the leather quality. Jordan 1s are probably the worst value propositions for quality in the $150-$200 range and it only gets worse considering that many people are paying resale that is easily upwards of $300 for popular colorways.

The first few were amazing quality and then they slowly just started going back to the McDonald's leather but did not change the price back to the pre remastered price. Some are nice, but the recent playoff 12s were so bad, I returned them. I was absolutely disgusted that the $220 classic shoe that literally says "quality inspired by the greatest player ever".
Nike has it all planned out. They’re purposely using low quality materials and keeping the retail prices the same. We the consumers are then going to complain about the quality not being great. Then Nike will release the “remastered remaster series”. They’ll increase the quality just enough for us to notice but they’ll increase the price significantly higher

Try to compare those AJ1 with redwing heritage boots, you will know which one is having a good quality leather.

Leather quality seems to be identical to most Mids that are out.
