I just made three of these. I didn't know about this video. I managed to make it anyway. My daughter who received one for Christmas says it is like a Mary Poppins bag you can put anything into it. She has two babies under two so really knows how valuable this is.
I purchased the video lessons on,Craftsy & made a beautiful bag. I gave it to my Aunt who adores it! The videos are wonderful! Very easy to follow. Annie is a very detailed instructor..I learned a lot. Thank you Annie for providing great learning opportunities.
+frostynature Thanks for your comments. The mesh really does make a difference in the bulk in the seams. Would love to see a picture of your bag if you make one! Happy stitching. Annie
@Emily - I live in NZ and I've purchased several products directly from them, including patterns. All have arrived quickly (pre-Covid, mind you), were just as described and well packaged. So the short answer is Yes, they do! :-D
I'm a quilter and never sewed a bag. Would like to see a step by step tutorial so that I can see how it's done. I would like for you to make a video tutorial on how to insert a zipper in a suitcase type of bag.
You'll find a complete step-by-step class for the Ultimate Travel Bag on Craftsy. If you sign up through my website, you can get the class at a 50% discount. Go to www.ByAnnie.com/craftsy/ for all the details.
This Video, along with all your others and the 1 Craftsy lesson I purchased are all so full of information. Annie you are a great teacher and I should get on to making some of your projects, not just watching your great videos. :) I appreciate your knowledge and your time taken to make these videos.
I'm looking to make a bag for my vacation in January. I need to know what the finished dimensions are of this bag so that I know if it can be considered a "personal item" or if I have to pay for it as a "carry-on" bag. What are the measurements of this bag?
I love it - but as I have less than 5% vision (it’s very difficult to measure when there’s such little vision - it’s most likely 3%). I don’t really have much hope of selling it myself. Wish you had a website where you could buy them already made - that’s my tip!
The closest thing to this in a smaller version is the Bowl Me Over. It is more of a purse and does not have all the features the Ultimate has. www.byannie.com/bowl-me-over
I really want to take the course in craftsy, but I'm a bit worried whether my sewing machine will be able to sew through the bulk. It's an entry level sewing machine, Brother CS6000i. If I use walking foot and the right size of needle, do you think it will be able to sew through the layers?
Yes, a few things we've heard about though: 1) Canvas usually has a wax coating that doesn't "stick" to Soft and Stable. That can make it a bit harder to quilt or sew on and result in a looser look. 2) There are multiple layers that come together in the edges. Multiple layers of a canvas and Soft and Stable could get quite bulky and be harder to sew. Not undoable, jut more difficult. 2) You can use the pattern to sew the bag without the Soft and Stable structure, however that would be a modification of the pattern and would require some thinking. Also, it would make for a bag that would not stand up and hold its shape. Hope that helps. Be sure to submit you bag to our photo contest when you get it done. www.byannie.com/photo_contest/
Hi! In the begining of the video from 0.18 there is another bag on the shelf in the top left corner of the video. What is it called? and is there a pattern and instructions for it? Thanks
Hi, Rachel: Thanks for your comment. I sew 99% of the time on my older Bernina 1080. I LOVE the #37 1/4" foot on that machine so it is my machine of choice.
I bought a Get Out of Town 2. Bag pattern and watched the videos that I could find but none of them show how to finish the bag by sewing the last side pieces to the main part of the bag, even the pattern does not have any illustrations of the process, it just tells you to match centers and sew it together. There are no pictures of binding those edges. The videos just magically show the bag. Why is that? Is that part hard?
Have you tried writing them an email and asking them about it? They've got lots of vids so they might be able to point you to just the right vid(s) that help. Normally if they don't show something it's because it's already a well-known technique used in their patterns that they've covered in one or more of their vids or the step is done the same way it has been done for other steps in the same pattern. Does it, for example, put on binding anywhere else in the pattern? If so, perhaps you just match the centres of each side and sew them together and then bind it the same way other binding was done? (I don't have Get Out of Town - I've got the UTB and I find that's how that pattern works.)
Sorry for the delay. You can get a discount by using the link on our website to the Craftsy classes. Here is the link to all of our Craftsy classes: www.byannie.com/craftsy
Our apologies for the late reply. Please click on the supply list tab on the product pages to see dimensions and requirements: www.byannie.com/ultimate-travel-bag
Hi Marilyn, our aplogies for the delay in responding. You have a few options for getting the pattern. Your best option is probably to get one of classes with Craftsy. They are available for streaming from anywhere and require no shipping. You can get a discount by using the link on our website. See here: www.byannie.com/craftsy Alternatively, you can always buy patterns directly through our website. We ship internationally.
I purchased this pattern, and am very disappointed in the instructions. I didn’t find them very instructional on each step and not much for diagrams as you normally find in patterns. I’m a intermediate sewer and have made several bags. I’m disappointed that I can’t find tutorials on this bag and certainly don’t want to pay $40 or more for a class to understand the pattern. I already payed a lot for the pattern and materials! Wished I could have preview the instructions before wasting my money.
Hello Melody, thank you so much for buying the pattern and starting to work with it. We are sorry you haven't had success yet. We recommend calling us to see if we can help you get passed your initial challenges. You can find our phone number on the website. We are open M-F from about 9AM to 4PM Mountain. In the meantime, we highly recommend taking 15 minutes to read through the entire pattern. We are confident that that will help you see the full vision.
Love the inside of that bag!

I have all your classes and they are very easy to follow. I made the Ultimate Travel Bag for a baby shower gift as their diaper bag and they loved it
very nice and neat work, well done!
Beautiful bag, well thought out. Great idea on using mesh for pockets. Agree wider straps better for this size bag.
+frostynature Thanks for your comments. The mesh really does make a difference in the bulk in the seams. Would love to see a picture of your bag if you make one! Happy stitching. Annie

Love this bag! Adding to my to-do list. I think the new Rifle Paper Co. fabric line's travel printed canvas would be perfect for this.
