Burim Bunjaku i know the n47 and b47 engines have this problem but it happens on n57 engines although less than in the 4 cylinders, i dont understand how bmw can fix this problem
530d and 540d in fact seem very close in acceleration but we have to consider that these videos were filmed in different days, with different weather conditions, especially wind conditions. The reason for that could be that 540d was filmed with wind against it and 530d with very little wind, or even favourable wind conditions. This could explain the similarities.
how do you know this? It could also be the exact opposite. According the official documents, there's only 1 second difference in 0-60 between the 530 and the 540. They are very close to each other.
@@jemand8462 spoken like someone who's never driven both. I test drove both of them before getting the 540d, difference was very noticeable. And the 540 is a lot better to tune as well.
@@UpsideDownCanoe Since we are all speculating here, I see no reason not to do it myself. in the video we can see that the 40 is faster to 100 by almost 1 second and manages to maintain that initial speed and acceleration advantage all the way till the end of the video. Since the engines are all the same, I think that the twin turbo setup of the 40 helps at low rpms and getting into that sweet spot where you get tons of torque, however once the engine is already in the peak torque rpm range, the 30 is almost as fast with the single twinscroll turbo. The only difference I see is in the initial acceleration, and after that they are pretty much equal (with the 40 being slightly faster after 100 km/h thanks to the additional hp and nm). I would take to 30d, but no doubt the 40d will feel smother especially in town with more usable torque down low, however I don't consider it as a big upgrade from the 30 and probably not worth the $$$$. The 50 on the other hand looks like a beast, almost like a totally different engine, like a v8 or something. The only reason I would dissuaded from buying it is fearing the engine will not handle that much power over the long run and have lots of things go to $hit due to the extra stress on the engine, additional upfront investment as well as additional running costs to take into consideration.
Finally, this video!! I have been searching this comparison for YEARS. Finally somebody has put these four cars head to head and shown the differences from 0 to max speed. I am talking about 5 series in general, not especially G30. I own a 530d and a good friend of mine 535d (both f10), not the G30 from the video. When we went into vacation last summer I was on his tail ALL THE TIME, never felt that I am losing him because of the extra power. He has xDrive which has some extra weight. In this video we see that those extra 55hp and only 30Nm torque don't make the same difference in percentage. 55hp means approx 20% extra power but looking at the speed, the difference is about 5%-7%. VERY interesting. If you look at the video and pause it, it is amazing how 520d until 50-60km/h is the same as the 530d, they are almost neck to neck. Then, we lose the 520d. After that, between 530d and 540d (ex 535d) is about 5-12 km/h difference and at the end, when they reach 250, the 530d reaches 250km/h almost IN THE SAME time as the 535d. M550d ... is from another planet, too powerful, the absolute winner, but ..... please read bellow if you have the patience, I'e put some arguments. My opinion about the engines on this chassis (bmw 5 series f10 or G30) - 520d --> under-motorized - too big of a car and too small of an engine. That engine is perfect for the 3 series. Having this engine on the 5 series is a gesture of ignorance. You bought this car to show off, because you could have done much more good for yourself buying the 3 series 320d. I can't imagine that the extra space was the deciding factor. It was the statute that the 5'er gives you vs the 3'er. People will say ... 'neah, a 3 series, like everybody else', but when they see the 5, the don't look at the engine, Navi business and the rest of the lacking options and they feel overwhelmed & impressed. That, makes you feel good. Can you believe that there are 518d's out there? 520d should only be bought for corporations, as a company car for employees (sales, middle management, etc). - 530d --> obviously the best all rounder - best engine for this chassis, best dynamics and best performance hp per kg. I feel like xDrive is a bit overrated for countries where you have snow ... 2 months per year. It ruins the feeling of being pushed in your chair. Having the best winter tires is more important than having xDrive on all season or cheap winter tires. Also, 1st time owners of a BMW tend to buy xDrive ... because they are afraid. The word was going about 10 years ago that having rwd will spin your car and ... die :). That's why you see a lot of 520xd. Also, having one turbo, should keep the engine alive more km and years. - 535d --> is for those who need that extra strength, which I can understand. At 535d/540d you need xDrive because you can't put the power down and your wheels will spin every time when you kick down below 50km/h. Even above that will spin if it's wet or slippery in any way. Small difference between the fuel consumption, 530d vs 535d/540d but a considerable difference between the price. If I would have the money maybe I would choose it, but ... depends on the need. Depends if the extra 5-6% is worth some 5000-6000EUR .... it is debatable - 550d --> the ultimate overkill. 760Nm is as violent as a brake from the 518d from 100km/h to 0. Amazing car, great package included when you buy it and beautiful sound. The only concern I have, on a long term, are those 3 turbo chargers which are squeezing out all the possible power from that engine. I wonder if it lasts the same as the 530d .... time will tell. Congratulations AutoTopNL for this video and for all the reviews. I really love this channel, everything is well made, no extra talk, no stupid jokes, no 'fancy talk' about some specific brand, etc. Keep up the good work!! BIG LIKE!
Good summary. But you are not right with the argument about the xdrive. When i unplug xdrive on my x3 3.0d i cant even get out of my garage. When i have to stop on a slight uphill where its not only snow i get stuck. Tires are pirelli sottozero 3. weight distribution on the x3 is almost 50/50 as far as i know so still this does not help much. I disconnect the transfercase in summer to reduce wear(abs, dsc, tractioncontrol still remain active) but in winter its quite essential while driving uphill on snow and ice here in austria... Especially when you have to drive slower and cant use the momentum
@PULIX PULIX: So I spent 75k on my 520d just to 'show off' and a 3-series would've been the better choice for me? Interesting how you know what I am looking for in a car, how much space I need, where I drive, et cetera. Your comment is dripping from ignorance and lack of knowledge. And just before you embarass yourself even more: Before this G31 20d I had a F10 30d, that I drove for 4 years and around 130.000km. Oh and btw: The extra weight from xDrive doesn't really affect high-speed-acceleration. It's the extra power-loss through the extra driveshaft that "eliminates" the power. Weight only matters when going slow(er) speeds. @With Style: If you can't get out of your garage without xDrive and when you get stuck on slight uphills when the road is wet, you can't drive. Almost all my friends have sedans and they say that the touring is old and for ... old people. they couldn't be more wrong! Regarding the Xdrive, yes, i agree with you, maybe it doesn't make a difference at high speed acceleration but it makes a difference at low speed, medium speed, etc. The dynamic is different and most important: the feeling. Xdrive is good for snow and if you go faster on dangerous curves on rain. if you paid 75K on a 520d, why that engine and not the 3.0? You mean that you didn't like the performance? The extra torques and horse power were too much? Are you sure there is no financial recurrence involved in taking that decision? How much are the annual taxes on a 530d vs a 520d? i didn't mean to hurt you feelings with my comment, it's just my opinion because ... maybe I just love this 3.0 engine too much and I get a bit ahead of myself. I had an e46 320d before and an e91 320d. Both were great but when my boss got himself an e90 330xd I was just mesmerized. That moment I knew I needed that engine. In a couple of years I bought it and chose the bigger chassis. I have no regrets. I think that is the most important this, no regrets. If you are happy with your choice, great! Peace!
Nice comparison of acceleration. Just what I needed to select between 530d, 540d and M550d, which I'm currently doing. Seems like it is either 530d or M550d, 540d seems pretty small improvement over 530d.
The new 550d is very impressive. But it is really expensive compared to a 540i, which is also extremely fast and easy to tune. If you need a really fast car, go for the 540i. If you want a fast car with low fuel consumption go for 530d.

As you can see torque matters in diesel territory, power difference is massive between 540d and 530d but the accelerations talks differnt.Similar as torque vectors.
GazRwood Nope, torque matters a lot for acceleration, hp is more important for top speed. Tesla’s have insane launches because of how much torque they have.
Nice comparison video 👍 looks like 530d is best compromise. I drive a F11 530dTx stage 1 tuned lifted limiter to 285km/h very happy with it but now looking for the M550D and then stage 1 tune it :).
The test car 530d was a sedan (G30) but the 540d was a Touring (G31) if they were the same body i would be difference than that.. sorry for my English.
I think that comparison is not fair. 540d is significantly faster from 150/160 km/h, so this must be xdrive, which has more kg than version with RWD. 530d in video is RWD and the engine is lighter, so the diference is hughe. That's the reason why you don't see much diference between them.
What would be better, 550D or 530D + upgrade on Turbo and Intercooler/exhaust ? I believe that second option would give +/- same power with less problems .. what You think ? :)
I bought the 530d, because it was the only one with a manual transmission. Really wanted the 550, but I decided sacrifice a bit of power to have the full driving experience instead.
All the test car in this video was a sedan (G30) except the 540d that was a Touring (G31) that's why it's not much difference from 530d. sorry for my English.
Torque is just a component of power. e60 M5 only had 520 Nm, less than the 530d here, but 500hp. Heck the old style 2.4 V8 F1 engines only had 274 Nm of torque, 125 nm less than the 520d here, whilst kicking out 750hp, 590hp more than the 520d.
Phil I see what you mean but I'm talking about acceleration not just getting from meetings and business conferences. If you compare it to the higher displacement engines you can feel that the weight is working the engine hard. It's not meant to be an insult just an opinion
All of you say to buy 530d,i have a 540d sedan, and i need to say its a difference, more torque and more power, but in this case 540d its a touring and 530d sedan with rwd that makes the car weight much lower,so please test drive one and after that comment!
I don't understand why people are surprised the 530d was so close to the 540d. The 530d is saloon, non-xDrive. The 540d is a Touring AND xDrive, so it's heavier with more drivetrain losses so that 55hp difference is less significant.
On the road the 540d bi-turbo is MUCH more powerfull than the 530d. Trust me, go try it yourself all you guys who means that the 530d is the best option.. It is not! It is either 520d full loaded or the 540d full loaded. Don't waste money on the 530d.
Yes, when I drove an X1 20d the 4 cyl surprised me from 0 to 70. But from 100kmh you can really feel that the 6cyl (530d f10) keeps pushing hard until 180kmh while the 4cyl feels « empty » (you feel a net stop in the acceleration). It’s difficult to describe haha
I honestly did not expect the 30d to be virtually identical in performance to the 40d. It seems BMW shot themselves in both feet with that. Why should anyone spend more money on the engine (plus of course uprated standard equipment nobody needs, like bigger wheels) AND increased servicing cost and risk of failure from the second turbo? The 50d may be much faster, but still I struggle to imagine an actual shattering performance advantage in the real world over the 30d (like it does against the 20d). And then it is massively more expensive, AWD as standard, massive wheels, sport suspension, etc. which translates to $$$$$
Come to think of it, there is even a 535d in between. 535 and 540 have always been kind of unpopular engines but they always had their fans in history of BMW 5 series. I remember it was the same with the E39, I've seen like 2 or 3 540 in all my life while most of the people drove 520 and 525s.
First of all, the HPs shown are all off, 2ndly Diesels is all about Torque where max speed is reached below 2K rpm.....this video is pretty silly, doesn't provide any usefull information, can't believe so many viewers.
same engine block, just more turbos as you move up the model range from 530d. Would have been better from an engineering pov to optimize one engine design and give it less power for the 530 and 540 models.

in March they give me my series 5 and watching these videos make me despair more jaja
When u realise 530/40/50d have the same engines just with some extra turbos
@autotopnl - please test the 525d 231HP also, if you get the chance.
530d
M550D💪 monstrous diesel power!!!
Not much difference between 530d and 540d
I think it's because the second turbo is for low range rev to eliminate turbo lag.
The test car 530d was a sedan (G30) but the 540d was a Touring (G31)
if they were the same body i would be difference than that..
sorry for my English.
Only at the start the 540 launches better because 4wd. In Uhr 530 the 4wd is just a option
I think that comparison is not fair. 540d is significantly faster from 150/160 km/h, so this must be xdrive, which has more kg than version with RWD. 530d in video is RWD and the engine is lighter, so the diference is hughe. That's the reason why you don't see much diference between them.
I have the 530d G31. Love it!
550d 0-200kmh 16sec
530d 0-200kmh 23sec
520d 0-200kmh 35sec
Is er verschil tussen 540d en M550d met optrekken?
What would be better, 550D or 530D + upgrade on Turbo and Intercooler/exhaust ? I believe that second option would give +/- same power with less problems .. what You think ? :)
550d
I bought the 530d, because it was the only one with a manual transmission. Really wanted the 550, but I decided sacrifice a bit of power to have the full driving experience instead.
5-series should be bought for driving comfort and luxury, not for driving experience
All the test car in this video was a sedan (G30) except the 540d that was a Touring (G31)
that's why it's not much difference from 530d.
sorry for my English.
Had a 530d pre LCI for 2 years. Now I own a 540d LCI. The 540d is noticeable quicker. Something is wrong with the tested 540d
It's all about torque 💪
Torque is just a component of power. e60 M5 only had 520 Nm, less than the 530d here, but 500hp. Heck the old style 2.4 V8 F1 engines only had 274 Nm of torque, 125 nm less than the 520d here, whilst kicking out 750hp, 590hp more than the 520d.
Sebastian Sellers Thank you Professor 😆
since here are only diesel engines in comparison, your explanation is useless. All in all its right, of course
The best choice is always your choice !
The difference in torque between the 520d and rest is huge
Would take 520d tho. I’m not buying a luxury limousine for speed. Unless if I had the cash for 720LI
you mean 760 Li
Yup, as an F11 535xd owner that was quite interesting. Advantage to 530d is only showing at high speeds, so actually not worth the money.
I have the 530d (2019 build) and its a Twinturbo just like the 540d! Its even the exact 3.0L enigne! Just tweekt..
Michael K ist ein single tubro
265hp = Single Turbo
286hp = BiTurbo
520d is slow as hell big difference with that m550d
BMW M Yeah the 2.0 engine in the car that size is a bit under powered.
TFC might not be the fastest, but nowhere near underpowered imo. It's enough to get from A to B so what would you want more (for the budget)
Phil I see what you mean but I'm talking about acceleration not just getting from meetings and business conferences. If you compare it to the higher displacement engines you can feel that the weight is working the engine hard. It's not meant to be an insult just an opinion
BMW M 34 sec to 0-200 is quite good enough
I wanna see this again but the petrol version and including the M5
M550d my favorite car
530d with full Options. The best Car. With M-Performance Pack 290HP and not slower than the 540d.
And where is 525d with 231hp?
Merry Chrysler
Itz crihzmez
Merry chris hemsworth
Merry crisis
I may be wrong but 550d is TRI turbo, not Quad..... ?
@9s clearly early start for 520d and m550d
Battle of the diesels
530d is the best option for the price. But I'd take the M550d, cause I could
Quite surprised with the 520D, was very similar to the 530D till about 80KMH.
@@RaresEnache Yes I agree, the 4 cylinder engine does not have the same refinement as the 6 cylinder engine at higher speeds.
265hp (530d) vs 320hp(640d) so 55bhp difference and only 8km speed difference through most of the range, quite surprised me.
How about the fuel consumption at different speeds? Would be interested in 150 / 180 / 210 / 250
Really love that 'purr' of a diesel engine...
F10 or G30?
Why they didn't made a 560xD ///M sport with 6 turbo chargers😢 I am disappointed 😔
I'd say mapping a 530d would be fun
easy +100nm... Without any mods just map...
530d>540d
Because it's slower?
@@BFD15i no because the performance gap isn´t big enough for the additional price tag
Pls do 20i - 50i
I'm not sure why BMW even made the 540d. The difference just isn't big enough to justify it.
That is really fast
Are the 30d and 40d really this close? That would be surprising.
I have one... 530d without xDrive in bluestone
you know with 4 turbos id expect the maintenance on the m550d to be stupidly high
nice
The G30 530d seems as fast as an F10 535D... :O
I just bought a g30 530d so you are saying my car is fast as f10535d
@@abcars2856 I think so... almost! :D
Bmw 530d top
550d powerrrr
small difference between 530d and 540d
Золотая середина это 530d оптимальное соотношение мощность цена расход надёжность
правильно))
Quad turbo??
520d is enough.
M550d best
Limo oder Touring?
You got an extra turbo with the 540d, and for what?
What is a Quad turbo
Peter müller it means 4 turbos
filan fisteku Thanks
530d is the best one
And now here i am lost between a 530d f10 or a 535d f10 😬😬😠
535d best option
Fazit: Don‘t buy a 540d
And if i buy one?
În this video the 540d is not sedan, ora touring, the 530d is sedan with rwd that make the car lower in weight
TANKS
Huge difference.
530d оптимально
First of all, the HPs shown are all off, 2ndly Diesels is all about Torque where max speed is reached below 2K rpm.....this video is pretty silly, doesn't provide any usefull information, can't believe so many viewers.
550d is tri turbo not quad
g30 has quad turbos.
@@andersekbladh8084 Yeah you are right
40i die bessere Wahl
530d od this video is not stock.
same engine block, just more turbos as you move up the model range from 530d. Would have been better from an engineering pov to optimize one engine design and give it less power for the 530 and 540 models.
