The way you describe it, it sounds like cavemen did calculus before hitting a rock with a rock

People regularly perform visual calculations when doing many different tasks. If you think about when people throw a ball into a net or onto a wicket they are performing calculation to optimize the arc of the ball. These things are generally intuitive. As a child you learn through trial and error or through extensive observation what the correct arc should be. But if you are leaning these things for the first time as an adult they would not necessarily be intuitive. The explanation here is designed to explain all those intuitive things that an experienced knapper would be performing to people who have never seen or attempted knapping before. So I guess yes they are performing calculus before hitting to rock together but these are intuitive calculations

Is that a park sand box? Shouldn’t be doing it in there, flaking razor sharp rocks were kids play?

John De Leon no not a sand pit in a park. This is the UNE knapping pit. We use sand as our knapping surface as it absorbs the energy of the struck flakes and prevents them rebounding onto other people. This is an important consideration as we conduct many demonstration and classes with people gathered around either watching or trying knapping for themselves. The sand is a safety feature to protect these people. When not in use this pit is covered and has signs warning that it contains sharp objects. So no kids playing here unless they are knapping.
