I have been to Penang and loved the people and food. The variety of food is amazing.
    I could live there.
Although I have retired to Thailand.
What you don't seemed to have mention is visa for retirement in Malaysia. I think you might find that will give you another side of it.

Also, this is kinda gross, but which countries where you can or can’t flush paper down the toilet’s. That’s a dealbreaker for a lot of people, and it’s seldom discussed. Thanks guys and great content!!

The only problem with retiring to Malaysia is the actual cost of the mm2h visa. Having a very large deposit in a Malay bank and being unable to spend it and be at the mercy of exchange rates is a huge gamble.
Perhaps if you're married to a malasian wife then it is different, but for someone like me, single retired male, I would have to put 28 thousand pounds in a Malay bank to even qualify for the visa.
The O visa to retire to Thailand is just a case of proving something around £1600 a month pension income

Hi Dan, I'm considering KL / Penang for senior retirement BUT the current MM2H is a very high bar. Might be easier to base in Thailand/Indonesia and then spend 1-3 month visits to Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia etc. I know that this MM2H might be changed at the end of the year 2023. Thanks for the pragmatic advice: "Boots on the Ground" / "Personal Cost of Living" / "Emergency Fund" warnings.

For about three years Penang was my home away from home and I did it on a tourist visa. for the first year I was going frequently to the U.S., or Japan for work so not a problem. I later stayed there for about a year and a half and there's as Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, were cheap and quick to get to I never was in county more than 60 days at a time. Medan Indonesia is s short, cheap ferry ride from Penang so that can get you another cycle if needed. There's always the possibility you might get denied re-entry if they suspect you are living there, but I would often reserve a resort hotel and not put down my Bungalow address and appear as as tourist. Also avoiding 1-day visa runs and staying outside the country a few might help. As my rent for a 3 bedroom bungalow in Tanjung Bungah, just a few mins outside Penang was only $250/month. If I got denied entry for say 2 weeks or 30 days, I could afford to hang out in Thailand or Bali.
I also had relatives working for a non-profit So I used the "Visiting relatives" bit. It might also be possible to do volunteer or paid work for an NGO or church and get temporary residence and there's a lot of NGO's and churches in Malaysia and especially Penang. Paid NGO work might not be much but if you have a pension or income it's supplemental income and something to do. Also, if you are on a tourist visa you can likely avoid local income tax issues.

We would like to retire to Malaysia from Canada. However, with the requirement of visa, Malaysia become the most expensive country to retired to. Overall cost , consider the investment loss due to deposit requirement, it is even more expensive than Canada. I am sure, for a couple with 20,000 per month pension and 500K sitting in the bank for investment. we can do a lot better in Canada with our free medical coverage.
