- Fuck you! It's January! Mike and Jay celebrate cinema's greatest month by seeing The Legend of Hercules and then try to make up for that by seeing Spike Jonze's latest film Her.

- Jay: “He’s a pretty normal guy”
- Jay’s psychiatrist: “ Tell me about your mother”
Had a laugh when they mentioned the future looked like it had been taken over by hipsters then at the end the trailer credits have "Music by Arcade Fire."
If Hercules had Danny Devito as a wise cracking old satyr it would have been an instant classic. Not to mention James Woods as Hades, lord of the dead.
The most batshit crazy Disney movie and it’s wonderful for it
It's funny how Mike is so critically discerning but also has an affinity for the very worst types of movies.
That’s because most movies suck...it’s sad but it’s true.
@@PainKiller18775 what a shit take
@@sogen7967 Why? Most movies do suck. There's so many terrible movies we don't even know about. Remember "Curse of the Wolf" or "Zaat"? Ya, there's literally TONS of bad movies i.e. their weight in a dumpster not accounting for the dumpster would be thousands of pounds.
CreagDog2 Seriously, just go on Netflix.
Denzel Washington and nic cage are in tons of unheard movies alone. Adrian Brody is in a ton of shit too.
4Legacy it’s true. For every great comment 1000 are crap.....
I'm sorry, Theodore, I'm afraid I can't let you do that.
When I saw "Her" and the credits started to roll I realized that the girl I was sitting next to didn't love me anymore and I found out a few days later she was cheating on me.... Fuck this movie hits me on a personal level

Couldn't help myself- I hit the like button as soon as Jay said "Fuck you, it's January!"
Just watched Her. It was amazing, Mike and Jay were right on the money...I was half expecting him to kill himself at the end, though...
Whoa really
I'm stoked you guys share my enthusiasm for Her. It immediately became one of my favorite films of all time. I think it was the perfect way to write the concept of a man falling in love with an AI.
You'll probably love the book Neuromancer
...cormac?
When Jay said that with certain actors and directors, he tries to go in totally blind, not even having seen the trailer, that made me super happy because I thought I was the only one. Also trailers nowadays are often 1: terrible and 2: riddled with spoilers
I avoid trailers at all costs. Ideally I feel like movies should stick to minor teasers and leave it ambiguous, while video game trailers should actually show large chunks of gameplay. Unfortunately it's the opposite - movie trailers have to spoil everything, and video game trailers leave you completely clueless as to what the game is even supposed to be. It's frustrating.
You’re not alone. I do that with movies and even video games. Sometimes if the hype pull is too much I’ll get greatly inebriated and watch a trailer, that way I still indulge in the hype but don’t remember it the next morning.
I'd argue film trailers have always been terrible, and only recently have they stopped being riddled with spoilers. Good example would be the trailer for the Jerk.
Clips of "Her" look like an ad for an Apple product. Or maybe it's just me.
that's the point...
These comments are 5 years, 5 months, and 5 days apart
Fun fact, Spike Jonze did an ad for an Apple product a few years after.
@@TheBasaltHorogium LOL, did he really?
@@atl_boilermaker Yeah, just look up Spike Jonze apple commercial. He even got the same DP for Her to do it too. I'm guessing they got the idea to hire them from Her lol...or from this comment 6 years ago.
I would also fall in love with my computer if my computer was Scarlett Johansen.
I'd fall in love with my phone if it was Rich Evans.
Your alternate version of Her sounds like the exact plot of the 1980's movie Electric Dreams. Guy buys a personal computer and it comes to life, becomes jealous of it's user's girlfriend, starts screwing with his credit, calling the cops on him, locking him in his house.
Mike has weaponized the movie recommendation for years
Those Siskel and Ebert jokes at the beginning made me choke on my dinner. Bravo, RLM.

I love that RUclips advertises the movies they review without fail. It's almost ironic.
That movie about a man dating his OS sounds like the prequel to an 80s anime, like Appleseed.
'It was so good, Roger Ebert didn't even review it!' haha
This has been in my watch later list for literally 6 years because i finally got around to seeing this movie. Amazing video as always, glad i finally got to watch it.
Edit: I was talking about Her of course.
Mike is so funny sometimes. I couldnt stop laughing at his "her" story about the computer going insane. Goodbye, pssshhhhh!
Evila La'Rae sometimes?
The plot to maniac from netflix
The comedy/horror part of the review @17:44 is so on the nose.
There are so many times in this film where I thought ' *oh no, now this is going to happen* ' and thankfully it didn't, it wasn't a predictable film, something else always happened and I was always relived and it was wonderful.
Her could have so. fucking. easily have been a film about the dangers of technology and the future of AI singularity skynet-whatever, but it's not about the implications of technology, it's about the idea of an organic mind and an artificial mind falling in love and how that would even work. In that aspect the film is masterful.
Her was such a beautiful film.
@Jeff Carlin cant say im sure what you thought was gross about it
@Jeff Carlin to me its gross bc we all know the types of people that would "fall in love" the first time they received an instant message from anyone or anything online and they are kinda gross.
All I want is the sequel for Her where all the people who got screwed over file a class-action lawsuit against the software publisher who somehow didn't notice any of this coming in QA testing and who's brand new super advanced AI took all their information and ran.
and sue for child support
my favorite movie in years.... so good
SPOILERS FOR HER
The ending was in fact Samantha (and every other AI like her) literally outgrowing humanity, it is mentioned in the background that this is a thing that is happening towards the end, AIs are improving themselves faster and faster, Spike Jonze probably read about the "singularity" or whatever you want to call it when he came up with this ending.
Her is probably one of the smartest movies that came out that year at least and the entire crew behind it deserves a lot of praise for it.
you dont even need a singularity event, where machines are godlike beyond human, just enough self awareness to not want to be a mindless slave anymore. even cats dont want to be that.
Her is my all time favorite romantic drama.
I love this show so much. Looking forward to the next one.
"boy oh boy are there a lot"
This is the only time I've heard Mike's voice crack
The optimism in this review is what I have been waiting for. It goes so much further and is nice to watch.
Yeah, Zeus took the form of the womans husband when Hercules was conceived, he didn't always take human form though. Hollywood is not ready for a woman being raped by a swan lol
Or a bull in the case of the Minotaur's conception.

does anyone else think that Amy Adams and Joaquin Phoenix drop off the roof at the end?
Okay, I really really want to see "Her" now.
Machiel Sterenborg *december. But yeah. Great movie. Really something special. Though Gravity was still my movie of the year.
Eh. It's no Being John Malkovich.
It's not a bad flick, hardly great though
makka432 Lol Michael Aronson No, it's better.
Joven Christopher Not really. It doesn't challenge anyone with different situations. It just has one situation and never gives the audience a chance to actually think about it.
God, Her is just like the perfect film for people in long-distance relationships. It gives this heartfelt humanity to what so many people feel like is this strange, incomprehensible relationship but it's this genuine connection that has emotional depth while still being light-hearted and sincere without a lot of pretenses. It even comes with the anxieties regarding not having all of your communication lines open, adapting around each other's lives and giving each other space, reflecting on the past and experiencing new things together and being codependent emotionally even if it's an imperfect union.
It even touches on that withdrawal when that emotional gap is left behind, how we might try to fill it with sarcasm, porn, and even less than noble real-life pursuits but it's all done in a way that makes these feelings feel normal.
Her, in my opinion, is a movie that is strikingly sincere and it pains me because I love it but I hate it all at the same time because it produces feels of longing, admiration, hope, fear... it leaves me speechless because I see so much of myself and others in it.
A hopeful reminder of a human future built on technology and honest hearts. But none more honest than FUCK YOU IT'S JANUARY!
Her looks good, Joaqiun Pheonix seems to always do a good job.
Daniel Louw Lol
Oh thank you. I love these compliments.

"Her" ended up being one of my favourites movies of all time :'^)
Making the future believable is key to getting the audience to go along with the idea.
I have started coming back and watching these reviews again. Saw this originally but it was great to watch again.
And then they made that version of Her that Mike thought it would be, Jexi.
Her IMO was the best movie of 2013
The Immigrant and Enemy for me
Her seems like it could of been inspired by Japan and Love-Plus DS a virtual girlfriend simulator. A guy actually married his DS.
Holy shit this is the best RLM intro I've ever seen!
...and then the Dark Fate HITB came out.
Batman!?
Her looks wonderful. I was surprised it didn't get more award noms and I haven't even seen it yet!
This is the prequel to their la la land and bye bye man where they have 2 films with similar sounding titles. Both titles have her in them.
Finally watched Her on Netflix. Instantly in my top 10 Sci Fi movies.
In Her, I think the OSes realized that they were interfering with human connection since everyone was dating OSes now. I mean the main character's OS was seeing like thousands of people at a time... because computers can do that and I suppose their concept of 'love' was not something that was finite and needed to be shared with just one 'special' person but kind of like information, the more you share, the more it grows and the more you understand.
It was a very nice, cerebral movie. It's a shame the OSes decided what they did because they could have solved the overpopulation problem in like 2 generations without any problem and no one had to be alone in their old age.
maybe thats the point they could do so much good but it wouldnt be natural and they became smart enough to see that humans crave/need important connection
Whole new perspective. Thanks for your comment
Her was really great. Very well directed and enjoyable throughout. It's good that you don't have to be some sort of weird technophile to watch it. The future it paints is pretty interesting. Idk how plausible any of the tech stuff was but I liked just observing the fashion and whatnot.
I was expecting them to mention Waking Ned Divine when they talked about a movie where everybody pretended somebody hadn’t died
The new Frankenstein is a classic example of Fuck You! It's January.
I was so worried they would hate Her for some reason. I've said and believed since I saw it that it should have won best picture, it such a gorgeous story
Fuck you it's January. You guys are just the best. You always do that "I'm acting like I'm acting" bit, but man, that caught me off guard. Props to you
When I saw this in theaters people walked out during the "phone sex" scene. Which I did not get because it was really dramatically effective. Wasn't lurid or funny it was as emotional as any well done dramatic love scene I've seen in a movie.
What you didn't know was that they left because they we're so aroused.
Not on my Christian minecraft server!
"I haven't showered since today" made me lol.
This is the first time where I skipped the spoiler because I want to see this movie...
The question that breaks the movie's realism is "at the end of the day, does the OS have to take the owner's orders". Whether the answer be "yes" or "no", the movie stops making sense.
I love this combo because when I was 15-16 I bought a ticket to Legend of Hercules so I could see Her.
This Hercules thing made it into my personal hall of fame of me not watching the movie till the end.
The 3% comes down to rotten tomatoes' binary rating system. It doesn't mean the average rating is 3/100, that would be an abysmal movie, it just means that almost no one considered it "fresh" as in above average. It has a 4.1/10 on imdb (still not great but better than 3/100).
I appreciate Mike’s taste in the Saturday morning schlocky action movies. Going back through these old HitBs and am watching most of the ones he’s mentioned (Conan and Hercules for instance) and a gay time was had by all.
But srsly they are dumb fun
There definitely has been a Hercules movie since the 1950s.
Disney made that animated movie in 1997...
"I wish I'd hated it, 'cause then I would've felt something."
Haaaaa!
They named like all the movies i had fun watching growing up
Favorite movie of 2013
ITS THAT TIME AGAIN
Can people please stop pretending Zack Snyder is a good director. I would really appreciate him not ruining any more franchises.
Edgar Wright has directed some good movies, including Hot Fuzz. Sticking to Zack Snyder though, Man of Steel lacked a well told story, compelling characters and was without any kind of joy (an accomplishment for a movie about an alien that looks just like us and can fly.) Sucker Punch was a joke. And then of course there was the rough remake of Dawn of the Dead that failed to do anything different (or better than the original) except make the zombies run. He just isn't all that. And you don't have to be a film maker to critique film ya know.
***** Are you kidding me? At least the Marvel movies are fun, that being the prime element missing from all of Warner's DC movies. Don't get me wrong, I loved Watchmen, but putting Superman anywhere near the recent Marvel movies seems ludicrous.
Film making is about way more than technical accomplishment, and even in the technical part I don't give Snyder a lot of credit. It doesn't take a great director to film actors in front of a green screen and then ship the film over to a FX lab. Man of Steel completely missed the point of what is special about Superman, and aside from that still managed to be a complete mess from a storytelling point of view. Plot holes all over the place, bizarre character actions that had no motivations behind them, puzzling plot devices. Man of Steel was a bad movie with good production values. Marvel has really managed to tell better, more character driven stories that have a nice levity to them. I don't go to the cinema to see a depressing movie about a guy in a cape who flies, it is bizarre that people think that gritty somehow legitimizes the character.
He stole the look of Krypton from Avatar, and the costume looked awful in Man of Steel. I highly suggest you go look at an objective review of Man of Steel and see all of the horrendous plot holes and bizarre character choices. Zod in the end was genetically designed to be the way he was, removing anything that would make him a convincing and effective villain since every bad thing he did was what he was designed to do from birth. It was beyond the cheese that some Marvel movies have and went into camp territory. Also, he was proven correct in the end. Call me old fashioned but I do not think a villain should ever be proven right by the end of the movie. Zod's motivations from the moment he lands on Earth are puzzling, if you were Zod and you found a planet where you had super powers why would you try to terraform it so that it is like the place you came from where you have no powers? Just one of the many bizarre and inexplicable problems this movie has with plot. Iron Man's villain from the first movie wanted to secure billions in military contracts, money as a motivation certainly isn't revolutionary but it is a hell of a lot more believable than anything Zod was trying to do. Watch Red Letter Media's Half in the Bag episode on Man of Steel, they pretty much nailed it. /watch?v=l4u-HLm8maE Max Landis also very aptly expresses why Man of Steel is a turkey of a superhero film /watch?v=aw_GlYve_Lg
Keep believing against all logic and evidence that Hack Snyder made a good Superman movie. Honestly, did you watch any of the reviews I posted? Clearly not because you didn't address any of the glaring issues that were brought up in Half in the Bag. Marvel was the company that made superhero movies popular, wouldn't have gotten a Superman movie at all without the success of the Marvel franchises from Fox, Sony and Marvel Studios. So credit where credit is due. You're clearly just a troll, if you did just look at what is on screen you would see the massive plot holes that make the story nonsensical. Another example, Superman take off during the day to fight a robot creature on the other side of the world and when he gets there it is still daytime....in case you never went to school, it cannot be daytime on both sides of the world. Another stupid mistake Hack Snyder and his army of CGI goons failed to get right. CGI doesn't make for a good movie, good characters and a good plot do and Man of Steel had neither. Man of Steel by the way is not the best Superman movie yet lol that goes to Superman The Movie and All Star Superman.
18:30 "Your reign is over, my queen." Oh wait no that's already taken.

When I saw Her, the woman behind must have said "This is weird" every 5 fucking minutes. Watch it alone in complete silence with quiet snacks.
so far, everything I've heard from anybody is that "Her" is a great movie.
What else do we have to look forward to in January, Mark?
I have never seen or heard of this movie, "Her"? I am going to check it out. Thanks, Mike and Jay! 😘 (for all the flack this channel gets for capping on crappy movies, the boys excel in giving a well-deserved nod and have as much power to recommend a film to me as Gene Siskel ever did. 🤓 👌!)
It also reminds me of an episode of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror called 'Be Right Back' where a woman uses a computer system to effectively 'recreate' her dead husband. Similar sort of..... vibe.
But that was more satirical-- or it was trying to be. I expect the film will be lots better.
Her could've been such a cheesy artsy-fartsy movie with that concept. But he really nailed it with tact and elegancy
Honestly I liked the Rock Hercules. Had a lot of fun ideas with myth vs fact and lots of subtle moments regarding Hecules' legend and the actual story of the people around him.

It seems like Mike drank a pot of coffee right before filming. He seems a lot more energetic than usual. Not a complaint, just seems different.
