    Forty years after the death of dictator Francisco Franco, Spain is still unable to fully move on from its past. The population remains deeply divided between pro and anti-Franco camps. Our reporters went to Madrid to meet those still affected by the memory of El Caudillo.
    For many Spaniards, it’s a taboo subject. Some families contain both anti-Franco Republicans and pro-Franco Nationalists, many holding painful secrets from the past. Generations of men and women who grew up after Franco’s rule have sometimes learned during a family gathering that a relative disappeared or was tortured, executed or kidnapped during the civil war (1936-1939) or the dictatorship of General Franco (1939-1975). Atrocities were committed by both sides.
    According to the UN, Spain is the country that has experienced the second-largest number of forced disappearances worldwide, after Cambodia. Over 150,000 people went missing during the dark years, according to official figures. Tens of thousands more were tortured and thousands of children stolen from their mothers, who were often communist or left-wing, to be entrusted to "good Catholic families."
    Today, more and more Spaniards are seeking justice and compensation. Many want to see their torturers, aged themselves, go to trial. The descendants of those who disappeared also want to know the truth about their ancestors and their fate. In addition to discovering the final resting place of their loved ones, they want to understand more about their own family history. But their appeals often go unanswered; their cases dismissed. For victims and their families, the need for recognition is immense and the fight rife with difficulties.

    Any comments on the Republican Government and their Soviet support? Russia sent tanks, planes, artillery and light weaponry. Most importantly sent Soviet military advisors and political cadre. In return they were allowed to "borrow" all of Spain's gold reserve. The shipments didn't even reach Russia intact having be pilfered enroute. Spain has never seen that gold againi.

    • @Jim-Tuner
      @Jim-Tuner 5 лет назад +13

      Its even worse than that. The gold was sent off in secret weeks after the civil war broke out and with no specific promise from the Soviets of anything in exchange for it. When aid was eventually given by the Soviets, it was always given in exchange for political concessions that increased the power of the communist party in the government of the republic and inevitably most of the soviet aid ended up in the hands of army units dominated by the community party.
      If the republic was a real government whose priority was winning the war, they would have beaten the nationalists. At the start, they had the money, the industry and the population (numbers) to win. But their first action in the conflict was to sent the wealth of the country (and the republic) off to Russia where it was never seen again. Rather than build an army, they let the political parties create private armies. Rather than build a war industry, they led a revolutionary effort to destroy business in the areas they controlled.

      Well if the governments of France and Britain and the other western democracies had allowed the democratic government of the Spanish Republic to buy weapons to defend its self from a military coup , then the Spanish government would not have had to go to the Soviet Union to buy arms, whether you liked the Spanish government or not under international law it should have been able to buy weapons , but the ruling class of the so called western democracies were in sympathy with Fascism , they prefered a miltary dictatorship rather than a democratic Leftwing Republican government in Spain.

      @@blackbird7048 The mainstream media are not historians. Therefore, who gave them the right to dictate or use their morally high ground positions to attempt to re-write history or present one-sided, blatant depictions or distortions of history as if it so obvious or clear to Spaniards living in the 1930s which political system was best for them. The Spanish Civil War, like much of Spanish history, is complex, multi-faceted, multi-dimensional and in some respects, contradictory and reactionary. I kind of compare the Spanish Civil War to 17th century English Civil War between Charles I Royalists and Cromwells Parliamentarians. Both sides in the conflict had men and factions that were fighting for distinctly different views of English government, society, religion, and identity. There were the Levellers faction, Cromwells moderate Parliamentarians who wanted essentially a constitutional monarchy form of govrrnment(which is what essentially what occurred anyway in the long term) and you had Royalists who believed Charles I should rule like an enlightened despot in the form of French Bourbon dynasty of absolute rule Louis XIV epitomized. It was a very similar series of circumstances with Spanish Civil War except there were more countries involved, far more deaths, and a far more brutal, longer-lasting dictatorship that emerged following the war.

      Hi Iwhish... the thing is that the general Franco did a coup d'état against the democratic regime. Because the democratic regimen hadn't enough troops and army to beat Franco asked help from the only country that wanted to, Rusia. Thought Spain had to pay that "help" with gold. The rest of Europe thought that it is OK if falangist and communist kill each other in Spain's internal affair. But Franco had the help from Mussolini and Hitler's modern army and weapons. Those modern weapons that Hitler could the test in Spain where used later against Europeans and Americans in IIWR. So no, definitely no, it will be best if from the beginning that the rest of European countries help Spain against the falangist coup d'état.

      Fil the coup was not a falangist take over.The Right Wing was made up of mostly conservatives and reactionaries, which could contain the falagist elements from taking the coalition over.The Left alliance known as the Popular front was a coalition of Spanish Republicans, socialist, communist, and the CNT. The Republicans could not contain the members of the far left (CNT, Communists, etc.) as they were egged on by Soviet military advisors to try and take control of the popular front. Franco united the right to prevent this from happening. After Franco took power he would act out against the falangist who stepped out line.

    But seriously, even though I'm not a fascist how would the republic be any better than Franco? The republic would of eventually become communist and communism in Spain was a disease. It hated Christianity and the monarchy which were very big parts of Spanish culture and life, and communism was completely new in Spain and had no place in it. Most historians agree that the Spanish civil war was a fight between fascism and communism, and fascism is much better than communism.

      The Republic was instated by some reasons in the first place. Among others, because the people was tired of those big latifundists who kept rural people poor and urban people being constantly deceived by previously pacted electoral fraud. If you support Franco's dictatorship you are a Francoist. Period. And even if the republic was chaotic, at least it was democratic and had a multi-party system.

    • @Jim-Tuner
      @Jim-Tuner 5 лет назад +4

      The republic lost the war because it wasn't even a republic. It was a confederation of gangs each with their own private army and each intending to massacre all the others at the conclusion of the civil war. Their priority was never to win. Within weeks of the rebellion breaking out in 1936, they shipped 510 tons of the country's gold reserves (75%) in secret from the central bank in Madrid to Moscow. They couldn't build a national army, they couldn't run an economy and they couldn't maintain law or order within the territory they controlled. And at the end, the leaders simply abandoned the country and their followers. They got away to safety while those who trusted them were simply abandoned to Franco.
      The big talkers like La Pasionaria were, when it came to it, not willing to even fight to the end. Their lives were simply too important to be lost fighting in Spain.

    Even taking his autocratic rule into consideration, there's no arguing that Francoist Spain was at least FUNCTIONAL, with an economy and social structure mirroring many Western-European countries. The reason Franco never had to resort to the extremities of totalitarian rule is because he never did much to upset the balance of society. For this reason he remains a dangerous example of how fascism can form a workable society, and so in the decades following his death the left have feverishly sought to overstate his repressive actions.
    If the communists had won, not only would Spanish heritage be destroyed, but Spain would have been impoverished, and used by the Soviets as an extension of their influence. Never forget that the left present you with Francoism as an alternative to free democracy, but their ACTIONS at the time were not in this direction. George Orwell based his novel "1984" on the disillusionment he felt with the Spanish socialists, after fighting alongside them. THAT was their nature. They were not victims of Franco, they were creatures far worse than he.

The Spanish civil war inspiration was derived from the COMMUNIST (not socialist) faction loyal to Stalin in the war. This faction would later turn on the communists who were opposed to Stalin as well as anarchists and socialists alike.

    For sure there is no heaven on this earth and for sure people do make mistakes. It is also not so easy to do everything clearly by the tiny road of law when you have to deal with the communists (terrorists) and the people are under their influence. If the children persecuted mention are true the questions are coming who they are, how old were at that time, what was the final result after the arrest, were other measures taken, for the instance towards elder people were trying to use children for the instance, and so on. Apart from that overall often of time accusing the children probably doesn't seem a right thing. Apart from that thing mention and some possible mistakes and from what I know I would say Francisco Franco saved the Kingdom of Spain from the worst thing could happen to his homeland at that time. Saying being a Russian. Trust me, you just research what the communists and their successors have done to my country and still doing(KGB does still exist with it's head Putin were bombing Russian houses in 1999 to put his rating up the ladder to make him elected and many-many-many other crimes). RF is successor of USSSR which is criminal terrorist organisation so as the CHK - KGB occupied most part of the Russian Empire which are in charge of many brutal crimes as well as brainwashing the people as well as the many crimes across the world and some which I would call quite many until today. Most of the "RF" diplomats are KGBsts or people are under their influence.

    its funny how most western countries like to see the right as bad but the left as ok yet the communist s in spain were torturing people and murdering,and if they had won they would have invaded portugal and britain and france might have got involved,franco was the best of a bad bunch its because he won is the reason he gets criticised
