- The knowledge and technology that is needed for making a tyre for on-road performance and off-road purposes can be far removed from each other as making a running shoe and a pair of wellingtons.
As 4x4s become a popular choice of vehicle on the roads today, 4x4 tyres have to strike a balance in both fields. To find out which of 2019’s 4x4 tyres does it best, we have assembled seven competitors from Bridgestone, Dunlop, Falken, Goodyear, Hankook, Maxxis, and Nexen to find out.
Find out how each tyre performs in greater detail and who takes the title at www.whichcar.com.au/article-s...

No BFG, NItto, Coopers, Toyo, Mickey T's? Ya missed some of most popular brands in Oz...
Best 4x4 tyre without all the competitors ? Logic of this channel
Yep garbage test.....these guys are so out of touch....
What a crap test, These guys are wankers,
How about Yokohama Geolandars, along with Nitto and Toyo another very good allrounder AT tire.
It's been 2 months and still no reply to this comment.
Come on guys, can you explain to us why you left off the main tyres everyone uses?
I know you won't want to reply to silly comments on here, but can you at least reply to the main question which is why were these other brands not included.
Please tell me it has nothing to do with who paid to be on featured on this video and who did not.
Regards Ben
You blokes are so out of touch with this selection, it will make me doubt your recommendations generally.
I was able to get a great deal on the Hankooks dynapros. Fantastic tyre so far after 10000kms, with low road noise and decent enough off road capabilities I'm stoked. Awesome vid team!
The 697 LT - we use them in the Pilbara and will shred a set in 20000km which takes 4 - 5 weeks being run 24/7. We’ve tried a lot of brands and out here these things have proved insanely strong.
Glad to hear it - I just bought a set.
I agree with Dan R. Coopers and BF Goodrich are the ones I thought would be considered.
I have the Falken and Bridgestone D697 and the Bridgestone are worse then BFGs in the wet. Like driving on ice, the Falkens are fantastic and bag well at low psi, I would place them at the top when consider how well the perform after 50,000km
We'll even do so off roading. Gee thanks would not have guessed you might go off road with the 4x4 tires.
I am always a bit sceptic when the price has influence on the overall rating of a tire. Damage to the vehicle is almost every time more expensive than the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive set of tires.
There are other factors too, it desn't help it a tire costs half of another if you have to replace it twice as often, or if it can't hold up to it's weight, or speed rating ect. Or if looses its performance. I had cheap (road) tires once, and in the first summer, they were as good as more expensive ones, in the second summer they got unbearably loud and scary in wet conditions. So i had to replace them way earlier than any other tires i had.
What an abysmal comparison. Are these just the companies that paid you to compare their tyres. An absolute waste of anyone's time that takes their 4x4 offroad...
Hello, thank you for your great contributions, you are very professional, it is very helpful. I have a very important question, I drive the new Hyundai Tucson built in 2021 all-wheel drive. Which tire would you recommend for the hot summer with dimensions 235/55/18. I drive a lot on the road on asphalt when it's very hot. michelin crossClimate 2 - 235 55 18 or Bridgestone Dueler All Terrain
AT002 - 235/55 R18. Thank you. Best regards
The best of the worst, right?
I stopped watching after you announced the tyres you're testing.
Hi this an excellent review, very objective and informative. I want to know have you tested Maxxis S Pro tyres? Will it be a more rugged onroad tyres for my 235/55 R17 Audi Q3 Quattro?. Can Maxxis be trusted on cars with over 200km top speed?. Please help
You are joking right? This test leftnout the best All terrain tyres made.
Why should I joke? I am buy what is available here in India, it's very limited brands in my size. Only options are Goodyear eagle rs-a, maxxis s pro, Kuhmo hp71 and Conti sport contact 5. What to choose?
I like grandtrek's sidewall, it makes the tires look thicker and wider
BFG are the go to tyre for all UK landrover lovers but I want to know if there are any better tyres now. I have heard that Maxxis tyres need alot of wheel balancing due to issues with manufacture so ai will be avoiding them.
The world has moved on from BFGs now. Maxxis anecdotally perform much better, particularly in the wet.
Good test! I would love to see this same test with the LT all terrains, the tougher ones like Cooper, BFG, Mickey Ts, Goodyear wranglers etc. Cheers Steve
Only one LT tyre? You're supposed to be a 4wd magazine
The most pointless test ever, none of the AT brands that most serious 4x4 users use
I think you've been wasting your money. Clearly these cheap tires do the job. If I was to pop a tire on a rock I'd much prefer if it was a cheap tire.
I’d love to see a test of some of the cheap brands like Winrun and mister, find out some real stats of how they stack up.
Cooper and yokohama all terrain tyres you missed. They are the best i have them on my jeep and land cruiser.
I always try to be constructive with my reviews, however found it hard with this one. The criteria of the tyre wasn’t set out and most reviewers class by road, hybrid and off road along with durability, grip and cost. Also, no BFG and those liked by the 4x4 clubs. You could have made this three parts with taking into account how customers use their tyres.
If I heard correctly, the off-road part of the testing accounted for only 5% of the scores! The off-road section seemed pretty lame.
2019 best highways tyres
Should have thrown the new Cooper AT3 XLT's in there, would have cleaned the field up!
1 day test*..... average brands. No real numbers. Results meaningless.
Bridgestone vs Falken if I’m touring. Mostly gravel, bush, beach and a farm paddock in NZ.
697's are great. I dont do mud (I cant find any) so perfect for my needs
not the Falken 15k on them and i am changing them , there stuffed feathering , multiple wheel alignments cant stop it .
Please can you do new vlog maxxis 980 bfg nitto mickey thompson?
Bridgestone best here as it's light truck AT's stronger sidewalls and puncture strength. On road not the best.
you forgot to do a snow test so I had to switch off,
You don't even say which model Grandtreks you're testing. They come in a few variations.
so only one of each type ? how is that a comparison !
No Michelin?
Who paid for this infomercial?
Good review. Help me choosing which one...
Why don’t you guys compare tyres people actually buy and put on their trucks...
I don’t even have to watch this to know which one is best. Bridgestone is above and beyond the B class tyres!
for on road vehicles yes. 4x4 vehicles no. their usually behind the dedicated 4x4 tyre brands.
wax333 theyre*
Falken wildpeak is a light truck construction
I know so is hankook
How the fuck do you consider the dunlop grandtrek in a best tyre over coopers sttpro or st/maxx
Ive done 500k in the grandtrek and will be getting new tyres as soon as possible
WTF??? Battle of the crap end of the market. Wouldn't have any of these.
me got maxxis tyres on me mountain bike
what a poor sample - you guys have lost big credibility on this one by excluding serious brands most people fit. Pick your act up!!!
My friend has a 2018 nissan np300 navara 4x4 pikup truck
Wonder who paid the most. Garage test
how did you video under a vehicle lol
No sand test!
How did maxxis win
Most of these are Mall Terrain tires...
My holden captiva has more capable tread than these slicks....
Ive had the latest hybrid nitto ridgegrapplers the last 6mnths and for 300ea it whips the ko2 and atzp3 n 3xmore aggressive with a super quiet highway drive
From now on anything you guys post from 4x4 I'm skipping, just bullshit.
Absolute rubbish....Australia’s best 4x4 tyre! Where were they? Clearly marketing to the absolute complete novice.
What a waste of time. Needs to be called an On Road "4X4" tire test. A proper 4x4 tire needs to be of Light Truck construction. You'd be game to take any of these tires into remote or harsh conditions.
No BFG ats WTF you really need to get with the program ,
Complete waste of time....utterly meaningless. Seriously, why do you guys even bother anymore?
I wouldn't run any of that garbage on my ute...
aint no lt ....
That was just an excuse to go for a burn. So many variables not taken into account. Where's the data? Was hoping for something a little more scientific....not to mention you missed some of the most popular brands.
What no BFG, NOT A TRUE TEST OF POPULAR TIRES, Maybe Your bias, doesn’t BFG advertise with you ???
What about road noise. No one gives a shit if you can drive faster corners in a dual cab ute. Try again please
Yawn
No information here, none at all
What a rubbish test, clearly lacking in range of tyres. Big thumbs down. Listen to your viewers
Just instadislike this one. Make good content or don't even try.
Cooper is better than all of those.
Cooper are over hyped,over priced!
Poor presentation.
What a sad review. Where do you guys get your funding from? It can’t be from those who make tyres a huge percentage of 4wders buy. And, a day review? That’s not a review. Just an observation.
This is laughable. All about sponsor $$$ yet again. They forgot to include the Yangpangyongying tyre from China. 😂
You guys left out all the other big brands that people buy and provided no figures to back your testing. You can measure how long it takes a certain car with a certain tyre to stop is dry or wet but no numbers were provided. I have just wasted 5 minutes watching this video. Useless.
I came here to see BFGs.. ha.. useless
I think you guys are in bed with these manufacturers. This review is useless and makes me think you guys are out of touch will think twice now about your reviews on anything 👎🏻
paid commercial
Gay as testing.....
Waste of time….non of the most popular brands….
Just lost all credibility with me.....clearly these tyres were not selected by anyone serious in 4x4 off-roading......perhaps this should be the urban shopping centre tyre selection for wannabe 4WD people.......haha come on.......seriously!!!
No Yokohama.
What a pointless milk toast lot of tires and test. 4x4 tires my ass.....
