  • How do all-terrain tyres and mud terrain tyres compare driving on sand dunes?
    Together with Performance Driving Australia we put them both to the test to find out.
    We got two Toyota Hiluxes, one with a set of all-terrain tyres and one with a set of mud terrain tyres, both set to 16psi, with the same driver. Both tyres had the same height & width.
    Ps: does anyone know the plural of Hilux?

    Jared Mendham: Welcome back to Tyre View. And today, we're looking at the difference between all-terrain tyres and mud-terrain tyres on the sand. And we've actually, luckily, got two exactly the same Hilux's running exactly the same height and width tyres. The only difference is that one has mud-terrains and the other one has all-terrains. So, we're just going to go for a little bit of a drive and actually subjectively tell you how different we feel about the tyres. And while we go for that drive I've actually got David here from Performance Driving Australia who's going to just give us a little bit of an idea as to why these tyres might be a bit different. So, let's go for a drive.
    Jared Mendham: So, now we're in the car with the all-terrain tyres. We're just going to go for a little drive.
    Jared Mendham: What sort of differences should I be feeling with this?
    David Waldon: We feel that the car feels up on the surface pretty easily, pretty quickly. Especially in this still quite thick sand-
    Jared Mendham: Yeah.
    David Waldon: And it's been cut up a little bit by-
    Jared Mendham: Somebody's been driving around here.
    David Waldon: [crosstalk 00:01:17]. And you'll find that the car, even though it pushes a little bit in this soft stuff, still will turn without you having to fight it too much.
    Jared Mendham: Yeah.
    David Waldon: As you dig into trenches, you find the sand pushes against the side wall, and makes the steering a little bit heavy, but you just push past that and use a little bit of throttle as well.
    Jared Mendham: And it's certainly not hard to drive around.
    David Waldon: No. At these pressures it should be pretty easy provided you get momentum.
    Jared Mendham: Yup. But even coming to a stop. And we're in some pretty soft sand here that hasn't been tracked recently. And I'm going to floor it.
    David Waldon: And see, it lifts up pretty easily, pretty quickly.
    Jared Mendham: That's right. Whoa! It's a bit dense there.
    David Waldon: [inaudible 00:02:04]. Yes.
    Jared Mendham: So, should we go out and try the M/T's?
    David Waldon: Let's do that.
    Jared Mendham: We'll just drive up.
    Jared Mendham: So, we're now in the car with the mud-terrain tyres, M/T. We're going to start the car. We're going to go in power mode, same as we did before.
    David Waldon: Exactly the same as we had it before.
    Jared Mendham: That's right. We're in drive. So, we're going to get going.
    Jared Mendham: And even straight away I can notice it's not... It's not driving as easily. So what should I be seeing in this one?
    David Waldon: I think you'll find there's a little bit more hesitant to turn.
    Jared Mendham: Whoa.
    David Waldon: So you turn into here, you'll find.
    Jared Mendham: Yeah, it feels like I'm on a... Actually...
    David Waldon: You got to use more steering angle and more throttle to get it to turn.
    Jared Mendham: Yeah, it feels like I'm actually sort of drifting it more.
    David Waldon: Yeah.
    Jared Mendham: So that's-
    David Waldon: Then it gets a bit hard to know where your wheel is like that.
    Jared Mendham: Yeah.
    David Waldon: Where you're steering. So you're going to have a little bit more concentration on it. It doesn't quite sit up. Do you feel it bogged down a little bit more?
    Jared Mendham: Yup.
    David Waldon: You can see what happens when you come to a stop.
    Jared Mendham: Yup. So we'll stop here.
    David Waldon: There's [inaudible 00:03:18] here.
    Jared Mendham: Again.
    David Waldon: Make sure your wheels straight ahead and-
    Jared Mendham: Wheels straight.
    David Waldon: Yup.
    Jared Mendham: We're going to go foot flat to the board like before.
    David Waldon: Let's do that.
    Jared Mendham: Okay, ready?
    David Waldon: Yup. I already felt it sink down-
    Jared Mendham: Yup, that's right.
    David Waldon: On the first movement it went down verses forward.
    Jared Mendham: Exactly.
    David Waldon: And we're going to have a bumpy bit again. Shake up lunch.
    Jared Mendham: Yes. [inaudible 00:03:39]. So it's just not as pleasurable a ride.
    David Waldon: No. It still works.
    Jared Mendham: I mean, that's right. Still, we'll get there.
    David Waldon: And if you're cautious about your line and keep your momentum up, it will work fine. Just not as comfortable, is it?
    Jared Mendham: No. And it also, I feel like it actually comes to a stop a lot quicker as well.

    MTs typically have better sidewall lugs and thicker sidewalls(higher tire ply rating) and can be used at lower pressures giving you a much bigger footprint to the ground lessening the pounds per square inch of vehicle weight to ground and larger traction surface. Something to consider!!

      Certainly is! What I'd like to do is a side-by-side comparison again, and use both vehicles at lower pressures to see how they handle, and also see if we can pull a tyre off a rim at those pressures, and see where that goes 🤘

    I have the GO15's A/T on my 2018 outback and Iove them. Take it on long island beaches all the time and it handles great. Also very little if any additional road noise on the highway.

    It's a rather elegant thing: Surface area. The A/T presents more surface area, and thus displaces more mass on a low structural rigidity surface. This reduces the focused pressure to multiply the mass of sand granules acting on the tire in the vector of rotation. The mud terrains have higher contact pressure, and their fluid dynamics actually propel a lot of material axial to the tire's rotation. There is a sizable reduction in the amount of force generated the direction the tire is spinning, and due to the ejection of material and reduced displacement, the tire has a lower keel depth. This also increases rolling resistance. The faster the tire spins, the more material is ejected, aka digging a hole. Even A/T tires will do the same, just to a lesser degree. Technically, the best tire tread for sand would be a tread that would allow tire flexibility, with closed shoulders.

      That's quite the legendary explanation mate, well done! Another consideration is the flexibility of the carcass, which further contributes to the contact patch and how the tyre conforms to the sand. ATs generally have less sidewall plies, so a softer carcass, so bigger contact patch for the same air pressure, plus that conformity thing too 🤘

    Thanks for the comparison and logical conclusions. I finally got my answer for comparing characteristics between AT & MT tires: ATs float more, MTs dig more, with AT having the advantage on the pavement.
    As mentioned in the comments, when running MTs in soft sand, you will be safe with pressure at 10-12 psi (just don't turn abruptly).

      @@M0N33R because the Firestone MT2 tread compound is so soft, they're better on pavement than any AT, and because the sidewalls are 3-ply, you can make abrupt turns without worry. It's the perfect tire if you don't mind the high cost and having to replace them every 10K miles. They're even quiet on road if you rotate them very often.

    Maybe a bit late but. Ive had the ats on my car for the last 200k ks and they have been great. I went to get a replacement set and was told they were crap nw because they've been changed. Is this right?

    nice test, i’ve similar results in the sand. i tested the bfg ko, ko2, toyo mt, goodyear mtr. all 35” on the same truck. all terrains performed much better in the sand. you can’t get the same flex with the mt and u risk knocking the tire off the bead if u go to low on air pressure. mt tires spin too much and just fling sand instead of pushing u forward. it would be nice if u guys tested the tires trying to climb a big sand dune. maybe next test.

    Ultimately tyre pressure is the key no matter what tyre you have but the slicker/less aggressive tyre is better on sand. It's Science...

    Did anyone catch what size tyres they were I think they were 265/70/R17? I see they removed the mud flap from the front wheel arch I have the same hilux mine has 265/65/R17 the tyre shop says a BFG Ko2 in 265/70/R17 will fit on stock suspension If I remove the mud flap but I don't want the tyre rubbing as they experienced with the mud tyre my tyres are 30.7 inches tall and these seem to be 31.9 inches tall Mike

      Hi mate, you're correct, both sets were 265/70 R17. We removed the mud flap, then still had to do a bit of cutting to get them to fit. The OD must be a little bigger on the MTs vs the ATs, as they still rubbed on suspension ramp for about the same amount of cutting. It'd be worth checking the actual OD of the K02's vs the Yoko ATs we had, as I have *heard* that BFG's run smaller. That was in 35" tyres though, so might be the same for the smaller tyres? Cheers!       Depending on wheel diameter and bead style and how hard your turning or hitting bumps..turn easy and brake easy and still stand on it..you will slip rims in the tire .as I have done this with 50 pounds of air in my tire in my 72 blazer on the street grabbing second gear..so your balance will be off when your back..might be amazed if you drive hard and mark your tire to rim timing. Short story longer?
      I was going to Glamis.
      I thought my rims might be spinning in the tires when I'm aired down..I marked my tires..Im aired up..3 hour drive to Glamis. Fully loaded partial caged blazer. Dirt bike, lazy boy chair, race gas and beer..went to the gas station to fill up the 32 gallon tank in my blazer. Got In to it with a another truck stood on it..barked tires into second gear, pulled into gas station. Looked at tires and wheels while pumping gas, filler neck In the middle...can pull up to any side of the pump..hmm.., looked down saw I already spun a rim in my tire before I even left town.

      If it's *just* for the specific task of climbing the rocky hill, the MT will be best each time. It's when you take into consideration all the other types of driving you'll be doing that the balance between MT and AT comes to the crunch.

      Probably depends on the vehicle, really. 28psi is pretty low, but might be okay on a Jimny, or perhaps a ute which doesn't carry stuff. I run 34 in the front, and 32 in the rear of my ute, which doesn't carry much. I guess it comes down to experimenting and what you're comfortable with 👍

    All being equal...the at wins...however, airing down the mt may make a greater impact. I live in se texas on the gulf coast and san luis pass has very deep fine dry sand and airing down does wonders for my 35x12.50r17 mts

    The MTs come most often in an E rating which is very stiff, maybe too stiff on lighter 4x4 vehicles as an E rating is really for a 3/4 ton pick up. The ATs can be had in P ratings which is much softer and works better in sand. We have used both P rated and C rated all terrains on our Jeeps at approx. 12 psi never get stuck and never rolled off a bear either.

    I had a set of those Yokohama a/t’s and was very surprised how well they worked in the snow with my stock Tacoma. I was able to push through a foot of snow up hill without having to even lock it in to 4x4

      The set I replaced those with were Mitchlen’s and they were a total disappointment.

      In my experience the first 2 winters the all terrains will be great then they will be terrible after.
      I had K02s that lost there softness so by the second winter I was sliding all over. Nothing beats a dedicated snow tire

    I spend alot of time in sand , bfg mt (aired down correctly)tyres will get you further than equivalent in Ats . Definitely!

      no way, same size tires, a/t will be better on all sand conditions, i too have many hours on the sand ,, and remember one rotation of a tire in sand mud tires will dig a hole, while the a/t will not nearly as much, maybe with a higher horsepower truck and a lot of wheel spin m/t’s might be better, but i doubt it.

      @@ken-ec9wv that's only if you're hitting the throttle too hard. Geared down and aired dowm to about 8psi on bead locks your MTs will definitwly do better than ATs

    Driving on a beach with extremely soft sand, I mean EXTREMELY, where you can dig yourself stuck with one good application of throttle, and you'll find that a tire with the LEAST amount of traction (even a slick) will get you around where you would otherwise get stuck. The only way you would want to take a real aggressive tire out into the stuff would be if you could spin the tire fast enough to float it on the sand, something with lots of power and instant rev capabilities. If you haven't been on sand that soft, don't try to go out without a high lift jack and a large piece of 2 X 12 board, it might very well keep you from a very expensive extraction charge. I've been to a Virginia beach with a Subaru Brat and BFG Mud Terrains (the old Rayon ones), saw a large diesel pickup and an old Chevy Blazer down to the axles and turned right back off the sand. The only thing I had going was extremely light weight. But there was no way it was EVER going to spin those tires fast enough not to dig myself in.

      Sooo my mom's suv is a GLE 43 AMG coupe. It has 275 front and 315 rear width tires. But they are 21 inch summer tires. Like they are legit pirelli p zeros. That's what they fit from the factory. It has around 380 hp. How do you think it would do on the sand?

    In Dubai, we are using tires with the least threads and thin side wall to float and never get stuck in soft desert sand, very easy to drive around big dunes once deflated (best: Michelin tire XLT a/s)
    But also we are using mud terrain tires if we would like to drift in sand, create a sand fountains or just playing around, it will require a high RPM driving and lots of wheel spin to get the job done which is way more fun to drive. Both tires works but each used for different applications and different way of driving.
    Mostly we are deflating the tires to 10-12 psi on the both types of the tires.

    I heard aggressive is NOT better. how much better are wider tires over sand?.. say about 12% wider.. 8.5" vs 9.5" wide... 215/55r16 vs 255/50r16?

      That's what we found in this test 👍 In terms of wider, you'd have to consider the balance between wider footprint, the declining advantage of going wider, and the power it takes to push that wider tread. If you deflate a tyre to 12psi, then you end up with a significantly wider footprint than if it's at road going pressure. Lots of things to think about, but it probably comes down to what's best on the road, that will also be okay on the sand, if that's where you'll be spending your time off road.

    It was a unfair competition the a/t is not as stiff so it has bagging naturally now take the m/t and run 15-20psi less than a a/t and you will see that the m/t does better all around

      It's interesting how much tyres of the same "size" do actually vary. For example I see it on the forums that the 35" equivalent BFG MT apparently runs smaller than some other MTs of the same size. There's probably a video in that...

      In that tyre size, it might be a little big, as you don't really get enough sidewall to get decent bag when you deflate. It's certainly not bad, but it more depends on the type of 4x4 you get into. If you do a lot of rocky stuff, more sidewall is good. If you do a lot of beach, more sidewall is good. If you deflate and go onto regular tracks, then it's not such a big thing.
      I usually run 33" sized tyres, and have both 18" and 17" and you definitely get a bit more compliance out of the tyres on 17's, but in that size it's not really that noticeable between the two, to the layman. That's a little bigger than 265/65 17, though.

    Where I live the M\T tires are a lot better over a range of surfaces, I have to drive 500 miles to get anywhere near sand dunes !

    You need side void to clear the sand dam away so you don't roll. Maybe just driving around you might like all terrains but getting on it and drifting it the muds are always the winner..yes you go down for a second and get land speed going then you get off and allow the tires to roll up on the top then get back on it again..but what would I know I have months of straight sand dune time..you said the all terrains are more square so the float better..exactly what digs in..and most people don't throttle out..stop the cutter turning out there at the corner and the sand builds up and you go up and over.
    Sand and snow are similar in that there are too many different types of snow and sand to say it's better for all occasions..the side lugs are important when your drifting on the pavement too. The muds are radiused on the edge at least half the lugs.if your talking about driving like an old lady go with the all terrains.

    I will take worse wet pavement stopping as about the only disadvantage to muds. My headers and exhaust are as loud as my tires so the noise doesn't bother me. Being able to clear out huge amounts of water and mud grip the sand... priceless

      Hey Rich, thanks for your input, which I totally get. I guess the thing here is, what's the easiest tyre for a newbie to drive on sand on? Down here in Australia we get a bunch of people who go out and get a 4x4 and the most aggressive tyres possible, then head to the beach and dig massive holes. This video was around targeting those folks, rather than those like yourself who have the experience wheeling offroad to be able to balance all the aspects required to get the most of our your vehicle.     These are geolander a/t-s g015 not a/t g015, better sidewall protection as well as treads on outer edge of a tire are more chunky blocks

      Hey Martin, we might actually go by different names here in Aus - I touched base with Yokohama Australia for more info:
      The G015 comes in PC construction and LT construction. The tread pattern differs but both are called G015. The ones we supplied for the video was LT construction.

      Wet sand is pretty straight forward, it's more like regular gravel, although aggressive driving will change that. Did you have a specific use case in mind?

      Pretty much, however there's more to it, as the MT casing is stronger, which means it doesn't bag out as much to then give it a bigger footprint.

      @@T1000.Android Yes, such as a timed circuit run with each tire, to see which tire has more grip. I mean that is one the most important aspect in sand, to not get stuck. Whats the point of a tire having good on road manners if off road its useless. They subjectively state that driving aggressive tread in sand is bumpy and you don't get better lateral grip, but thats not what most offroad drivers are doing. In a sand race course lateral grip would be good. Regular sand driving better grip would be above comfort aspects.

    If they're the exact same size tires just one is an AT and one is a MT, then why is there a ton of tire rub on one and not the other? They clearly aren't the same exact size like you claimed at the beginning.

      Hey Reklas, it's interesting you pick up on that. They were definitely the same size, but consider that the measurement they take for width (for example) is generally at the widest point of the tyre - the bulge, rather than the tread. The MTs have more tread depth, and a different tread size, so they're actually going to run bigger than an AT.
      Also, they were two different utes, and we had to remove the flaps and do some cutting to make the tyres fit, so it's highly likely that we didn't cut exactly the same amount on each vehicle 😁😝

    Mts have stronger sidewall they clean out easier and some tread patterns don't clinch rocks and throw them at ur mirror or side paint.....ATs roll better which means fuel economy they handle their own......sand isn't a really good test because driver is key steady fuel pressure given and 4wd psi because I've seen nitto 420s on my truck do excellent in sand just as good as my Terras do

      Hi mate, sand was the key thing tested here. Many people cruise into tyre shops thinking that they need the most aggressive tyres for their infrequent trips to the beach. What we wanted to demonstrate was the difference between AT vs MT on the sand with the same driver, so we can show how the average person will notice the difference between the two. The average person is more likely to dig in to the sand with an aggressive tyre, and also notice the lower comfort. While there are those who can drive to the tyre, like yourself, we need to use this sort of video to discuss the basics with those who are less familiar with the concept 👍

      The thing is, the AT's would always perform better in a side by side, no matter what the PSI. You can make an MT perform better by dropping the pressures lower, but then you're running the risk of popping it off the bead, and it'll probably still be less comfortable than an AT at a higher pressure.
      I like the idea of doing an AT vs MT on snow. That'd be an interesting one to set up... Thanks!

      yes, if you have beadlocks and air down too 8 psi, and stomping on the gas the mud tires will act a little like paddle tires, but for most the better tires are highway or all terrains, tall and aired down, for long footprint, air downed too 12 to 14 will get you most anywhere in any sand conditions, imo, i never drove on sand with mud tires, but i have done a lot of sand driving from silty too just really soft sand up and side hill beach driving and never got stuck, so saying that i think it’s more the experience of the driver. but one spin of a mud tire will dig down like a shovel, the all terrain tires won’t.

    All terrain tires float, mud terrain tires are designed to dig in. All terrain are not good in deep mud, mud terrain are not good in deep sand. Pick your poison.

Maybe a vaguely more road oriented AT like the Pirelli AT+, then a cross over like the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT, then something maaaad like a set of super swampers or Mickey Thompson Baja Boss MT 💪💪

    If these guys knew about tyres they would be testing the tyres on the right surface, as mud tyre means for mud and an all terrain means for all surfaces. The best tyre for sand is the smoothest tyre/bald tyre.

      Hi mate, that was exactly the intention. Feedback from tyre stores and elsewhere is that people come in and demand mud tyres, thinking they're the best for all off roading. This video was set up to test and prove that AT tyres are better than MT tyres on sand. Yes, an HT may have been better again, but here in Australia the choice for an off roader is generally between all terrain and mud terrain tyres, hence we looked at those two types of tread pattern. Make sense?

    Totally unfair comparison test hence you got the WRONG result. M/T's are much heavier in the side walls and designed to run at lower pressures than A/T's. In very soft sand M/T's pressures can and should be lowered to give you a bigger footprint and you also get assistance from the side biters. The one thing you have to be careful of is not to use so much power that the wheels spin and dig you in.

    Sorry but the amount of difference they are implying is completely contradictory to nearly every serious 4x4 review on this comparison, including my own experiences.
    You guys are not comparing apples to apples.
    You simply can not go further in sand on a AT compared to a modern MT when they are set up correctly and this was not a fair comparison.
    When operating a MT on sand you have to let out more PSI than a AT (which they are better built to handle) and this is because they have stronger side walls. When the MT's are set to bulge the same as the AT then you will find they are so comparable over sand its almost impossible to tell the difference. This is because its all about the size of the tyre surface area on the sand. The gaps between the treads fill up with the soft sand so its not about the pattern of the tread at all.
    The only time an AT will out drive a MT on sand is when they have the same PSI.
    Myth busters need to do a proper show on this wives tale.

      @@TyreReviewVideos - I didnt see where you clarified that in this video. Most people dont drive on "sand" (except for rare situations) but rather they drive on all kinds of other terrain, including loose, snowy, and muddy conditions.
      I'd suggest you do a side by side test like that and you'll get more viewer interest.

    I laugh every time i see australian "experts" driving on sand, the most important aspect of sand driving is low tire pressure, and "low" is in the single digits, less than 10 psi on small trucks like the Hilux, i have a Toyota Surf and i run 5 psi and if you drive like a normal person and not like an idiot you will not have issues with a tire popping off the wheel, if you're climbing and the wheels start hopping the problem is too much air in the tires. Look for "inskip" videos on youtube and you'll see how clueless are a lot of australians when it comes to sand driving, they believe they need a big powerful engine to drive their trucks in flat ground when the only thing they need is to let the air out of the tires.
    Regarding this test is obvious that an overinflated mud tire is going to dig more than an all terrain tire, in fact if you use paddle tires with too much air and low speed they are going to dig a hole inmediately and those are tires developed for sand use but you need to use them with the correct pressure and in the correct application

      Hi mate, that's absolutely fine for you, but the thing here is that we have to cater for the common denominator. Like you say, it's fine if you drive carefully, but I've seen tyres roll off the rim at higher pressures than than what you recommend. Driving longer distances on 5psi at any sort of speed can also cause the tyres to age prematurely due to overheating.
      12 to 16psi will work for 95% of people, on 95% of sand tracks. If you get stuck, lower your pressure. It also means in many cases that you can drive (slowly) to a near by service station to air up, saving time. Would you tell 95% of people to drive at 5psi all the time on sand?

      @@TyreReviewVideos I've driving 100+ kms a day in the desert with no issues to the tires, of course at low speeds and if we need to travel in harder ground we inflate the tires to a more adecuate pressure, that's why i always carry air compressors in the truck.

      Well now, that really depends on which country you come from! Tire is the preferred spelling in the U.S. and Canada. Tyre is preferred in most varieties of English outside North America. We're based in Australia, where it's entirely correct to use tyres, and entirely incorrect to use tires.
