Awesome video....tons of info for a person thinking on getting into baitcasting rods.... I've used spinning reels for the longest and that birdnesting keeps me away. Thanks again for a super informative video......
I’m trying to learn baitcasters right now. I love them. When I do everything right, it’s probably the most rewarding feeling I have while fishing. Aside from catching a biggun. A good baitcaster feels so great when you throw a perfect cast
What about hand orientation. I've always used spinning reels so I'm use to reeling with my left hand. Should I go with the standard right hand retrieval or just pick a left hand reel? Having to constantly switch hands every time you cast just seems annoying. Is there a specific reason for changing the reeling orientation or am I just reading too much into it? Excellent video by the way. This is by far the best tutorial I've found on picking a baitcaster, especially for a newbie like me.
Great question, I reel with my spinning hand on my left hand and baitcasters on the right. Feels natural to me and much easier to find right handed baitcasters than left handed one. I would recommend starting with the right hand baitcasters and if it doesn't feel right than switch to the lefties. You will have more options and choices from the right side.
Great video, do you have an old baitcast reel you can part with please? I am new to using a baitcast reel, I want to go fishing soon but it's been snowing here in Kansas. Thank you for reading my message and have a great evening.
Yeah I use the Pro G as well. Its an awesome reel, casts a mile. Since using the Magnesium and the Custom Pro SLP when I go back to the Pro G it feels heavy in comparison. Its still an amazing reel. If you like a little more weight in your hands and are happy with the Pro G, then by no means make the change.
Hey Joe! New sub and loving the channel! Quick question.....I've noticed some fishermen depressing the thumb bar to free the spool when fighting a fish instead of adjusting the drag. Is that hard on the reel? I can see where it would be faster than adjusting the star but I would hate to strip gears. Thanks! Keep up the great content and tight lines!!
+KC Bassin , great question, a lot of times when the fish gets close and still has a full head of steam I will depress the thumb button on my baitcasters and let them run and apply pressure with my thumb to the spool as a more finely tuned braking system. Most drags today are smooth but we crank them down for no slippage during the hookset and it's easier to press the button and "thumb" them. It should not hurt your reel in any way to do this.
I have used a small amount of grease, just a light coating. Too much grease will catch and trap dirt and debris. I don't think you can go wrong using a shot of oil on it either, I have done that from time to time.
It seems Lews went backwards with their new Tournament Pro LFS. Its so much heavier now and a bigger frame. I am guessing the weight is due to the brass gearing system? I am thinking they might have screwed up the $200 range for reels.
i just watched this to look at all those sweet lews reels... bout to buy another. should i go with the custom pro or the magnesium? im torn because i like the 95mm handle on the bb1 pro. 🤔

Great Video, Joe.
Thanks.
Very informative!
Thank you
I use Lews Tournament Pro G reels. Do you think I would be impressed with the Lews Custom Pro? The lighter they get the more worried I become.

Thanks! I'll have to give that a try next time I hook a fighter!
Hey Joe , I was told not to use grease on the worm gear, I use oil. Whats your opinion on that?

+BigFishLittleBoat , can't go wrong with any of them but the mag is top, dog. The new custom pro SLP is awesome too.
