Even if you’re not much of a gamer, try a Pikmin game. Sure, the early ones will take ten years off your life and turn all your hair gray, but at the end, you’ll still be saying “wow! More please!”
Pikmin biology is so weird. CA barely scratched the surface when it came to spiders, and in one of the games, there's a rocket launching bipedal goldfish.
There are also interesting entries regarding invasive species: the Horned Cannon Beetle is out-of-universe an upgraded model of 1’s Armored Cannon Beetle, but in-universe is a cousin of the latter from a different continent. They are capable of interbreeding, but half of the hybrids are non-viable, and the viable ones are diluting the Armored’s gene pool and are more aggressive, killing Armored Larvae.
The most interesting thing I find about the Pikmin biology is the insane symbiosis between the Pikmin and the Onion. The Onion uses the nutrients given to it by the Pikmin to not only cultivate Pikmin seeds but also to fuel itself. Furthermore, Onions can implant the genes from eaten creatures into the Pikmin seeds to grant them new abilities. The symbiosis is even more interesting considering how parasitic Pikmin are as a species.
What's even more interesting is the implication that the Pikmin use their parasitic tendencies in order to find an effective leader. Its like they realized that they cannot survive unless they have a Captain to command them, so they're trying to find a suitable host... Its implied that the Pikmin are somehow involved with the crash landings. And when an individual becomes a leafling, they have an unexplained obsession with "dandori," which in-practice is the most important thing for the propagation of the Pikmin and survival of the species. Its surprising how sinister the Pikmin seem to be, despite them being the cute and loveable mascots of the franchise.
The pikmin creatures are honestly one of the most fascinating creatures I have ever seen in a game. Also couldn't agree more about oatchi. He is the best boy.

Shoot, now I wanna play Pikmin. Another great video from you CA, love the factual approach you have with your introspects. You make even the most out there concepts sound so down to Earth like a documentary but still so very entertaining. Can’t wait to see whatever else you have planned for the future.
pikmin 2 is the easiest in the series I would start with that one. Also head straight to the submerged castle once you get blues bc then u get the best pikmin there
I'd imagined this man explain the biology of ARK SURVIVAL EVOLED and this was just majestic and it always never fails to become some what like a documentary.
I feel like Pikmin 4 has cemented the fact that humanity isn't gone. This isn't a critique on the video perse (nice job, minor inaccuracies but very good), but it seems this is a notion that's been going on in the fandom since Pikmin 2. Due to the map in Pikmin 3, we can see that this is likely around 100 million years in the future, even if Pikmin 4 is a soft reboot of the series, ut that still doesn't mean humanity is extinct. In the Heroes Hideaway, the area that is literally the inside of a house, the building is incredibly clean, aside from all the creatures and treasure lying around: no dust, no signs of dilapidation, bags packed, the stove is on, the fridge is opened and still cold. Houses don't last that long, not in that kind of condition. Not to mention the collapsing sandcastle you displayed in the third area. If humanity had gone extinct, that would have long collapsed. There's a cooking area in the middle of the campsite that is the Giant's Hearth and Collin notes not only that the creatures that use is must be massive, but also that it seems like it was used very recently. In fact the proximity of everything to Hero's Hideaway show that the people who live there are probably a family with kids. As you showed in your actual walk, junk is lying around, but humans are still VERY much present. Just because we don't see the humans doesn't mean they're gone. Spoilers below- There's also the final boss, a dog (albeit bipedal and evolved) that is wearing a collar. Someone had to have put that on him, and if humanity is gone, that wouldn't be the case.
Idk I feel like realistically the house would be in disarray after centuries of being abandoned but at the same time if people still exist how would they not notice that their home is over run with creatures? I personally find the universe more interesting if it is after the extinction of humanity, but in all fairness this franchise is not exactly consistent when it comes to lore.
(((Major Spoiler))) Isn't it implied by the final log from Shepard's family that humanity left the planet and evolved into the little, human-like aliens (Hocotatians, Koppaites, etc) we see in the games?
I've only played the first game, and not to completion. When I saw the signs of human life in the game from this video, it definitely doesn't look like humans are gone. I speculate that the creatures in this game are genetically modified by humans. They are probably high in nutrition, quickly reproduce, and some probably serve various uses in an out of the home. Like an edible ecosystem for your home.
I think the implication was that humanity (or at least the family that's implied to have lived in this house) left in a hurry over something, which is why everything still feels clean and functional. This is why you see stuff like suitcases packed up by the door in Hero's Hideaway. However this doesn't account for the fact that it seems like space dogs like Oatchi are near perfect DNA matches of dogs on PNF-404, and it would take millions of years for life to evolve and change onto other planets (including ours). The final boss gave me the impression that it was like a dog that got left behind when some people left, kinda like an evacuation. So maybe it's a situation where humanity has been gone for a long time, but visits occasionally? No clue
I think that those crystal formations that Onion roots into may serve some purpose. What value they hold. Pure energy (like sun/heat energy) or minerals that are consumed to form the Pikmins' body (or skeleton if they have it)
Even though I only recently started to look into speculative biology (and regular biology as well), I can trace my interest in the subject to the og Piklopedia in Pikmin 2, so it's awesome to see videos that cover the bizarre but surprisingly well thought out creatures that inhabit the world of Pikmin! I would love to see more Pikmin videos in the future, as there's even more to cover from just Pikmin 4, let alone the other 4 games in the series.
Curious Archive, thank you so much for this video. I grew up with pikmin being my favorite game series and I love everything speculative biology& evolution so Fr thank you you made my day so much better ❤
The gildemander is evolved specifically to prey on pikmin, as their antennae confuses them and their onions into thinking that it’s friendly like a captain
Nice, isn't it? You lived to see something you wanted to happen come true. Think about it. I say this counts as a highlight for your day. No matter how small, it is something you wanted and it happened.
What I like a lot with this franchise, is that, despite how warm colorfull and friendly cuttie in term of visuals, atmospheres and vibes/feeling everything in the game are onscreen, it still manaegd to give and display several dark, serious, obcure and somewhat scary eleemnts here and here. Firstly, the fact that the entire setting of every game occured on Earth, in a somewhat Post-Apocalyptic future where humanity is complete gone, extinct.... The fact that we are on Earth, our own planet, long into the future whithout any more human is NEVER offcially and directly said (for several obvious reasons), but it's very massively apparent and obvious. Even in the very first game we have, very few yes, but still undisputable humans' objects we found as Olimar despite we are mean to be in an alien planet. Mostly the display at the background of human's objects and infrastructures left abbandonned are the direct evidences of the setting.
Well spoken and put together! Lovely video! I have never seen any of the recent Pikmin games. The last time I played a pikmin game was a LONG time ago, back when I was… I think before I was a preteen. 7 or 8 maybe?? It was on the GameCube in a hotel of all places. I really want a computer port for Pikmin to experience that land again. You brought insight to a world I had once not given much thought. Clearly there’s more going for the world of Pikmin than I remembered! Thanks for the awesome video!
I kind of love the way you attribute real world analogous for even the most videogamey of creature designs in Pikmin, and I would definitely be intrigued to see comparably out there fictional ecosystems covered going forward (But also bringing it back to earth with your discussion on the ecosystems that form around trash, and how when you look at insects scurrying under rocks that's their panic response rather than their natural behaviour) Also, while not seen in Pikmin 4, the pikmin/bulborb hybrids in Pikmin 2 (Bulbmin) definitely lend further evidence that pikmin are parasitic plants which infect animal hosts. They can't be taken back to the onion with you, they can only be found underground, and they start out as enemies before they'll follow you apparently, but... They're there. Bulborbs with Pikmin-like leaves growing out of their back - similar to the infection Oatchi gets during the game, but on their heads - and once you assert yourself as their leader they will follow your commands like regular Pikmin do.
That part about how we're not really seeing them in their natural state, but their panic mode after we've disrupted their lives holds sooo true to not only many kinds of biology, but even other areas of science that don't revolve around living things. Our test apparatuses can tell us all sorts of fascinating things, but we're always creating some extremely artificial, extremely unlikely, extremely isolated environment in order to run those experiments. Catching one electron, or one photon, in an entirely sterile environment causes them to act in interesting ways which can give us information about how they work. But it's also not something they'd ever have reason to do in a world without humanity.
I've always loved how worlds like Pikmin or Pokemon can look so cartoonishly-stylized yet still give off the air of fully-realized biospheres of unique creatures and the wonders that nature can be home to. It really helps put into perspective about our own reality's amazing creatures that tend to be taken for granted. Side note: I believe the in-game characters note that Glow Pikmin are actually composed (at least partly) of light, to explain their flight and low mass. This could also explain their functional immunity to most chemical attacks (fire, poison, gas, ink) due to not having the same matter-based receptors to be affected by those attacks to begin with, as well as their nocturnal/subterranean lifestyle (as traditional sunlight may directly tamper with their photon-based bodies). May still be ghosts, but luminous beings indeed, not just crude matter.
AAAA!!! I've been a fan of Pikmin for the longest time! And I'm so happy to see it finally appear on this Channel! Such a surprisingly well developed world building! Great video! Love watching your videos about these amazing speculative evolution series!
Fun Fact: The Rock and Ice Pikmin are actually a subspecies of Pikmin called a "Hermikmin." A parasitic type of Pikmin that embeds itself into things and controls them with their root-like limbs. The rock Pikmin embed themselves into rocks for protection, and the Ice Pikmin uses ice as a host (they have a "low-temperature core" that prevents the ice from melting). Its also implied that the Onions have a stockpile of stones to use when producing new Rock Pikmin. Hermikmin are likely similar to (if not the same) species as the Bulbmin, which are parasitic Pikmin that root themselves into the spinal cords of infant Bulborbs to control their bodies (with the stem sticking out of their backs) for extra protection against all elements. When the Bulborb hosts get old enough, their insatiable hunger overtakes the Pikmin's control, which is why the adult ones will cannibalize other Pikmin or Bulbmin, while the little ones act like any other Pikmin.
Fun fact about Ice and Rock Pikmin: In-game studies suggest that, with Pikmin actually being parasitic creatures, that stray seedlings may have taken control of ice and rock! Sprouting from them and moving them much like bulbmin from Pikmin 2!
It would be funny to imagine how a root vegetable could eventually evolve into a parasitic eusocial colony species. I imagine the parasitic element would come first, maybe they started surviving consumption, and taking over hosts that ate them? Then over time increasingly developed parasitic control mechanisms began resembling the growth of animals in addition to swarm like developing behavior between hosts, which eventually produced pikmin who adapting to their environments and unique host organisms specialized into the different colors?
Okay idk if you’ll read this but CA, you have one of the most interesting and creative channels on RUclips. Your stuff is hella inspirational to me; informative and super entertaining. I hope to be able to create videos and art that are half as good as yours. Keep it up man :)
since you covered pikmin, I BEG you to cover splatoon (which I’m shocked you haven’t covered) learning the biology of the creatures found is somewhat tough, you have to play the games to learn that it takes plays thousands of years after humans have been extinct from an underground bunker that had a rocket ship failure. And how the only mammals that survive in these times are a mutant bear who dies and a single cat and it’s clone. The in game explanations on how the inklings evolved are sparse but are very apparent. It’s also very interesting to see how the different societies (squid culture, octoling culture, salmonid culture) have split apart from each other and become enemies. There are different languages that can be translated technically. One thing that they each do is repurpose things from human times and it’s interesting to see the ways that they do it. For instance a paint roller might become a weapon, a statue might be made into a large weapon etc. For such a colorful game, it’s science goes surprisingly deep, and you have to play it for a long time to really understand so I really hope you give it a chance
I feel so bad seeing the little pikmin getting eaten. They are so cute and tiny. Thank you for the interesting video, its fun learning about different games and their many creatures like this.
As for how Glow Pikmin work? We need to think of this like All Tomorrows. Like the well-evolved Asteromorphs, these beings have biology so far beyond our own understanding, that it seems like magic. Perhaps they have similar gas bladders to Winged Pikmin, allowing them to float. How do they disappear? Perhaps they compress themselves to remarkably small sizes, like several modern-day desert plants; Curling up & appearing dead, until making contact with water.
one video I would love to see was a documentary of the sapling a game where you can make your own creatures and plants and watch them evolve and diversify its sort of like spore, but you don't make a civilization and control a species you just make a species and watch them.
The comment about Pikmin being eusocial got me thinking. Another feature of a eusocial species is a usually lone female that handles reproduction in the colony, such as ant or termite queens. They are often biologically different from the other members of the colony for the purpose of mass reproduction like the Empress Bulbax. I wonder if that’s what an onion is, a member of the pikmin colony that acts as a queen, producing new members and being cared for by the rest of the colony.

A family of creatures that are very interesting are the Arachnorbs. I'd like to point out specifically the Beady Long Legs and the Baldy Long Legs, which seem to be the most basics Arachnorbs. These, like the rest of the family, seem to have all of their organs condensed in the only highlighted part of its body, being the orb at the center, because the rest consists exclusively of four legs. So this actual body, as it is an orb, doesn't seem to have an actual internal structure, so it is unknown how the organs are stored. And investigating this with an specimen seems impossible, as the body disintegrates when unalived.
You should look into the animals in “Made in Abyss”. Super interesting creatures. The tamerind dragon especially seems actually malicious compared to the orbed piercer that just seems like hyper aggressive herbivore.
"Who’s joe?" a distant voice asks. Instantly everyone nearby hears the sound of 1,000s of bricks rapidly shuffling towards his location. The earth itself seemed to cry out in agony, until finally the ground itself split open and a horrific creature crawled from the ground, covered in mucus and tar. ”Joe Momma…” the creature whispered. The man cried out in pain as he disintegrated into dust, and the whole world fell silent in fear. "I did a little trolling." the wretched creature remarked before burrowing back into the earth.
I really love this franchise ! Pikmin as a whole isn't a complete perfect Spec Evo World (it's still messy here and here, in each game), but I am still always interested about the overall take the franchise do with the domain. Wasn't a goal to made a Spec Evo thing in a the first place, and ended up being part of that unvolontary, but I'm very happy how the franchise turned up with what it had gived to us since the very first game to this days ! For the most part, most of the creatures are viable, some others a little less (the ghost-like ones especially), but I would still think it would be better if that was gived to us from which animals families each creatures belong (Bulborgs are what?). But in the same time, if so many stuff is still unanwsered after 4 main games and some little side mini-games, it because it due to be that we are completely in the protagonnists perspective, who are completely unaware of the world past and history. In such aspect, the franchise give a pretty good depiction and simulation about what the exploration of a living aliens planet, even after several expeditions, would be !

@@lasercraft32 True, maybe they come from the same place as the wraiths
the part about the ghost pikmin is so genius! at first i thought you were just breaking character, but then realized it was all in the perspective of a lost scientist trying to find logic to an undead form of "life". I definitely love the comedic bits you're throwing in some of these videos, keep up the good work as always
I didn’t know Pikmin had such an incredible variety of unique creatures. I may not be a gamer, but I LOVE these video game ecosystem videos!
Its so good
I'm dying at "Snout Whacker" 😅. Some of those names are really interesting. Going to have to try this at some point.
You just gave me a weird thought. What if Pikmin aren't trying to be parasitic but trying to recreate that symbiosis and failing?
@@lasercraft32 where is it implied the pikmin are involved in crash landings?
it's so charming and heart warming to see the series I loved since childhood grow to such a widespread name in gaming
The pikmin creatures are honestly one of the most fascinating creatures I have ever seen in a game.
Also couldn't agree more about oatchi. He is the best boy.
Finally we gonna talk about serious topics, real biology
Pikmin
PIKMEN RAHHHH
I love this sort of documentary of Pikmin 4’s ecosystem, makes the game’s world feel more special.
God I love Pikmin, and hearing CA with his perfect documentary voice talking about the creatures so seriously and factually is wonderful!
It’s funny how perhaps because of your tone and way speaking everyone seems to comment in a very articulate and grammatically correct manner. I love it it’s as if you are making us smarter just with the sound of your voice😊
I also love how he breaks it to tells us that doesn’t know how to classify the Glow Pikmin 😂
I think this is one of those channels that attracts an amazing audience.
Honestly, I think its just that the type of audiences that enjoy watching his style of video are the kind of people to make articulate and grammatically correct comments. Like-minded people are often drawn to one another, y'know?
As someone who majored in Entomology, games like Pikmin are really fun because of how they include so many small critters!
So glad the Pikmin world is finally being talked about on this channel.
PLEASE, make a part two 🙏 this video is awesome
I am loving the addition of pikmin to this channel. Even with the release of 4, it’s still underrated!
Also head straight to the submerged castle once you get blues bc then u get the best pikmin there
@@MrHocotateFreight Thanks for the suggestion!
@@QuirkyMaster Thanks fir the heads up!
You must *pick men*
@@HlootooThunderhammerMake sure to spend 5 minutes on each sublevel in the Submerged Castle. You’ll get some secret treasures!
Spoilers below-
There's also the final boss, a dog (albeit bipedal and evolved) that is wearing a collar.
(((Major Spoiler)))
Isn't it implied by the final log from Shepard's family that humanity left the planet and evolved into the little, human-like aliens (Hocotatians, Koppaites, etc) we see in the games?
This, i really dislike the idea that "oh humans are still around" i fell like it goes against the themes and athmosphere of the series
No clue
A surprising topic, to be sure, but a welcome one.
Finally. You talk about pikmin. If loved both pikmin and your channel for YEARS. Seeing you cover the spec zoo side of pikmin is a dream come true.
Curious Archive making a video on my favorite game series of all time, this is amazing.
I didn’t realize how curious I was about pikmin biology till I saw the notification
I think that those crystal formations that Onion roots into may serve some purpose. What value they hold. Pure energy (like sun/heat energy) or minerals that are consumed to form the Pikmins' body (or skeleton if they have it)
They do have skeletons. In pikmin 2 when they're electrocuted, you can see their skeletons!
The pikmin games always make me want to go outside and just… look at stuff. No other game has ever made me actually want to go outside before…
Curious Archive, thank you so much for this video. I grew up with pikmin being my favorite game series and I love everything speculative biology& evolution so Fr thank you you made my day so much better ❤
I love how this is like a Pikmin nature documentary, excellent work
The gildemander is evolved specifically to prey on pikmin, as their antennae confuses them and their onions into thinking that it’s friendly like a captain
BRO HE ACTUALLY DID IT! I BEEN ASKING FOR IT FOR LITERALLY YEARS!!
WE LOVE PIKMIN
Nice, isn't it? You lived to see something you wanted to happen come true.
Think about it. I say this counts as a highlight for your day. No matter how small, it is something you wanted and it happened.
@@SergioLeonardoCornejo ask and you shall receive, right? Definitely going to be a highlight of my day!
I kind of love the way you attribute real world analogous for even the most videogamey of creature designs in Pikmin, and I would definitely be intrigued to see comparably out there fictional ecosystems covered going forward (But also bringing it back to earth with your discussion on the ecosystems that form around trash, and how when you look at insects scurrying under rocks that's their panic response rather than their natural behaviour)
Also, while not seen in Pikmin 4, the pikmin/bulborb hybrids in Pikmin 2 (Bulbmin) definitely lend further evidence that pikmin are parasitic plants which infect animal hosts.
Pikmin 4 is my gotysf. I love Totk but Pikmin 4 honestly feels like the culmination of 20 years of this incredibly unique series

Thanks for letting me know Pikmin 4 is out. I was so hype for the OG game when I was 12.
Can you please make a biology video on The Eternal Cylinder’s ecosystem?
No
No there just ghosts
Your videos get better and better, you are my favourite youtuber
This is so silly yet so informative, very enjoyable :D
one video I would love to see was a documentary of the sapling a game where you can make your own creatures and plants and watch them evolve and diversify its sort of like spore, but you don't make a civilization and control a species you just make a species and watch them.
I have always loved that Earth's name is an error message. PNF-404... Error 404 - Planet Not Found. lol
Oh wow, love this video--and love that you included the "real" footage of your walk. You just keep inventing CA!
I believe PNF-404 stands for “Planet Not Found-404” like on 2000’s web browsers when the pages doesn’t load 😂😂

Am I the only one who finds the entire Pikmin universe, including the Pikmin, absolutely terrifying?
I hope you examine the areas from the past 3 games because those also have some unique environments. Not to mention the many cave types
I knew you'd eventually make one of these! I'm pretty sure I suggested Pikmin all the way back on the Monster Hunter World videos!
Thank you for doing this, i've been a Pikmin fan from day 1 and a fan of your channel since you popped up in my recommended just over a year ago. Very grateful for this completely unexpected crossover!
As I was watching this, a caterpillar’s weight pulled a dead leaf down with him on it. I imagine his experience is similar to this game.
Pikmin 4 seems to suggest that humanity isn't as gone as previous games have suggested.
You absolute madlad, you actually did it. God bless you.

Thanks for finally making a video about Pikmin, even though I like Pikmin 3 a lot more than 4. I still hope you'll make a video for The Eternal Cylinder someday. 🍃
its nice to see pikmin become so popular
after over 20 years of being fairly obscure
Ah yes, the peaceful swarm of fish that will not only slowly eat away all your blue pikmin if you dont take them out immediately, but will also jump up and eat any flying pikmin you may have from the sky. So peaceful
Had no idea the lore was so detailed
You should look into the animals in “Made in Abyss”. Super interesting creatures. The tamerind dragon especially seems actually malicious compared to the orbed piercer that just seems like hyper aggressive herbivore.
I second this
It’s a ghost. I’ve got nothing. 10/10 deadpan with a side of humor
0:58 yes it is, theres to much good unrotten food + the garden from pikmin 4 look WAY to well kept

I’m not sure you understand how happy I am that you are doing a video about pikmin, it is one of my favorite video games(maybe do pikmin 1,2 and 3)
I really love this franchise !
Awesome video. Could you do a Skylanders biology as well?
19:28 "This, is an empress *bulbax"*
It's Bulb-lax just so you know

I remember seeing a post about a glass bottle that was discarded in a wooded area decades ago. The bottle was surrounded by dozens of snail shells. Local birds had learned to use it smash the shells open for generations. The “What We’ve Left Behind” section (11:38) reminded me of this.
