I think we can all agree that Izaw is probably the most inspiring Smash player ever to date. I can tell he invests so much time and effort into these Art videos which are extremely helpful. This guy is the reason why I don't care about tier lists at all. Every character has strengths and weaknesses. Even characters considered to be top 8 or 3 have weaknesses. No matter what character you main, always aim for the maximum, NOT the bare minimum. Minimum is okay but progressing from that is even better. Every character is amazing in their own little ways and that is what makes the Smash Roster so special. Every character's play-style is different. Honestly, any character can win. Yeah, you have weaknesses but surely there is always a solution to that! Izaw, in every Art of Smash video you have done, I'd give all of them equal gratitude. You discover little quirks that characters have in their moveset and combo game and that really makes me smile. I know all characters are amazing because they all have something that's unique. You are awesome. That's all I can say really. Thanks for doing the Smash community proud!
F-smash has 3 hitboxes, rather than just a sweetspot and a sourspot. Strongest at startup, strong in the middle and weak at the end. Plucking during a dash will reset Olimar to a neutral position in just 9 frames, meaning he can stop completely, jab, tilt or smash out of a dash really quickly. B-reversing pluck while doing this will let Olimar jab/dtilt in the other direction aswell. Just thought that was worth mentioning. ^^ Awesome video. You captured what Olimar is really about; dynamically switching between offensive and defensive styles, rather than just being very defensive (I feel like most people see Olimar as a purely defensive character). You got pretty much all the information in there without making it uninteresting. Amazing work as always!
I honestly think people fall into a rigid idea of a characters play style, In my opinion you should be reading the momentum and switch your play accordingly, Use your defense to maximize your offense and vice versa
Finn Marr-Heenan My thoughts precisely :) Some characters are more prominent in either defence or offence, but there is no character that can rely on just one of them.
Thanks for doing a video of my main Izaw, even though I basically knew the character. It is nice to have a touch up of him from time to time. Great video and keep up your amazing work for the community!
Going to help you out, you have less views than even little kids who write horrible breakdowns of olimar. I'm linking this video on their comments because this is a very thorough smart breakdown and its beautiful.
Very informative guide, I like it. These guides make me want to play as the character too. Could you please do pac man as I'm fully convinced I'm the only one who doesn't think he's trash...
Elravino Gallade I used to main him, but he requires so much effort to play effectively so I picked up Greninja instead (Greninja requires less effort and is more fun to play imo)
AvioX yeah, there's not many pacmans for that reason u-u. but still, I feel like no one has unlocked its full potential yet, that is basically why I have not gave up on him haha
I gotta make another comment now, this video is absolutely the most fantastic Olimar guide ever, even trumping Dabuz's guide. You give everything, from his purpose as a zoner to how he zones, his down smash utility, whistle armor, even what teams of Pikmin to use! This is absolutely wonderful, and again, as an Olimar main I really appreciate this.
This guide is soooo good and in depth. Definitely worth a subscription. Also The music choice is so good. I can tell you actually played Pikmin before. My Nostalgia is pumping so hard rn lol
Ah yes, the top tier Olimar/Alph, the most superior out of Smash. Not even Sheik, ZSS, Cloud, etc. can outlast the powerhouse, that is Olimar/Alph. I just don't know why not a lot of people use him, I mean he's such a good charcter for crying out loud!! Btw nice guide Izaw

I personally believe Captain Olimar is the most accurate depiction of his series counterpart. He plays so much like he does in his game with very few changes. They took few liberties and he's most true to his original form.
One of my favorite things about Olimar as a character in smash is that he isn't like the other characters. Some characters are really deep, have all these powers and are super heroic, but Olimar is just a middle-aged guy with a wife and kids who just crash landed on a distant planet. By befriending a set of its inhabitants, he was able to go home. Alph is a little more deep, as he has more reason to go to PNF-404, but is still just a normal guy, without powers.
Wow, Olimar's actually a far more interesting character than I thought. Then again, I meet very few people that play him so it was hard to see his potential.
Aside from Dabuz retweeting my trash tweet and causing my phone to blow up in the middle of Chemistry, this is a very cool and informative video on my favorite captain, Oli/Al. Thank you for this video! I've been using him for years and I've learned some things I haven't noticed before.
I'd love to see "Art of Villager", "Art of Duck Hunt", "Art of Pacman", "Art of Bayonetta", "Art of Yoshi", "Art of Peach", or "Art of ROB" next! Those would all be my personal favorites to see, as I think they are all pretty complex characters. :) Some other ones I think would be interesting would be "Art of Rosalina and Luma", "Art of King Dedede", "Art of Greninja" (In honor of Greninja Saga), "Art of Robin", "Art of Shulk", "Art of Megaman", and "Art of Ryu". You missed some facts about the blue, white, and purple pikmin. Blues are immune to water based damage, though its uncommon knowledge because the attacks to use this and deal damage are hydro pump and greninjas taunt. White pikmin move the fastest in walking, air speeds, and in smash attacks and the side special, while purples are slower in the same places. The walking and air speeds dictate how quickly they can get back to olimar after separated. While they can all jump to reach him, if he is too far, purples will tend to fall, but whoever is last in the queue will probably fall regardless, as their movement is intentionally delayed so the pikmin move in a line following olimars movement as closely as possible. PS greninjas water shuriken and water swords count as blade damage and can harm blues
I'd very much like to see Villager, Mewtwo, or Shulk next, and thank you so much for this video, I've been an Olimar main since Brawl and this really helps me get better at him
These videos are so helpful for finding a main, learning a matchup and general understanding of sm4sh. These videos are great, and I can't wait for the next. Keep up the good work!
This comment will simply be an alternative that will correspond to the video above in terms of information about Olimar's/Alph's Combos, Neutral, Moves, Recovery etc etc. My goal being to see if I can cram as much info in this without dragging it on or at least making it a shorter alternative to watching the video (at the cost of some specifics though). Olimar's/Alph's *frame data.* kuroganehammer.com/Smash4/Olimar *Pikmin attributes* *Redmin's* are *immune to fire.* Throw/attack modifiers = -20% and +20%. 8% HP. *Yellowmin's* are *immune to electricity.* Throw/attack modifiers = - both aren't affected, although they have 25% larger hitboxes and have more hitlag. 8% HP. *Bluemin's* are *immune to drowning.* Throw/attack modifiers = x1.0 and +60%. 11% HP. *Whitemin's*. Throw/attack modifiers = -+0% and -20%. Whitemin's have the longest grab reach, deal 4% pummel damage and have the most side-b throw reach and speed. 7% HP. They move the fastest. *Purplemin's.* Throw/attack modifiers = -+0% and +40%. Purplemin have the shortest reach overall when grabbing, throwing (they knockback when thrown though), and smashing, although they deal the most shieldstun and damage and have the most knockback. 13% HP. They have the lowest mobility and are the heaviest. *Gameplan* - Olimar is, in all situations, a *zoning* character. Zoning, is often thought as, from most, as a campy, boring, defensive type of play. In essence, zoning is a *feature that occupies a particular amount of space,* so zoning can be aggressive and defensive when the right circumstances come to play in SSB4. Firstly, Olimar excels at option coverage the *most,* allowing him to beat out many ground options, landings, and aerial approaches to win the neutral. *Damage racking, well spaced shield pressure, ground positioning, and catching landings with his F-smash, pivot grab, Pikmin toss (Purples only), normal grab, and dash grab are a second must with the character.* To mitigate having one of the most dominate ground games present within SSB4, Olimar's pikmin act as projectiles when they have active hitboxes (thanfully they're big), meaning one's that have immunities to elements will blow through, but non-elemental moves will blow through them. His mobility in the air is low, his ground mobility is only average, he's light, most of his moveset depends upon his pikmin, and although his recovery is one of the longest, it is very exploitable because he must toss pikmin to get the reach it needs. He also lacks kill setups (making good reads a must). This means when you start *adequately dominating* the ground, opponents will sooner or later *take to the air* to null his powerful grounded neutral. Aerial assaults can be *baited and reacted* to naturally, however, making minor errors in spacing and judgement can cost Olimar *dearly,* as his weight, meh OoS options, dependence on his pikmin, floatiness, the low priority of the pikmin, and exploitable recovery can cause Olimar to die early with Rage (Olimar is a good abuser of the mechanic too). Caution is advised in all actions the player takes. *Basic Combos* - D-throw (from any grab) -> Nair (going for Fair/Bair/Uair replacing Nair is good too) -> Fair/Bair/Air Side-B. Jab -> Dash grab -> D-throw -> Nair -> Fair/Bair. D-tilt -> Jab (both hits) -> Dash grab -> D-throw -> any aerial besides Dair. *Tools within neutral* - F-smash (a utility smash that's safe on block when spaced properly), Side-B (damage racking and forces approach, even at higher percent when pikmin stick less), Short hop Side-B (when additional range is needed), Down-B (useful for re-syncing pikmin into their intangible state, changing the order, armor on frames 6-12 allow for safe landings and mindgames at the ledge, difficult to time though) neutral-B (replacing pikmin ties his whole set together and B-reversing enhances movement options), Pivot Grab (one of the best in the game at "sniping" aggressive approaches and landings), Dash Grab (good reads needed for this one), Jab (decent OoS that leads to Dash attack/Grab for D-throw combos or D-tilt into Nairs/Fairs/ Bairs), D-tilt (a deceptively ranged attack that props opponents above Olimar for Jab to connect that leads to tech chases at mid-higher percents and a dash grab at lower), F-tilt (a move that deals great kncokback and should be used to avoid pikmin being beat out and force a trade), D-Smash (good OoS that can pressure shields if both pikmin hit, setup up tech chases and edgeguarding AND 2-frame the ledge), Nair (multi-hitting move for crossing up shields, dragging foes into combos, juggling, and breaking combos at low %s), Fair/Bair (utility aerials that allow, pseudo-safe landing, combo, killing at high %s, edgeguarding, spacing, combo extending, and force tech chases at low %s, Fair is his best OoS too), U-tilt (good vertical placement with multi-hits makes it a good anti-air and combo extender), Dair (for 2-framing the ledge with a downward hitbox that spikes and edgeguarding off-stage), and lastly, Uair (for juggling and ending combos).
Did you know, If an opponent throws a projectile, olimar can throw a pikmin to block the attack. This will result in either the pikmin dying or getting stunned.
I have found a really good jab lock for olimar. So you jab, then jump and nair near the ground and quickly jump up and down air spike. Have done it many times and its great.

maybe not for difficult characters but your mostly right
Olimar looks more intensive and intricate than most... this shit is crazy coverage.
Brendan Byrne oh trust me, there's been times where I've killed bayo from two grabs

So true. Also Shulk, he has a lot of tech to the point were he has an entire website dedicated to it.

I'm proud you didn't forget Alph....in the first part of the video.
One does not simply
"Get gud at Olimar"
I hated this character. Now i want to play him. stop making such good videos izaw smh
right when I think a character is bad Izaw has to make a video making them look awesome!
Thank you Izaw for helping me play Olimar.
Olimar's/Alph's *frame data.*
kuroganehammer.com/Smash4/Olimar
*Pikmin attributes*
*Redmin's* are *immune to fire.* Throw/attack modifiers = -20% and +20%.
*Basic Combos* - D-throw (from any grab) -> Nair (going for Fair/Bair/Uair replacing Nair is good too) -> Fair/Bair/Air Side-B. Jab -> Dash grab -> D-throw -> Nair -> Fair/Bair. D-tilt -> Jab (both hits) -> Dash grab -> D-throw -> any aerial besides Dair.
Did you know,
If an opponent throws a projectile, olimar can throw a pikmin to block the attack. This will result in either the pikmin dying or getting stunned.
"A small carrot can become as useful as a knife if you know what your doing"
I have found a really good jab lock for olimar. So you jab, then jump and nair near the ground and quickly jump up and down air spike. Have done it many times and its great.
I started using Alph and Olimar because their games are so awesome. I play it to practice Pikmin management.
Sooo lookin forward to getting home from work and checking this out!! ^^
Please Izaw, you gotta make a Pacman guide! I've always wanted to play him and lets all be honest, any clip where Pacman wins is stupid hype
You finally made Olimar/Alph useful! Great video!
I watch all of these not to learn the characters, but to learn what OTHER people are going to do with the characters.
I love olimar in both smash and the Pikmin games. He is my second main behind diddy
Art of Yoshi!
BCXdarkblade and down air..
I hope you guys are joking XD
BCXdarkblade And forward air...
Man I play Bowser Jr. so much and it sucks knowing that it'll be forever until that episode is made.
Nice video! Keep it up!
High-key about to main Olimar for a week because of you
I never realized that olimar was this good.
I usually use the whistle multiple times to get the Pikmin i want for the grab, air, or smash attack
Dis guide helped me have more knowledge towards using Olimar's pikmin management (Alph too ;3)
A great idea for character guides would be some of the ones that have limited info out there, like game and watch and Charizard!
The art of Olimer for you know, the one person that plays him.
