    Not the least of what a musician has to do is choose how far he or she is going to project or sublimate his or her perceived identity. This is closely linked to ego. The second viola player in a large classical ensemble will typically sublimate his or her own identity to the music, and seek no individual attention. The ego is quiet. But it’d be tough to be Mick Jagger without a substantial ego and massive projection of it through his on-stage persona. How far does the leader of the group you’re in require you to project or sublimate your identity? And this question has a different answer every time you get on stage with a different bunch of people. Not much point in being a mouse if asked to play drums with the Buddy Rich Big Band, or front King Crimson, or be one of the principals in a band called Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe.
    And this projection/sublimation thing is fluid and adjustable as every gig unfolds; indeed, as every song unfolds. The trick, I think, is to know yourself and be aware of this and all that is going on around you. The best practitioners are acutely sensitive to the (usually unspoken) dynamic at play among the human participants, and the correct reading of the situation. Like others in the animal kingdom, we can blend into the background or leap forward with vibrant colours, and all points in between.
    Here are six time-honoured ways to contain or reduce your ego. Like everything worthwhile doing, it’s easier said than done:
    • Stop comparing yourself to others.
    • Always stay a student. Put yourself in places where you are the least knowledgeable person.
    • Surrender need for control. Allow things to be out of, or beyond, control.
    • Don’t value other people’s opinions, good or bad.
    • Look for small measures of your own progress; however defined, however small.
    • Connect with a purpose higher than just yourself.

    ABWH were a moment in time. But it went too far and created Union. The greatest gift it gave was to give Bill the freedom to do what he wanted in his own musical world. But he did enjoy the roar of 20,000 good people.

    I want a live recording of Quartet, it's my favorite song on the YES, I mean AWBH album. I've watched a couple of these ABWH songs and you are smiling and looking like you're having fun. I saw this tour at Blossom Music Center near Cleveland.

    Great performance, and a great read in the description. I have heard recordings where it seems to me that one or more of the players were projecting themselves too much or sublimating themselves too much, and I've always wondered how musicians in a group context so often seem to know exactly how much of their own personal identity to project into the work, and even how a musician can reach a point where they feel (rightly or wrongly) that they have found their right role in the work. It's not a science after all, much less an exact one.

    • @ericbrunel8933
      @ericbrunel8933 Год назад +1

      I remember reading an article from him at the time, and if I recall correctly, the answer is: not long. 😅 Tony Levin fell sick during the tour, but the show had to go on, so I think he had to learn all the material in a matter of days, including all the Yes stuff he knew nothing about...

    • @rumourhats
      @rumourhats Год назад

      @@ericbrunel8933 It's mad how he could learn it all so quickly! But I suppose, it helps being a bass-supremo.

    • @ericbrunel8933
      @ericbrunel8933 Год назад

      @@rumourhats Well, it's not easy to see since he's kept in the dark in these videos - and our host has rightfully complained about that, it's really a shame - but he has sheet music right in front of him. Obviously, it's not enough, and I'm sure he had to rehearse all of it before getting on stage, but at least, he didn't have to learn it all by heart. That was the point of his article actually: he was a regular columnist in Bass Player magazine back in the days, and he often insisted on the fact that doing your homework and learning to read music, doing scales and arpeggios and whatnot was much more likely to get you a job in music than noodling around hoping to become the next Sting or John Deacon. And he took this gig as an example: he'd done the work, he could do it on short notice, he got hired - well, obviously, having played with Bill Bruford before might have been a bit helpful too. 😉

      I read/heard he was a HUGE Yes fan and knew the songs as well as anyone already. As much as I appreciate Mr. Levin, Berlin gave those old songs on that night a big dose of accuracy that Levin couldnt have.
