I love this song, i had to end things with my last boyfriend because he started heroin. She sings it exactly how i feel about it, its impossible to change, so there is sadness but wrapped in reluctant acceptance.
My good freind and a member of my family both suffered from opiate addiction. They both died as a result of their addiction. This song takes on a special meaning for me because I saw them struggle and then lose the battle in the end. My brother calls it a form of enslavement and I think that is accurate.
This cover is so amazing, it's one of those you find better than the original song. At least, I do. I'm a huge Marling fan, but I knew Neil Young before her and liked this song, but I prefer her version. It's perfect I daresay o.O !
@43geebee21 i think it's on her website and was made just after the release of 'I Speak Because I Can', guessing from the 'Laura Marling' logo at the beginning and end it was officially made and probably just another gem for her fans. i absolutely love it and actually heard it before the original!
@Eavis4president - well, can I just say that you should really learn more about Jewel. She happened to record most of her first album at Neil Young's ranch and has supported both Young and Dylan on tour. Jewel in past years has veered from the path a little but her stuff before about 2003 was mostly incomparable in the modern generation.
I went to her gig last year. Her mother said that she always said that Laura wrote this song herself, because she was so proud of her daughter... not realizing that the song is about drugs. xD
@43geebee21 the original's by neil young, his music is mainly themed on love, loss, n war. he lost alot of good friends and other talented musicians to heroin
@guyinahat1 Well, I wouldn't ask if it was a bad cover if I hadn't heard the orginal myself. I'm a Neil Young fan, too, kind of. Been listening to him alot. It's hard to not like him if you are a omnivore (whitin quality music); atleast for me.
@Eavis4president - OK no problem lol. I'm not a Jewel obsessive or anything btw. I'm actually listening to Laura alot more at the moment. I just think comparing someone who has been around for only about 4 years to someone who has been around for over 15 years is jumping the gun a little.
And so it comes full circle via YT. Neil Young toJason Molina to [something I forgot but I'm sure it was excellent] to Jeffrey Lewis to Laura and back to Neil. Now I'm off to something called Norma Tanega.
Audrey Dugas this is fucking awesome thanks for showing me this magnificent Laura Marling years ago. Its Ian Davies BTW YOU LOOK JUST LIKE HER. I've told you that millions of times but yeah haha. P.S. Sorry for kissing you on the head months ago after I fucked up your favorite song on guitar. I just wish you liked me again. Continually or ending. I guess you chose ending. But, I Just thought The needle and the damage done. Enough damage was done by kissing you on the head. awk.
@YouCanCallMeArissa - yes it is. There are 2 Jewel versions of this song that I'm aware of (maybe 3). One of them (the Billboard version) is awful. But her other version is just like this one, and loyal in almost every respect to the original. Over the past few years Jewel has got a bit carried away with herself and is not the same as she used to be. At this point in time Laura is ALOT better than her.
This is when I first discovered this incredible talent ❤❤❤
Brilliant cover!
whaaaat??? I never knew she covered this song!! I'm a huge Neil Young and Laura Marling fan, this brings both those worlds together for me
❤
I have listened to this song 26 times today.
She so beautiful. She reminds me of a child but with more wisdom than a 50 year old.
Wow. Never saw this. She’s amazing but it breaks my heart to hear her sing this. Something tells me she’s seen it too. So young
i've probably watched this video atleast 40 times. she did a great job. :) she's beautiful, and has one of the most amazing voices i've ever heard.
Love this song, love Neil Young, love Laura Marling... Love, love, love.
Thanks. Spending the evening remembering my past experience.
How can you possibly think that? This is such a beautiful cover.
Great cover..love neil young..love this song..awesome.
she sang this when i saw her live, i think i remember her saying something about it being a special song to her and her dad :-)
This was the first song I've heard from here...never looked back since :) You go girl!
Best cover I have heard of this tune, can really feel it.
Great cover of the folk/country master neil young. theres no pretence with laura and I love that about an artist.

I rest my chin on the guitar like that when I play sometimes. She's my idol totally!
this is beautiful x laura marling you're an inspiration!
Beautiful
Love Laura and everything she does
amazing! especially the way she seems to fall asleep on the guitar

Great voice:):):)
laura we love you
Excellent, would love to see u sing with Neil, for me that would outstanding defo )
saw this on vimeo. love it.
This song is beautiful
wish it was longer
this song is so heart breaking once you pay attention to the lyrics.. :(
Cool 😎 song
Its' nowhere the original... BUT! It's very good on its own!!!! well done!
Interesting how her voice is slightly deeper than Neil Young's. Great cover
Quality singing :)
love you, laura ~newfan
Not like it LOVE it!!
This is a great cover of my favourite Neil Young song. It says "official" was it released as a single???
@Eavis4president - well, can I just say that you should really learn more about Jewel. Is this song about Heroine. THE NEEDLE, the junkie, needle damage done. It makes sense.
nice version Laura, and i love your jazz guitar, can you give me the name of the model, its an american guitar
?
ITs a Harmony, don't know the model....
it's a Harmony - Cremona VII H1307 (probably =P)
@RayasNegroOvejas Nah it's not a bad cover. The original was by Neil Young. Neil Young fans are just very protective is all.
@guyinahat1 I don't think it's a bad cover - It's obviously different from the original, but what would be the point of doing an exact replica? :S
@guyinahat1
Well, I wouldn't ask if it was a bad cover if I hadn't heard the orginal myself. I'm a Neil Young fan, too, kind of. Been listening to him alot. It's hard to not like him if you are a omnivore (whitin quality music); atleast for me.
My 5 year old sister looks like a tiny version of her in this video.
Time to being teaching her guitar and getting her to sing like this.
@Eavis4president - OK no problem lol. I'm not a Jewel obsessive or anything btw. I'm actually listening to Laura alot more at the moment. I just think comparing someone who has been around for only about 4 years to someone who has been around for over 15 years is jumping the gun a little.
i had no idea this was a neil young song...wow o_o
Is it supposed to go silent after the black screen with her name on it?
@KaraLynneJones It's because it's a cover of a Neil Young song.
Why does it only play half?
Isn't it beautiful the way the sings with the chin leant on her guitar? I thought I was the only one
Godess
i think it might have been her look for the song...at times it does look like the needle has done the damage to her (not literarly) just for the clip
And so it comes full circle via YT. Neil Young toJason Molina to [something I forgot but I'm sure it was excellent] to Jeffrey Lewis to Laura and back to Neil.
Now I'm off to something called Norma Tanega.
why does the volume randomly go off? :\
I find this video compelling because she looks like she's using. Pale, mellow - nice cover but the video really seals it.
Jack White recorded this and Blues Runs the game for Laura Marling didn't he?
@YouCanCallMeArissa - on this cover Jewel and Laura are about equal I think. And although Laura is amazing, overall Jewel is in a different league.
Does anybody have the chords to this version?
Pretty sure its the original chords from the neil young version but she has capo 8th fret
Does anybody just hear half of the song?
excuse you
Laura Marling is like water on roses.
laura marling and james blake need to get together
This version reminds me of Nick Drake.
@43geebee21 its a neil young song
did she cut her own fringe..? Despite that, she looks veery cute :)
She looks so young here.
ya mean 'official' *?
she's incredible...she just looks high in the video haha.
@ItsTiedToAStick no need to be mean just because you don't like it. just move to the next video.
i never knew she was so pale.. shes lovely
@ItsTiedToAStick
Ha! Really? There are many bad covers out there, what makes this bad? Is it too close the orginal?
Audrey Dugas this is fucking awesome thanks for showing me this magnificent Laura Marling years ago. Its Ian Davies
BTW YOU LOOK JUST LIKE HER. I've told you that millions of times but yeah haha.
P.S. Sorry for kissing you on the head months ago after I fucked up your favorite song on guitar. I just wish you liked me again. Continually or ending. I guess you chose ending. But, I Just thought
The needle and the damage done. Enough damage was done by kissing you on the head. awk.
are you sure that it's not as great as they think it is?
@YouCanCallMeArissa - yes it is. There are 2 Jewel versions of this song that I'm aware of (maybe 3). One of them (the Billboard version) is awful. @ItsTiedToAStick your joking right? right? your can't be that rude right?
Don't go teaching her to sing about shooting dope!
Zzzzzzzzzzzz....................
wonderful but a bit out of sync x
neil young sounds better but this is still good
Fuck me. How had I never heard this before now?
