The crossing bell is more for switching operations and slow speed movements as far as when it is most effective. It also serves as a back up warning device in the event that the horn fails during a trip. There are also situations where the horn can't be used. this is where the bell comes in still providing a warning.
American train regulations require that the bell be sounded before a locomotive begins to move. In congested areas, like yards, that have no public crossing, the bell is to be used at all times since the horn is not normally sounded. The bell is also used when approaching an area where there are likely to be members of the public or other employees around the tracks, like stations or industrial spurs.
@Acela150Kid Mirrors are actually manually activated. There is a switch inside the cabs for them to open and close. Sometimes they forget to closed them and that is why they are some that are broken.
Nice catches! In June 2013 me and my took the Acela train #2160 from BWI Airport to Providence, RI to see my Grandma. My Grandma lives in Pawcatuck, CT near the Westerly station. I used to take Amtrak train #174 from BWI to Westerly but, now I ride the Acela but, both rides are fun! Anyway, nice work on the video and BWI is my favorite station on the MARC Penn Line and the Northeast Corridor along with Westerly.:)
Last year I took the Acela from DC to NY wow it was awesome , didn't get up to top speed like it does in Cnn, it did get up to 135 mph(according to my phone gps) and it was smooth.......
The fun thing about the type of stations is that in Belgium it is Mainstream. 2 middle tracks for the high speed an 2 outer tracks for local trains and freight. The bell is something that I don't get. You here the train coming, and if it is necessary the train driver will hit the horn. But every country has his systems and his charms.
@Acela150Kid I said we never had any problem filming at any other stations and he said "ok let the Amtrak police come and arrest you" and he left. We never had any problems the remaining 2 hours we where there.
@jpaufsc Yes. It's a retractable mirror. There's two on each PC. One on each side. Just basically so the engineer can see the door indicator lights and other factors at station stops. It automatically folds in at I think 2 MPH. If not then it's 5 MPH.
say how about hireing a helivopter make a real good view of the acela flying along the tracks on the east corridor some real good acela advenchure from the air

@SuperStarRendon Thanks. This was the Saturday before we left for home. We took NER train 88 north to NYC then Lake Shore Limited 49 back to Buffalo.
It adds to the safety of trains by allowing for a safety alert without excessive noise in certain situations.

This video makes me think of the first time I saw an Acela, when I was little. I wanted to get on it when my dad took me to the BWI Station

Nice catches! Cool how the engineer wanted to know your youtube channel. I hope he'll see this.
@Acela150Kid I see thanks for the info. For the life of me I couldn't think of what it was.

That would be a neat DVD idea.
@GintaPPE1000 Thanks! I'm glad you like my videos!
Thank you for the information.
As I can see, both systems are good systems.
You've definatly got my subscription! I've only seen three of your vids but they're all going on the favorites list!
@jpaufsc It's sad that us railfans have to deal with this nonsense nowadays! But overall a great video!
It's the run through track for trains that don't stop at this station.
🤓That WAS FUN !! & Thankyou For Sharing 🖖✌
Glad you enjoyed!

That is an interesting view! 03:40
Ahh I get ya. All Amtrak platforms are considered public property with the exception of some large stations.
Is the middle track like a by pass track or another mainline?? Curious if anyone knows that one??
Not long at all. I was just sitting on the bench waiting and as soon as I start to film, he runs over and tells me I can't.
in amrak-ese, "heritage"means old gear from the predecessor railroads
Great video. Is this before going back home? If you took your train back home on Sunday we caught it at Metuchen Station
Thanks! I appreciate it!!!
Yes. Just like the "heritage diners"
@Acela150Kid Yeah it's unfortunate. and thanks. By the way, do you know what that little flip out panel is at 2:00 in the video?
Great videos!
Thanks!
Whats the high pitch screeching nosie when train in motion ??? The contact between the rail or the wire
@buddysai1 No this is BWI Airport in Maryland.
Awesome video!
Great video.
nice train, nice video :)
He wasn't mad about me filming the people. He was angry that I was filming in general.
is this trenton? do u have any videos from edison? Cuz I live there :]
It's ok to film the trains, railfans do it all the time. You just can't film ppl without ther permission. That's the grey area.
No. He suggested that we should but we didn't.
Wait!!!! what he mean you can't film
Where did the take place?
dude how long were you filming befor that guy came and told you couldn't?????
Was that guy really hassling you for a film permit? Geez.
@Trainlover4ever2006 Thanks.
***** At 4:34 what was the man asking you about? Something about a filming permit?
Crazy
@aocruiser Thanks!
The air brakes being applied
Did that guy really made you leave.?
LOL!!! Hey do you have permission to film?? These people have no respect for railfans.. What did you say to the guy to get him off you??
That's cool I was just speaking in general. The guy was wrong unless there is a specific policy for that station which I doubt.
True
@disturbed1954 Thanks!
Why do American trains have bells
@kenjr29mfl Thanks.
Yeah even though platforms like this are public property.
men there but not seen that
Yeah it's a shame...
Don't listen to him, he's full of shit.
Totally not looking exactly like the TGV... Sweet irony, They don't want TGV but copy it anyway
Tenshi Mio it made my same company and tgv and Acela are about same heigjt
It's basically a TGV built for American standards, and Alstom made the power cars, so it isn't weird at all that they look like the TGV
