- Andre Watts plays the Grandes Études de Paganini S.141 by Franz Liszt as part of an all Liszt recital given in Tokyo on 11/22/1988.
Restored by R. B. Prior.
Andre Watts played an all Liszt recital in Ann Arbor, Michigan around this same time to an overfilled Hill Auditorium. As he finished the final Paganini Etude, the place erupted into absolute pandemonium. I'll never forget it.
hard to control yourself in pieces that require a lot of extraordinary technical and musical ingenuity on the performers part and Watts does wonder in making these sound and look the way they are supposed to , unbelieveable performances , he does not play it safe and my hats off to him
check out his execution flawless you go brother watts
that's the face of somebody who's enjoying what he does and doesn't give a ... of what people think! XD
Rmn Crz You have shamed me into removing my ignorant comment!
thanks for bringing me back to listen again to these outstanding performances , Watt's is outstanding
Exquisitely gorgeous in tone and expression
Been looking for this for years. Love the subtle slow down around 2:40. Watts does these Etudes better than anyone.
Andre Watts è il migliiore interprete degli "Studi da Paganini" di Liszt
Superb!! Brings back memories of Watts and Mehta in Mumbai in 1967
the most musical performance of this piece
@steveaulie Hey Steve, I was at that concert, too. I'll never forget how the audience seemed to rise and fall with the cresc / diminuendo on the two-hand d# trill - it was breathtaking. Nor will I forget the furor over the negative review Watts got the next day - I think the reviewer lost his job over that one - do you recall his name?
The wife of one of my UMich profs bootlegged a cassette recording. Unfortunately the tape quality has degraded past repair.
Sorry , just listened to Kissin's rushed and safe performance and Watt's performance leaves Kissin's far behind, I get feeling , the only one upon listening to Kissin's performance , that he doesn't feel the music at all and doesn't let himself go the way Watt's clearly does and the way the music demands ...
Sublime. grandioso
Brilliant!!!
Fabuloso.
Damn he's aggressive... pulverize those bass strings~!
He and Jeopardy whiz kid could go for father and son, the resemblance and unusual personalities being so similar, both geniuses at what they're doing.
The best parts the camera man only showed his face... I sure would have like to talked to guy.
but I'd much rather enjoy Andre Watt's non-safe performance , with feeling
In the piano program at my university we call him Dr. Dre :D
epic scowl @ 0:30
Are you studying at IU?
WSU :D
his face doe
......and I'm sure you can play this just sooo much better.
im so sorry to say but . . . Kissin wipes this guy clean off the board with his interpretation of No.2. if you want to hear what Liszt sounded like, search Evgeny Kissin Liszt Etude. theres proof.
