  • This video from oorail.com looks at a power issue we ran into on the layout, it shows how we troubleshooted the issue with both the Train-Tech Track Tester as well as a Bachmann Class 03 shunter. The problem turned out to be a faulty set of fishplates which moved slightly when heavier locos moved over them. We fixed the problem by adding additional dropper wires to the loop.

Intermittent power issues that developed on an HO layout over time, even after servicing / joint replacement work, was one of the main reasons I decided to stop investing in it any further. Another, much older friend developed similar issues and a portion of his layout was always troubled despite soldering and a variety of other fixes that helped temporarily. It seems like a more definitive connection system that is less subject to fatigue, or other solutions that are highly durable under all conditions, need to be found.

WHERE DID YOU GET THAT. My layout keeps having a shortage and my locomotives can’t run smoothly

Its a train-tech track tester. The product code is TT1. I think I bought mine off Hattons, looks like they have about 5 in stock right now at around 6 quid..

Please tell me what is fish plate? Thanks.

Certainly. A fish plate or rail joiner is used to connect the rails together. You use one for each rail. They come in metal (for conducting electricity) and plastic (for insulating). They are flat on the bottom and partially open on the top in the shape of the bottom of the rail. You typically slide one about half way on each rail on the track you are connecting to, then slide the track you are connecting to it into those. Typically you want the fish plates to be about 50/50 on each rail. You don't solder them as you want track to have the ability to expand and contract. However you may want to use a pliers to tighten the connection to the track if they are loose. First off, take a deep breath, all this stuff is very fixable. The best approach is to not panic and take a systematic approach of ruling things out. To help you out, I'm going to need some additional information. Hornby recently launched TT:120 scale, is your new Hornby layout OO scale or TT:120 scale? Are you using DC or DCC? Can you explain in more detail how it is malfunctioning? Trains stopping at a certain point? Slowing down? Based on your comments, I'm assuming its partially working and the track is very clean. Do you have a small loco you can test with like a diesel shunter? A small loco like a diesel shunter typically has only 4 wheels with pickups on those wheels, so its easy to check the wheels are clean and the pickups are making contact properly. So if you still have the same problem, you know its not due to dirty track, wheels or pickups. If you only have one power connection to your track, I would start there, make sure its not loose and its working properly. A good way to test this is to push down on the track near where the power is connected, if the loco starts to move again, thats probably where you need to look. Sometimes its the power connection, sometimes its something simple like the fishplates (rail joiners) connecting the power track to the rest of the track. If that doesn't help, try pushing down on the rails (thumb, apply some pressure to both rails) where the fishplates are on the piece of track thats causing you a problem, and see if there is any movement. If you have a multimeter with a continuity tester (beep), you can put it on a rail, either side of the fish plate and see if thats the problem, repeat this for each rail and each joint on the problematic track. Another option is to use the track testing tool, which you can purchase from most model railway shops, although Gaugemaster recently bought Train Tech, so they maybe branded under Gaugemaster now. Let me know if any of that helps you, if you have other information, feel free to comment below and I'll see if I can give you more targeted advice for your problem.

I'm not a fan of UK railroading and terms as I'm in America. Still, its nice to see something different.
