Thanks, I had a GP-40 as a kid that I really enjoyed playing with. Unfortunately it failed after a few years of being used. It sat for nearly 10 years, and today I decided to take it apart. One of the solder joints on the wheels broke off, so I resoldered it and it came right back to life! such a simple issue, fixed in less than 15 minutes. Unfortunately I no longer have a layout like I did back then, but knowing that the "toy" I had as a child works once again made my day. Thanks.
Very useful video! I have a Bachmann GP40-2 locomotive in BNSF livery, road number 3012. I purchased it a year ago as an add-on to the Bachmann 'Rail Chief' set I bought a couple of years ago. It had been running very noisy lately with a lot of 'gear whine' and seemed to be struggling. Found this video and found out how to remove the body shell which allowed me to put some light oil on the worm gears..problem solved. Thanks!
"Take it easy, Manny. They know what they're doin'." -Runaway Train. I just watched that movie for the first time in 30+ years. Some quotes apply to model railroading. We just assume the factory always has quality control. Also, "Why that one, Manny?" ... "Because I want it!" ...sums up why our collections look the way they do. It's like the loco I'm working on now. Got it mid-1990s for $5 because I wanted it, but it's been in a box for 20yrs. Today I opened the gear box, dust free, but the grease was mostly globbed all over one cog and smeared over the inner gear box wall. That was the hobby shop's application circa 1997. So it'll get lightly regreased, get the carbon deposits off the wheels, and stop the brushes from sparking the commutator and this thing should be good to go for something that might be 40-45yrs old.
I gots me a snow day from work today....saaaaweet (hey ,even an old 58 year old guy gets excited about snow days, huge winter storm here in Manitoba....crazy stuff) but I get to work on the layout all weekend and into Thanksgiving (turkey and trains brother ,hard to beat) But yah brother man ,as you know I model N scale and you would be surprised how many new locos I unpack and the amount of oil dripping off the trucks (Exxon Valdez style) Atlas and KATO can be pretty bad, others as well.I think it may be a QC thing, as I have bought new locos only to notice the trucks put on backwards from the factory ,2 times on Atlas products....sheesh !! If you don`t have a guy watching over the workers ,things can go sideways pretty quickly, pretty much why Rapido has complete control over their manufacturing, because of stuff like this. Another fine show SMT......always a pleasure to watch !! Back to my trains. Paul T in snowy, windy, icy, Wpg.(I could use a nice haircut myself)
It's a nice little set, I had many hours of fun with mine. I was a little shocked to see this though, especially since this loco has run really well over the years.
@@SMTMainline hello smt. I have this exact locomotive but it's a newer model? But it's giving me a good service life and now the motor is overheating BADLY and shorts out Do I need a new motor or find a new locomotive?

Yeah Bachmann can be alittle off with their lubication problems and other things but i really like bachmann. I believe it happened to my Prairie 2-6-2 steam engine lot of grease on the gears. It’s ridiculous!
I got same set 2 xmas ago. Love it. The look in my eyes was crazy in disbelief. But am thinking about putting digitrax decoder in it to go with my roco gp40 csx dcc unit. But who knows might get chip on shoulder and do something crazy different.
Excellent video! I have 2 small Bachmann switchers 44 ton and 45 ton. I wish Atlas or Walthers made these. The 45 ton needed the CV54=0 trick to tune the settings. Still not absolutely smooth, but much better. I have LokSound 5 micro and keep alive capacitor on each. Still my best running locos are my Atlas Gold and Walthers Proto units.
I have 10 Bachmann GP40s all in original condition but the time has come for rebuild to GP40-3 amd all will get cab upgrades and the mech will be overhauled.
SMT - I can understand not placing a lubricant on teeth of plastic gears; they may be made out of a " self - lubricating " plastic. The hair probably came from Nerf Cat; make sure you brush him occasionally. Did you also oil the motor shaft bearings & clean the copper strips that contact the back side of the wheels?
My wife got me the rail cheif set a few years ago for my birthday i will never part with it runs pretty good it is soon to be time for some maintenance on it
Very awesome Harrison And I’m just curious do you want me to pay for the shipping to get my locomotive back and you always do an awesome job and have an awesome day
How much does Bachmann charge to have them lubricate and do basic maintenance on a non-DCC GP-40 DC diesel locomotive? Does anyone know? It looks like on their web page that the cost would be $35, which seems a little high to me. It's still probably better to have them do the lubrication and maintenance on my locomotive rather than do it myself and risk breaking a $150 train engine.
I have the same bachmann locomotive and for me it works but only the light is on and it's like kinda moving but I think it's the oil that I need to change

Harrison, your videos are looking more professional with different shots to break it up. Impressed at how you take them apart and get them back together in one piece. Run it around the layout a few times until it warms up and works the new oil and grease into the moving parts. What do you think is causing the odd whining sound, the motor? 👍👍👍
Thanks David. I'm not entirely why the motors make that whining noise, but I'd suspect it would have something to do with how the motor is surrounded in metal.

Clicking is likely from a cracked gear. The smell would be from the motor, don't run it until you fix the issue or you might burn it out.
