- In this video I attempt to tackle several different subjects....
1. The Sony BVM 20F1U
2. Sync On Green
3. The Extron Matrix Switcher
4. The Ultra HDMI Review
5. The HIDEF NES Review
6. 480I Resolution VS 240P
7. Integer Scaling
8. Sync Combining
2017 and still the undisputed guru of retro-gaming video solutions! I can't even imagine how much work went into this channel! Mind blown. Thank you!
[Coury] whew this is quite the epic! Can't wait to sit down and take the full thing in during one sitting.
+My Life in Gaming I think your 20L5 can do sync on green 480p. Not sure but I am taking a wild guess it does!
Thank you so much for making this video. You are the RGB Grandmaster who has probably one of the most expensive rgb retro console setup on this planet. Total Nerdgasm by the power of four.
I just watched this video again after 2 months...All I can say is you know your stuff man and i learn from you heaps..
Plus your also the reason why PVMs/BVMs/XM29 etc are now costing $$$ LOL - everyone wants them
I would also like to thank Coury from "My Life In Gaming" for helping me get my vocals a bit better. Although I am still not as good as them!
+phonedork [Coury] Happy to help! Now if only I could get my delivery as good and natural sounding as yours!
+phonedork I highly recommend the Blue Snowball for a good cheap quality USB mic. I use that and the Blue Yeti, but the Yeti is 3x the price, and is more sensitive to vibration and ambient sound.
+phonedork Good to see you posting again - it's been a bit since your last video (I know, it takes time to make videos). Have you had a chance to use the 14F1U? This is one of the 2 monitors that I have, I'm wondering what, aside from size, would be the difference (there's a line count difference that might be made up by smaller size). Also, aside from raw tech specs, what are your thoughts on what different monitor types are "worth"? Example: I'm seeing prices for the high def PVMs that are more than the price I paid for 2 SD monitors...
EDIT - just a quick note, my problem with 480i content on a PVM/BVM setup is that the 'vibration' from the interlacing is very pronounced (example: Gradius IV's weapon selection bar).
I have a similar bvm as the one you should in this episode and currently I'm having a nightmare as to what speakers to buy for it.
I really REALLY do care that much for audio quality man it's just that important as is video in my humble opinion.
William Marston My answer may not be what you're looking for, but just to tell you my setup, I have a small 2 channel receiver and OK speakers. Depends on what your sources are. I think you could go with a good 2 or 2.1 channel setup for anything 32bit/CD and earlier, as there wasn't much surround support before that, but Xbox Original and up supports optical out, so that gets complicated quickly.
Another awesome video man! You're a god among retro gaming men.
This is a high quality content video. cant imagined all the hard work. thank you sir! still bvm and pvm are the way to go.
You and My Life In Gaming know your stuff. Damn. LOL loving these videos, so much info it makes me salivate.
Holy crap dude there is so much content in this video. Had to have taken forever to make. A great reference to educate my buddies and show them the joy of a CRT. Thanks partner!
Awesome and very detailed video! Time went by pretty fast when I watched this
Once again you have done a great job at filling a video with tons of useful information and still managed to entertain at the same time. Thank you for your work. It is appreciated.
Thank you for watching and seeing the work that I put in my videos.
You are truly god level when it comes to this stuff, great video
I wholeheartedly agree with your point regarding how scanlines are just as important on 3D graphics as they are on 2D. Well motivated and great video in general.
Oh my god, I barely understand all you are talking about, but seriously, what a great work...
I’m rewatching this for the 15th time & I still don’t understand everything 😂
I think you are handling the retro gaming at some GOD level
I've lost count of the amount of times I keep going back to this video, Phonedork! I've been scaling my 240p content to a windowed 960p with scanlines from the SLG 3000.
Impressive cabling job right there phonedork.
Dude, top notch videos man. I never thought I would find myself nostalgic for CRTsor the like... Alas, here I am!
Thanks man! Keep up the great work!!!
This was an EPIC video man, the time that you put into your videos really shows and the quality is absolutely top notch.
+Retro Game Players Thanks you!
God I miss Phonedork videos
Where has he gone??
You have noooooooo idea how much i miss him too brother
Same here
Great video! I usually end up watching your videos 2 or 3 times because you pack so much stuff into them that I miss the first time around, which is not a bad thing btw. This was definitely worth the wait! :D
This definitely deserves a sub. Thanks for the comprehensive, entertaining, and quality content!
Great video! Nice example of how scanlines do justice even for PS1 games that render with polygons. Scanlines rock but more than anything else I enjoy the CRT's because they have absolutely no motion blur. That will always be the downside to LCD's in my opinion.
I thought I understood how to get the best picture until I watched this. Great video, I need to research more.
Another great video Phonedork! Keep up the good work! Cheers!
Wow 1 minute of watching and I subbed, video specs, cables management, racks!!! How do you now have more subs? Edit: HOT DAMN this guy has jokes and production quality
Great and PRO review, detailed and well presented. Just a off topic note: your voice tone is similar to John Di Maggio's one (he is the voice actor of Joker in Batman Under the Red Hood) ! Cheers, M!
Hey dork! I just bought myself a 20m2du! Can't wait to see what awesomeness comes from it! It's a 600 line 20 incher but I looked at videos of it and it seems pretty sharp. I'm so excited!
You're the man phonedork, I have the BVM-20E1U HR and it's awesome for 240p and 480i content.
Fantastic video, completely amazed on how good it is
You had me at the intro music. Sparkster. Win.
Awesome music!
I'm a Framemeister junkie but man these videos are fucking awesome! It's really interesting to see how the consoles look natively from TVs of the time.
I want to see how the scanline "filter" makes an anti-aliasing look, but I find it a bit hard to see. I think that the scanlines sort of make an illusion to look softer
Helloz World That's about half right. Scanlines make details less visible, but they also cover up many visual flaws. This does cause a slightly softer image, but a cleaner one. Personally, I prefer for 2D games to be as sharp as possible without scanlines. I prefer N64 and PS1 3D games to be represented slightly differently, but again, without scanlines. It's all opinion.
***** I personally prefer no scanlines, but I love what scanlines do with the PS1's famous dithering issues.
Helloz World Same. Scanlines work best for 240p 3D games.
You really take the time to put some great videos together. Seriously impressive.
Fantastic video and awesome channel! Think I've found a hidden gem here kkkkk
Another great video. I wish I could get hold of a BVM over here. The only ones I find are equivalent to $1500+ when they have 20,000 hours on them.
To your comments about integer scaling on the NES, integer scaling does not have to use a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio. (PAR)
Integer scaling only means that each axis is scaled by a whole number.
The NES renders a 256x240 resolution with non-square pixels.
So if you use 5x4 integer scaling, you get 256*5 = 1280 by 240*4 = 960.
1280x960 is a pixel-perfect 4:3 image.
If you're not seeing perfect circles with 5x4 integer scaling, the sprite was drawn to be viewed at 1:1 PAR, and not as a 4:3 image - you would have the same issue on a CRT as well.
Unfortunately a lot of games seem to mix sprites which were drawn to either be viewed at 1:1 PAR or at 4:3 - I guess they were drawn by different artists.
I tend to go with the 4:3 image, since that's how they would have been viewed on a CRT anyway.
One of the biggest advantages that a CRT has is that it handles what is effectively non-integer scaling without any of the flickering artifacts that are seen on a fixed-pixel display.
So for systems like the SNES which renders 256x224, you can easily get a perfect 4:3 image on a CRT.
On a 1080p flat panel with integer scaling, your options are limited to either 4x4 which results in an image that is 14% too narrow, or 5x4 which ends up being 7% too wide.
If overscan is not a problem for the game you're trying to play, 6x5 is only 3% off a true 4:3 image.
If you want the correct aspect ratio and perfect integer scaling, the only solution is throwing more resolution at the problem.
7x6 (1792x1344) is the first resolution which is both a perfect integer scale, and a perfect 4:3 image for the SNES. This works quite well on a 1440p monitor.
That's a lot better than the Genesis, which requires 14x15 scaling - 4480x3360!
That said, it is now possible to do really nice non-integer horizontal scaling in an emulator.
The "pixellate" shader in RetroArch applies anti-aliasing at non-integer scales, so you don't get the typical distortions or whole pixels flickering on and off when the screen scrolls.
It softens the image a little, but the end result is pretty good if you care about having the right aspect ratio.
5x4 Integer: abload.de/img/54-integerjok10.png
4:3 Pixellate: abload.de/img/43-pixellate12jw0.png
I agree with you about the scanlines too.
If the scanlines are not at least as thick as the pixels - as you would see on a BVM - then I don't think there's much point to them.
3 image pixels and 1px scanlines just looks like you drew lines over the image, it doesn't have the "anti-aliasing" effect that true scanlines do.
PS1 games absolutely need this.
It always surprises me just how much better the PS1's 3D games or FMVs look with proper scanlines over the image.
P.S. One of the things that a lot of people don't seem to realize is that, if you're drawing black scanlines on the image, you're literally throwing away half the brightness.
The solution for that is not to apply gamma correction, which messes up the colors, the solution is to turn up the brightness of your display by 2x. (or more)
Of course that only works if you're not already running your display at or near its maximum brightness.
You know you made it in life when Coury or TRY4 from MyLifeInGaming pays a visit in the comment section
Awesome video. Very helpful and informative.
God damn I love that double dragon tune!
I've been hooked on it since the original gameboy version back in the day.
Great video, I want one of these!
phonedork you are a blessing to this world
Excellent information, and entertaining as always. I like how you string together different topics and tie everything together. You must put a shitload of work into these videos!
+shredguitarkev Its very hard! As a matter of fact I was getting overwhelmed by all the shit I wanted to cover
this channel is gold, where have you disappeared man !!!
Worth noting the impact and behavior for folks using an 'Analogue NT' (Uses HiDef Nes)- you cleared alot of stuff up. And I'm scratching my head too on the 4.5 / 5 scaling matter. Was sticking to 720P which it handles much better than 1080. Hadn't known there was additional lag. Hopefully a firmware update will address Excellent vid..p.s. you gave Taylor Lautner (Rediculous Six) a run for his $$ !!
I have ur setup and it is godlike. People can't understand how good the monitor is unless they actually see it. It's like hdr on old content.
Love the intro music! General Chaos! theme
Lesser known fact about analog video. Horizontal resolution is not limited to 640 pixels. Many devices support a 720 or 704 pixel mode, and the Amiga ECS and AGA chipsets can generate a mode that is 1280 pixels wide (not counting overscan) in either 240p or 480i, which would probably look really good on that BVM
LocalH I just so happen to be getting into the Amiga scene with the MIST. You are right! I have been running higher vertical resolutions than even 720.
phonedork cool. I’ve actually watched this video numerous times, I like your presentation, and you have some of the absolute highest quality off-screen CRT footage on RUclips
Dude please make more retro gaming videos, it’s been 8 years.
8 years is a very long time.
Holy crap! That image could never look the same digital!
I've started to play retro games via emulation with RGB analog video in to a widescreen CRT and the results are stunning, CRT's LOVE down sampling so much and playing PSOne and N64 games at 480i with 3x down sampling applied looks stunning......as do DC, GC and PS2 games.
Dunno, man. 480i is hard to swallow pill, esp on high TVL monitors, where the shimmer is crazy and scanlines just "jump" and give me headache in 10 mins. I bought small "kitchen tv" trinitron(kv 14 model or smth like) to use with my 480i consoles as it's hides interlacing problems due to lower tvl and screen size than my pvm and vga crt(jvc 17 inch pvm and lg flatron f920p 20 inch) and even ps2 with it's crappy video out now looks pretty good and being euro i have rgb inputs even on kitchen tv's, but i still hate 480i :)
I got an Analogue NT with integrated HiDef NES; if you pass the hdmi through your XRGB Mini, you can enable Zoom and get a true 5x vertical scale. That being said it may add some lag but its not noticeable for me, personally.
According to Kevtris on his forums, the FPGA used in the hidef nes isn't powerful enough to do 5x vertical scale unfortunately. Would require a whole new design and it sounds like he's kind of sick of working on this.
Feel free to chime in Kevtris!
Great video, see you got yourself finally a extron matrix switcher, the 1 thing that combines it all, except audio, hate those plugs too!! Still don't know how i feel about playing old consoles on modern TVs, when my PVM/BVM dies i will look for new ways, until then OLD SCHOOL ALL THE WAY!! BuBBa you crazy F#ck, you rule! :-)
Great as always.
Curse the pal region and it's lack of RGB monitors!
awesome video must have taken ages. thanks for the work. beautiful. born in 1984, i probably grew up on the same shit you did.
localbroadcast he's like 44yrs old
Great video! Thanks for making it in Full HD! :)
It's am hard to do 1080p when your computer is a old 2009 IMac. It would have been much easier had I got a new computer
Just learned today that my Dell Ultrascan P991 vga monitor *natively* supports Sync on Green. Definitely gonna be experimenting with native 480p PS2 games and forcing resolutions with GSM.
best retro knowledge by far. thank you sir.
I just wanted to say big thumbs up from me in regards to the everdrive and clone system comments. I myself use these types of carts for my famicom and super nintendo and you're right, it is the same fucking thing! Playing original carts on clone systems, now that's a big fat nope.
Can't wait to get the Ultra HDMI. I already have a modder trying to get his hands on it as they become available.
This video was incredibly useful.
So much info, gonna have to watch it a few times for it all to click. Tho I would love to see a video on ways to hook up alot of systems to one tv. So many things to pick from.
That hour went by pretty fast. Thanks for the vid!
this video is a masterpiece, love it... now if only I could get my RGB mini setting nice... but thats only for recording, I play on a Sony PVM 20M2MDU and I have the output going to my Mini.
Always love your vids!
My boy phonedork is at it again! Great vid man
Good call on the Extron Matrixes. They're pro-grade and versatile as fuck. Only thing is : you need to either modify your console SCART cables to 5 BNC connectors, or get your cable provider to do it for you. I wish i did just that when I bought all my console RGB cables -_- Now it's too late, I'm not re-buying RGB cables for all my consoles!
Extron gear in general is a blessing for retrogamers. My Extron RGB interface acts as a sync combiner, a brightness/contrast/horizontal position/vertical position adjuster, and it even let's me transform 480i signals into 240p ones, for when I want to play ps2 compilations of older games with scanlines, and the such. It also allows me to use the ps2's 480p SOG signal through scart without a sweat.
On 480i : I also like it on a professional CRT. I like to watch movies and anime on a 480i PVM once in a while, I actually like the flicker, and the image is sharp as hell. But what I don't like, though, is when there are charachters or object that move fast (or a fast camera panning), then you get combing artifacts, and those look pretty nasty IMO. But at least in movies you don't get an awful lot of them.
Speaking of CRTs : did you think that the 20F1U was thighter than the D24E1WU for 240p stuff?
BTW, that's a nice way to handle cable mangment, with the AV rack and all. Keeps everything tidy. Going the route of BNC connectors with RGB sure makes for a lot of fucking wires
+FinalBaton Thanks buddy! Yea I love the Extron matrix switcher.... Except for its size. The Extron RGB is something I can live without as I dont really need it unless I want VGA. I can do sync on green with no issues without it.
phonedork yeah I don't need an Extron RGB either for sync combining and SOG, the NEC handles all of that perfectly fine.
Only thing it adds to my setup is the ability to transform 480i signals into 240p ones. This is how I play the Street Fighter Alpha series (the "Street Fighter Alpha collection on PS") and Super Street Fighter Turbo II (Dreamcast) with scanlines
Oh and the "level" and "peak" dials are pretty handy. That's a nice bonus.
FinalBaton what extron model do you have?
+AppleClassicGamer I have the Extron 580xi. But there are a couple of other Extron RGB interfaces that can pull off the "240p trick" on CRTs. I suggest you check out the hardware sub forum at shmups(dot)system11(dot)org, there's a thread that identifies the compatible model. Worst case just ask yourself in there.
FinalBaton what model would you recommend for me? I've got a pvm 14m2mdu and a pvm 1354q
Fellow genius.. I commend you and your skills.
Way ahead if you're time awesome videos!
In an interview, Kevtris was asked why he did not include a 5x vertical integer, in the High Def NES kit. He said that he tried, but the NES did not have enough memory to execute it.
Super informative yet entertaining. FYI, I read that the HI Def NES is not capable of 5x scaling not because of other features on the chip but from lack of ram. Apparently adding more would put it in a different price point but maybe one should be offered for video enthusiasts anyways.
This is a great video man, keep it up!
+Leonx3 Thanks buddy!
Incredibly informative, thank you!
Great video. Just getting back into retrogaming after finding some of my old consoles in storage. MLiG, retroRGB and your channel have provided a lot of info. Btw, what is the song that plays from 1:37 to 3:00? Reminds me a bit of storm eagle from megaman x but not quite. Thanks and hope to see more soon.
As someone who’s played through Mega man X 1-7, I can confirm it isn’t from those games lol. I’m also still trying to figure out what song it is
I love your videos man, you're into what I am in to. Retro games are great but all the tech and shit that goes into it is what keeps me going in terms of interest. And Everdrives are great, let'em boo. Too many PVM's and Trinitrons to buy to be bothered with $500 carts.
what a hell was that?!!!!!!!!!! this youtube video is just AMAZING, both WHAT and HOW, bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Ruslan Pseunok Thank you Ruslan!!!
Really miss your videos man, hope you come back with them soon!
Damn this video is impressive. I must admit I just romance the idea of a PVM/BVM and satisfied with my retroarch crt shader for now. N64 at native res + CRT-Pi looks to me exactly like a hdmi N64 with deblur and scanlines
Excellent video as usual! I also have a HiDef NES due to the lag on the XRGB. I seem to only have lag issues with the NES on the XRGB and none of the 16 bit systems or higher. Have you experienced that too?
+KWKBOX Yea.... NES has some of the most demonic platform games ever made. So even the slightest lag can render games unplayable. I really dont like the XRGB mini that much anymore except for recording. I think a HDMI mod on all systems is the only way to go. I dont play enough on the XRGB Mini to say 16 bit consoles have less lag then the 8 bit NES.
Your videos have a great quality always! I am going you enjoy this for sure :-)
Thank you! Your arcade videos are awesome too! So jealous!!!
I hope you get a BVM 32" (or PVM 32") and cover that one of these days.
Finally got a BVM-20F1E for €50 today Craig! :D. 'Sweet rack you've got there'. Looking to build a rack like you for my Extron etc, it's a great idea. Where did you source the rackmount power strips with outlets on rear? All of the ones I can find online have the sockets on the front which isn't ideal.
I purchased everything on ebay. I believe its just a small 19 inch rack. Google search outlets for 19 inch rack
Hi Phonedork new subscriber love your retro gaming videos. I wondered if you wouldn’t mind sharing your professional opinion of pairing a sony kv-40xbr800 with an analogue nt mini? I really want a bvm or even a pvm but all I have found are north of $1k I have a line on an this 40” 4:3 sony and my hope is to use it with an analogue nt mini but I can’t seem to find if the unit will process 15khz signals nor if it will basically just be like using my nt mini with my sony projector hw40es.
The 20F1U really is a terrific monitor. I was lucky enough to get one off ebay. It arrived in one piece with less 1,000 hours of usage. The only real problem I have with it is the geometry. I'm curious as to how the geometry is on your monitor. Also, would you able to tell me what the proper scale for the picture height and width would be? I currently have mine set at 110 for width and 130 for height.
There is not one setting for all unfortunately. Even the direction your monitor is facing can cause bends from the earths magnetism. I just use the 240p test suite and use the grid to calibrate geometry. Then go to linearity to check my circles. Going back and fourth correcting each until I either find a happy medium or a near perfect setting for both. I prefer the sega Genesis version. Because normally what works with it works with all. Unless you want a perfect setting for each. I honestly like a little overscan though.
I’d recommend watching retro tech’s channel, but I’m not sure if he does talk about geometry for this BVM in particular
Can you do a video showing off your Extron Matrix Switcher? How many BNC to Scart Sync strip cables you have? Does the sync combiner give you 480p for x-box 360, is the quality better than Scart RGB? Does the extron SW AV series get rid of that annoying high pitch buzzing sound in the audio? Sorry for all the questions, been following your CRT setups for a while.
Yeah I been wanting to rgb mod my n64 for a while now but I think i might stick with s-video for a little while longer. At least until they give us a de-blur option for the rgb mod.
I love your videos man. I would love to see or hear your thoughts about the OSSC if you had a chance to use one yet.
If I ever came over to play Mario Kart 64, I'd LOVE to play it on that Sony BVM20F1U. LOL
@PhoneDork
Of the beautiful CRT's you're using, which has been your favorite? Is there a big step up from the PVM-20M2MDU to the Sony BVM-D20F1U?
I've a Victor WonderMega and a JVC X'Eye with Scart and would like to connect
I think if I want large screen gaming on retro consoles I shall hold out for that holy grail find of a NEC XM37 plus - here's to dreaming...
At the resale price some people are charging for BVMs these days, I can't help but feel it isn't worth the uptick in quality when a Sony PVM 20L5 is usually priced at $1000 less and it will accept up to a 1080i 60fps signal. There's also the fact that for the same price you can just hold out and wait for an A or D variant of the BVM20F1U and get greater than standard definition inputs.
Now if you can snag one of these things for less than $400 (this is my personal cut off for anything that will only do SD resolutions) in great working order, I'd pounce on it.
At some point you have to ask yourself though, am I willing to spend tons of cash on an old CRT (talking $2000+ here as these things are going up in price every day and cost a ton everywhere outside of the West Coast of the USA), or should I just get an XRGB mini, an Elgato HD60 Pro, and one of the new 1080p DELL monitors and just fake everything else for way less money?
Dumb question. On the sony pvm's with external sync bnc input can you use ps1 and n64 scart cables with sync on luma? Do you have the dreamcast and toro? Just trying to look up if I need a sync stripper? I don't think I need it but not 100% sure. All my systems work fine on my xrgb without a stripper and all my cables are from retro console accessories. I was just on a cruise and due to weather we had an excursion cancelled. Just putting the money to good use. I also plan on hooking my pvm up to my supergun and raspberry pi. Supergun wise I have a neo geo mvs and will soon be getting a cps2 with multi (waiting for dead board to show up on ebay). I thought about getting a astro city arcade cabinet but I dont have the room. I made a mame pc with tankstick, lightgun, led buttons and sticks, and beefed up sound. Hard to rig a astro city for widescreen games and I was eyeballing a pi instead to go inside it. Kind of getting a dissembled crt arcade with the pvm, pi, and my two sticks (one happ one sanwa). Just need to preorder that gscartsw lite so I won't have to unplug replug all my devices. Currently using 3 of those 3 way scart switches which are all daisy chained. Going to try arcadeforge's scart2pi adapter to pull a 240p scart picture to the pvm. Retrorgb was saying great things about it. Love your videos. Just wish KC had pvms on craigslist. $300-400 shipping gamble is in my near future.
The Sony BVM-D20F1U supports 240p, 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i resolutions and the Sony BVM-20F1U only supports 240p and 480i. Both monitors look the same but the Sony BVM-D20F1U is the one to get.
I wonder if a 4k edition of the Hi-def NES will be coming out. Picture running a 10x9 scaling for perfect integer scaling and having it be a ratio for the CRT feel. :)
Thanks for the uploads phonedork. If it wasnt for your vid on the pvm 2530 i would of missed out on a great monitor. I almost passed on it because of the weird "computer" rgb port. Got it for free.... Quick question. Do you know if scart switches introduce any input lag? Can't stand that lag man
Scart switches in general do not cause lag. Even daisy chaining monitors dont. But certain ones cause degradation to the signal. I am sure that even the best scart switches have some kind of degradation. But it is too minimal to notice. Only time I see lag is when the signal is introduced to scaling. Perhaps transcoding too. Although I sensed none transcoding to component to a CRT.
cool thanks, I picked up a "Bandridge automatic 5 way" switcher. It works great. Haven't noticed any problems
so much stuff I didn't understand. all these syncs, resolutions, picture quality, hertz , etc. holy moly I better do some research
Thanks for the reviews! I am interested in both the Ultra HDMI and the HiDef NES. I hope they take into consideration some of the scaling/integer/scanlines that you mentioned for a firmware update. As for Gimmick, I think it sounded pretty good. I have experience with playing on an the infiniteneslives cart, which uses the same yamaha chip to reproduce the 5B sounds.
Thank you! I do have a hack of Gimmick that sounds pretty damn good. But I used the normal rom on the video. So what is the infiniteneslives cart?
They offer a flashable cartridge PCB and programmer on their website, including a PCB that support the Sunsoft 5b mapper and expansion audio featured on Gimmick.

Fantastic video, Phonedork. I'm now obsessed with getting RGsB from my Xbox as I find the YPBPR 480p output pretty ugly. Unfortunately my current softmodded Xbox is a 1.6 so I'm shit out of luck - and to think I swapped it for an older model due to the 1.6's superior Scart RGB output. I'll have to track down an old one and softmod it again. The quest continues...
+Das Muel Totally agree with your preference for Wii 480i via Scart over 480p - I also (currently) use scart with my original Xbox (upscaled to 1080p by a Micomsoft XPC-4). The colour/contrast etc is so much better, despite the flickering/artifacts etc. 480p via component from these particular systems is pretty ugly in my opinion. If only they'd put a VGA output (à la Dreamcast) on these systems it sure would have saved us obsessives a hell of a lot of trouble a decade-and-a-half down the line. I reckon I could lasso the moon with all the shit I've got running behind my plasma.
+Das Muel I'm currently looking for a 1.6 model as the RGB scart out of my 1.0 model is abysmal. How would you rank the Xbox video quality of the 1.6 YPbPr and 1.6 RGB scart compared to older models?
+Garbagehead3 I can't speak for the YPbPR output of the older models because I haven't got hold of one yet and I always used RGB Scart back in the day. The Scart output of the 1.6 however is head and shoulders above both of the older models I've used in the past. The colours/contrast etc from the 1.6 are fantastic - it's a little bit on the soft side (due to a pretty aggressive flicker filter I think) but apart from that it's the shit. YPbPR's okay, but half a step down in my opinion (putting to one side the interlaced flickering etc).
Hi:
Hey Man, it's been a while since your last update. Have you seen the OSSC? I'm sure a LOT of people would like to hear about your impressions of it and expert comparison with your SONY BVM. Maybe soon?
Your voice is so freaking awsome...hrhrhr…
Very informative video! I was thinking about picking up one of these kinds of Sony TVs and control unit/matrix switchers for retro gaming once I get a bit more cash, but I don't think I'm knowledgeable enough yet to make an informed decision. Quick question unrelated to the TV itself: Do you have the names of the sound tracks you used in this video? They were all solid choices!
Really informative. Great video.
Hey phonedork, quick question, why do you elect to use an extron switcher (meaning you'll need a scart to BNC breakout cable for every console) vs a SCART switcher such as the 'gscartsw' or the 'hydra' which would only require you to get one breakout cable for the output?
Thanks, btw, learned everything about RGB from here
Awesome vid, phonedork! Quick question about sync on green! You have a PVM 2030, which has sync on green, yes? Just wondering if syncing on green, with a console that can do so, will bump up the resolution of that particular monitor to 480p?? Thanks, man! Keep up the great work!
If your console supports sync on green and 480p resolutions it should be fine. Just remember to turn the external sync off once you activate sync on green
