fuckyuashol yup I do. What’s deceiving with a GoPro is that it makes things look flatter than they are. So when you’re going up a dune and don’t know what’s on the other side it’s safer to slow down. Plus I drive like an old lady most of the time and I think that’s why that motor has lasted as long as it has.
People don’t understand the commitment it takes to drive in the dunes, looks like a good time and a fun run, gotta learn the lines then you can really hammer down. My grandpa had a VW beam buggy so much fun so many memories wish I could go back in time too many SxS in the scenes now a days not a bad thing but I do miss the rail enthusiasts.
Yes Yes!! Super fun and my driving skills are improving every time I go out. My buggy ran great the whole weekend so I was grinning the whole way home!
Seems to me you could go anywhere the SxS goes. Personally, I'd carry a little more RPM, but having never driven a VW, a SxS, or anything in the dunes......maybe I dunno what I'm talking about.
Yup I can go anywhere they go. There's a lot to say about driving skills in the dunes. You don't know whats on the other side of them and sometimes you have shadows that make things sketchy. You're right about the RPM's thing for sure- I baby the car a lot in the first days of the trip to make it last.
Thank you! I'm new to this whole thing and I will be making new videos this month showing the restoration of my buggy. The camera is a Gopro Hero 7 black and I just mount is to my buggy in different places. Thanks for your comment and yes I agree that rails are more safe than SXS's. SXS's have better suspension that my buggy and are more reliable but my buggy is wide so it doesn't want to roll as easy. Money makes things fast so it depends how deep your pockets are!
YLFY they do scream and I love the sound they make. An 1835 can do some amazing things and most VW sand rails are under a thousand pounds. If you drive them hard all the time they don’t last long though.
mats heinstedt yeah we really don't drive it hard. We do most of our driving on dirt with dirt tires, and more than enough horsepower without getting over about 4000 rpm. The only thing bad about it is it has a 110 angle can, which isn't extreme but it has a small dead spot which is just a minor inconvenience. I assume your rail has a 3.88 ratio transaxle?
@@m.behan6 Yes the ring and pinion is a 3.88. Dave Folts built it about 2 years ago and is currently getting rebuilt again by Dave. It has a Rhino aluminum case and weddle gear set. He did a lot of maching for bigger bearings and custom side covers. I popped the reverse gears on the last trip so I'm currently redoing a lot of buggy while the trans is out. My buggy doesn't like choppy sand much- usually gets loaded up and sputters a lot. I has a 2276 but I'm not sure what cam it has. When everything is clean and the sand is smooth it hauls ass!!
mats heinstedt just have a built engine, you can build those vw air cooled engines to make 180 hp, and 200 ft lbs of torque. You will own them in the sand drags.
Damien gomez my buggy has smoked a lot of Rzr’s especially at the sand drags. I ride with guys that have Rzr’s, Can-am’s Subaru’s and a few V8 cars. I do fine most of the time but my car definitely needs more maintenance which usually don’t take long. It’s light and quick but the newer stuff does most everything better. Have you seen Chico’s performance build motors? That dude is amazing and makes VW’s with huge power and torque!!!
Hey could you tell me what kind of shock absorbers you have on and what set up? I’m building my sand rail right now and looking for a better alternative than coil overs . Your reply would be much appreciated
Miguel Lomeli I’m running Fox coil overs. I’m rebuilding the car right now and posted a bunch of pictures on my Instagram page. @matsheinstedt on Instagram.
I ran basic gas shocks on my 1600 4 seater and the rear blew out. Upgrading to coil overs to go with the torsion bars in the rear. Not sure what I’m doing in the front
@@michaelmccarthy4615 well I rebuilt the car when Covid started and my driving has improved over the past season or 2. I put a deeper sump on the new motor and a larger crank pulley to get the fan speed up all for more cooling. I’m still learning every trip and plan on going as long as possible!! Thanks for watching my video!
@@MATSHEINSTEDT look at a stock 1600 in a car. They have special tin all around the cylinders to provide even and complete air flow. This is to avoid hot spots. There are baffles in a stock dog house. Try to retain the factory designed air flow. Larger motors need to remove even more heat. The factory air flow design is very well thought out.
I wasn’t and I wish I could rename the video to just plain old following a random Can Am. Thanks for watching and I have a newer video where I’m going a bit faster. Check it out.
Can am trying to keep up with payments
That’s some funny shit right there!
That is for sure some funny shit!!
That can am is laughing to the bank until that crap tips over. Your good bro, keep those revs up.
Awsome video, love VW cars !
Sounds to me like you keep letting off the gas.

I kept waiting for the "Trying" part. Sounded to me like you could have driven past it at pretty much any point.
Looks like your having fun.

ah the sweet sing of the vw
That just looks like fun

Rails can actually go allot more places than a sXs
On the other side?
More sand.......
Excellent video. May I ask what kind of camera setup you are using? Sandrail is way safer than a sbs and potentially way faster.

Nice
How do you get that tachometer in bottom left corner?
It's a feature on the GoPro. It's a speedometer.
Whoever's driving is the most timid I've ever seen on dunes. Your following so there are no suprises!
Thanks for the tip! I'll try harder next time.
Still surprises lol they make a mistake and you follow, you also pay the price.
We have in germany no dunes😩
No dunes except beaches in upstate NY people here trail ride with them
If you got forest change to some truck tires or beefier ones and you are good to go
Thanks,.. now we own a SUZUKI LJ80
Let me guess, weber or dellorto carbs judging from the whistling when you step on the gas
Platinum Dellorto 45 DRLA you are a winner Sir. They whistle
mats heinstedt yep my dads a Volkswagen fanatic. He runs a set of dellorto 40s on his sandrail. His is only a 1835 though. Still screams

You would be able to catch him if you got it up in the rpm’s
Brett Stinger back then I could catch him but he’s done some mods and now there ain’t no way. They are superior machines from the get go.

There is a guy on Instagram with the same engine as you I think, and he beats can ams, and razors in the sand drags.

mats heinstedt the newer stuff is good not gonna lie, but I prefer something that’s manual, light , and doesn’t roll as easily as the can am or razor

What motor
2276 VW. Oldscool buggy that has been modified with long suspension. It's good but not a good as a Can Am. Mine sounds better though!!!!
@@MATSHEINSTEDT fraction of the cost tho. You could get a 4 seater v8 for less than a can am
Be hard on it these motors like never break
I don't know about that. I broke it- cylinder 3 cracked where it meets the head. I rebuilt it and going out with it in a couple weeks.
VWs need air for cooling. If you lug them too much it reduces the air flow. Keep the RPMs up to keep air flowing.
