    Part 2:
    • How Does a Switching P...
    In this video I explain the differences between a Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) and a Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) in a flyback switching power supply (SMPS). CCM and DCM modes also apply to an inductor of a non-isolated converter (buck regulator, boost regulator or a voltage inverter) and to the output inductor of a forward switching power supply or the output inductor of a half-bridge, a bridge or a push-pull.

    How does a controller maintain CCM operation if it were designed for it? Would it very the frequency?
    I think I'm beginning to wrap my head around the difference between single feedback loop controllers like the MC34063 and dual feedback loop controllers like the TL494. The 34063 just uses a current sense resistor instead of a comparator to achieve essentially the same thing. Both controllers should be able to operate in DCM/CCM depending on the load.
    Are there any common designs that alter the frequency as well as the PWM cycle?

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 лет назад +5

      It actually can't maintain CCM. It goes into DCM at a low load. Most of the power supplies don't vary the frequency (like the ones with UC3842). Some SMPS chips with an integrated transistor would vary the frequency down (or drop pulses) at a low load, but this is done to improve the efficiency during the low load. This is not to keep CCM. It will still be DCM at low loads. There are also some FM power supplies that usually run at maximum duty cycle (they don't vary the PWM), but they change the frequency towards or away from the resonance of an LC resonant circuit to regulate the load.

  • @predator9621

    one question:
    when we have a load that has take more amps.so the output of the powersupply must be decreased.ok?
    tl431 is for that.
    switching must be raised up to the voltage fixed.ok?
    so for example our voltage is 12.if we put a load something like a car`s bulb.it take more amps from output.
    after that tl431 turned on and voltage of output was fixed.
    question is here if we cut the load from output, what happen for voltage of output?

    In CCM, why does secondary current drop to zero the instant the transistor turns on? Why can't there be current in the primary and secondary at the same time?
    When transistor turns off and voltage swaps, won't current in primary flow in opposite direction?
    When the transistor is off, where the voltage polarity swap? At the primary?
