My heart goes out to these young people, hope they can persevere and carry on keeping their sanity. I guess lives of the lower strata of society is the same every where in the world. Born poor and die poor.
Was the boss offering to buy them cars an insult? Can understand that having a car is not the end of their problems.

Factory workers typically love overtimes as they allow them to achieve their (basic) dreams in shorter time. In the 80s and 90s, factory workers in Singapore love overtimes. Unfortunately for them, these days there are a lot less large factories as the country has become too expensive for large scale factory operations so many of these workers became full-time housewives. Exactly! Same here in NZ. Many graduates don't get the dream job they studied for because 100's of them every year graduate and hope for the same job which logically won't be there. For example, there are well over 100 graduates per year who come out with a teachers degree but there aren't 100 teaching jobs available per year. Its crazy. China is the worlds manufacturing leader. On-line retail is an easy side hustle for them because they have the cheap goods at their disposal. Whereas foreigners have to go through AliBaba or other companies to get the goods. I've been post-graduate for 23 years and never got my dream job. So 5 years after graduating I got my truck licenses and thats what I ended up doing. Now I've finished. I'm 60 years old and now creating a product I hope I can mass produce. Maybe I'll get a Chinese company to buy it from me. Hears hoping. Never give up or you'll definitely be a failure.

What is a common thread here is personal choice to drop out of school because they are lazy. Then, it's compounded by the fact they waste their paycheck on eating out, KTV, and cigarettes.... along with wasting their valuable off time not trying to improve their situation. Lastly, the young women don't appear to be interested in finding a wealthier man to marry before they turn 25yo. This is another waste... as a woman with no education, no money, and especially no youth is essentially never going to improve their situation.

    • @ChinaUnvarnished

Your perspective is valid; you've pointed out the shortcomings of these young people. However, it's equally important to consider the broader context in which these decisions are made. The young people should simply live their lives together without consulting their judgemental parents. As long as they refrain from having children, a hard life with a partner beside you is preferable to a hard life alone. Even if parental permission is required in order to get a marriage license, what’s to stop them from dating forever and just being happy with eachother’s company?

So, this is how the Workers' Paradise actually treats its workers. It reminds me a lot of the early Victorian era in England and the U.S.: terrible working condtions, long hours, meagre pay, fear of being fired at a moment's notice, etc. etc.
Communist China, just like the former Soviet Union, has a rigid class system. If you're a blue collar person you're discriminated against and looked down upon by the middle and upper classes, viz. the young lady's parents not wanting her to date or marry "below her station"
