Wow i would have expected it being analog. Thanks for the warning! Glad it still feels great for what it is! And of course most retro games are digital anyway.
What do you know? A reviewer who ACTUALLY knows how to properly test a D-pad: by doing dragon punches on Street Fighter! In all seriousness, seeing you pull off consecutive dragon punches immediately tells me all I need to know about that D-pad. Nice work!
Man... Exactly! I bought the 8bitdo SN30 Pro 2 controller because it's the best dpad ever! I was extremely disappointed. I went and double checked reviews and noticed everyone jumps on super mario world for their test. I was like, what the hell? I noticed missed inputs and accidental diagonals on that damn controller. The game i played was Super Metroid and it was making wall jumping difficult. What amazes me is that it's a known issue and multiple solutions for this. If controller needs to be modified, why does everyone recommend it still? I even came up with my own "fix" and it works better. No issues wall jumping now.
Excellent work on the reupload, @Sega Lord X. It's great to see somebody who cares enough about their audience to make sure they're not inadvertently misinforming them.
Well that's a downer, really thought it would be a 3D Pad alternative option. Still it might have some homebrew potential across the three Sega consoles. I really don't see why it couldn't do 3D Pad support given it has a Mode button, could add some analog triggers behind the bumpers. Thought the same thing, that thumbstick is too close, needs to move towards the center more. :\ Maybe a BrawlerGen2 could address this as some companies aren't above model revision. Even though those three systems don't have Rumble, adding it would give the controller more weight and heft. Maybe Rumble approximation based on regular game sound like the approximated the D-pad through the thumbstick.
Yeah, this is my one major disappointment too. My one _minor_ disappointment is that it's not 3 in 1 - Mega Drive, Saturn, and USB - although I suppose doing that would make it slightly costlier to produce since USB takes quite a bit more circuitry than those older, simpler connectors. That being said none of the Saturn to USB adapters I've owned have supported analogue anyway... if this hypothetical second revision came with one that did, I'd buy it purely to use my official Saturn steering wheel in MAME (mostly for Out Run) 😁
@@DissociatedWomenIncorporated Was just telling my buddy how nobody ever asked for D-pad to analog conversion ever, see Neo Geo mini. :P I was considering the USB variant for one analog emulation use like SS/N64. Shame you haven't found any good analog solutions, must be because of fewer 3D SS games so the dollars aren't spent for support there. :( That sounds like a great idea, the SS wheel is a sweet peripheral, love the way your legs can brace the base. :D
I made the assumption that the stick was an analog stick and I am glad that I did not buy it now. My only reason for picking it up was so that I could avoid swapping controllers for 3d analogue support. Now that I go to their site, they have 2 lines of text in red at the very bottom that says the analog stick registers as 8 way. I remember them saying it had an analog stick and they even call it that in the red descriptor that literally says it's NOT an analog stick and in fact is just a digital 8way. That's some pretty serious misinformation.
This sounds like a great backuo for when my 6 button pads start to falter. The fact that it also works like a standard Saturn pad is a really nice bonus.
This video ... is one of those that you thumbs up before watching ... AND the Retro Fighters BrawlerGen is currently my BEST & most prized piece of kit to be completely honest! Works leagues better than the original for schmups due to the relaxed position of the 3D stick that is butter smooth, responsive, and perfectly clicky enough.
They missed a big opportunity with that analog stick. I always thought the original 3d controller didn't have enough throw on the stick and was hard to do subtle movements. Maybe they can do a second one that really mimics the 3d controller.
Thank you Sega Lord X! I was about to order one of these under the false pretence it was a true replacement for the official 3D pad - Luckily I saw this video 🙂
I was thinking about getting one but don't like that split cable design. Wish they would have gone with a single cable with two separate plug in adapters. I was wondering about hitting the thumbstick when using the D-Pad. Thanks for addressing that. Will you be trying the Dreamcast Retrofighters controller? Would be interested hearing your take on it. Thanks for all the great videos!
The only reason I haven’t picked this up yet is because of the placement of the joystick next to the d-pad. I would have liked it much better if the joystick was above the d-pad so it can represent the 3D pad a bit better
Pretty much games where you can now use the smoother feel of the analog stick over the D-Pad for 3D games that weren’t compatible with the 3D circlepad.
@@SegaLordX Great news man, looking forward for your feedback as a dedicated Sega gamer and not just some loosy gaming youtuber who will just say that it's better because it's newer. The thing I am wondering about the most is the analog stick, as the Retro Fighter 64 controller failed to deliver an analog stick with the same specs than the original controller most games are not as playable than with a real N64 stick.
Your experience with the dpad is interesting. I have the brawler 64 for n64 by the same company, and that dpad constantly gave me extra up inputs when hitting left and right. Made mortal kombat trilogy a struggle and I lost faith in them. Seems like you are having better luck with this on saturn so I might give the company another shot.
Good review. A bit disappointing that the analog stick is not an analog input. Feels like a big missed opportunity there, but I understand why they did it.
Im also gonna buy me one in the near future, this seems almost like a no brainer in my opinion☺️☺️Oh&and as many said here:You Rock Mr.Sega Lord X🤩🤩🤗🤗💪🏼💪🏼
I got two of these and I like the controls but They can’t replace the originals for me. The first one I got was the Grey Version thats supposed to match with the Grey Model 1 Saturn. Unfortunately the R Button came with this Mushy feeling whenever I press down on it. It still works but feels kinda weird. I heard it’s what happens when you open up the controller and don’t put the R button on correctly. I never opened it up btw. The Second controller I got was the original black. This one came perfectly without any L or R button issues. As I tested both I noticed quarter circle motions and dragon punches are a little more difficult to perform since the D-Pad is smaller now. I’ve gotten too used to the feel of the original Pad that these smaller ones throw me off. For other games like Beat em ups and platformers they mainly work fine but sometimes my character will turn around by mistake when Pressing down on the D-Pad in some of the games I tested. It could be my hands are a little bigger than normal or i’m really just not used to the controller. Some games like Sonic 3-D Blast, Willy Wombat and Crusader of Centy work great with the Analog Stick. It gives them a smoother feel when moving the character around the area. I think the main game that worked the best with the D-Pad is NBA Jam. Both the Original, Sega CD and TE(Saturn) worked great and feel tighter in movement than ever. If anyone is ever debating on whether to get one of these or not. Give it a shot and see how you like it. These definitely have their uses and they don’t have to replace the originals.
Thats weird that they chose to not make the stick analog, they could have made it switch between modes. I really think that limits its appeal. I hope we eventually the RetroBit ones, or even an 8BitDo analog Genesis/Saturn pad. That would be the ultimate since I want one pad for PC/Genesis/Saturn with 6 face buttons.
Yeah, I feel as though this is a huge missed opportunity. No analog stick AND no analog triggers? Why even include a stick on it, even if it's supposed to work on Saturn? They should've made it more versatile by making it usable as a PC controller to give them an excuse to include analog support on Saturn. Just have digital shoulder buttons and analog triggers similar to an Xbox controller, maybe even throw in a right analog stick (even if it needn't work for Saturn games), and you've got a great Saturn controller that arguably tops the 3D Control Pad. While I like the 3D Control Pad, I never really considered the toggle switch to be all that useful, as I wouldn't use that controller for anything that didn't need analog triggers.
The strength of this pad is mainly in its multi system functionality. If you are looking for something to replace the official controllers, there is nothing on the market even worth talking about.
@@SegaLordX I'm really happy with my 8bitdo controller for the Genesis, I'm also using it to play SOR4 on the PC. I would just love them to come out with a dual analog version like they did with the SNES controller. That would be the perfect all-rounder for me. I wouldn't need another controller. I need 6 face buttons 😜
I wonder if the Mode button does anything on the Sega Saturn. The 3D Control Pad had a +/O mode switch that toggled between standard and analog controller modes.
@@RedRanger2001 That's too bad. There hasn't been a 3D Control Pad substitute in the market, but if Retro-Bit made a wireless controller and receiver that took advantage of the 3D Control Pad protocols, that would be great.
Before you mentioned it the first image of the controller had me thinking that stick was a little close to the d-pad. I'd guess maybe they put it there for ergonomic reasons, or did they just go "oh ah we should put a stick on here to match the later controllers, we didn't really have room for it, and we don't' want to redesign the grips"
I have this controller. It feels great in my hands and I love using the select button on my Genesis Mini. Now I don’t have to get up to hit the reset button.
This controller is a good idea, cuts down on space and is easy to keep stashed away. Sometimes my wife confiscates my controllers when she says I'm not paying enough attention to her. With this I will always have a reserve controller.
Hey SegaLordX, being that you've tried all the new 3rd party controllers for the Genesis/Saturn, like 8bitdo, retro bit, and the retro fighters controllers, which do you think is best? It'll be awesome if you did a video comparing them side by side and giving your opinion which of them is the best.
I've got a question for all my fellow Sega nerds - do any of you know of a Saturn to USB adapter that supports analogue input? None of the ones I've owned have, and I'd really love to use the official Saturn steering wheel to play stuff like Out Run in MAME.
Brother you gotta take it easy, I just bought the wireless retro saturn controller and now you telling me I need this one too!🤦🏾♂️😂. Keep up the quality content capt!
So it doesn't work properly as an analogue controller? I'll just stick to my Saturn controllers then as this offers nothing in comparison. Though a Dreamcast one would be very useful as its controller isn't well suited to fighting games
Danny King However, the only downer is that the buttons cannot be remapped, so you couldn't have right bumper and right trigger mapped to heavy punch and heavy kick respectively.
This controller looks great I need a that I could use for nights into dream's. Also I need a new controller for my Genesis and Master. Quick question though is it comparable with all Master system games like Bomber Raid and can you pause the game from the controller?
Personally I find it a huge bummer they didn't make it an analog stick and analog triggers.. then it truly would have been a legit 3d controller replacement and the d pad could still be used on the other consoles. I don't understand why use a digital non clicky analog feel stick at all. There's always a compromise with this dev's controllers for me which stops me from investing.
I got one for the genesis mini It's pretty dope, only complaint is fighting game moves are harder to pull off on the d pad otherwise it's a great controller.
Looking to replace my Genesis controllers and trying to decide between the BrawlerGen and the RetroBit solutions. I'm still on the fence, but your feedback about the thumbstick positioning was something I was worried about. Thanks for that insight.
In my opinion the d-pad is pretty close to the original one but not equeal. I could feel worse performance in games that requires precission, like Ghost & Goblins
Important question. Does it work with Master System games that don't work with the Genesis controller? I just had it coming already at the of the video, the so said analog stick is too close to the D-Pad.
The N64 version of this controller is the only N64 controller I will use anymore. Unfortunately I have too many Saturn controllers to warrant buying one of these.
Hey bro, that's a cool review, but I gotta be honest that it doesn't answer my most important questions. To me the most important things are: 1. is it still good after half a year of being a daily driver? Or does the dpad creak, and the jotstick drift? 2. What is the manufacturer repair warranty support service like in that case? 3. Does it survive falls ok? 4. Can aftermarket parts be used for repairs? eg can the jostick cap be replaced with one meant for a ps4? can the encoder be replaced with a ps4 or xbox encoder? can the cable be replaced easily with a stock one, maybe with mods? this is super important after warranty is over and/or after the company folds - and let's be honest that's a more than likely scenario for third party manufacturers
Odd question. If the stick isn't analogue how could you steer the bike so well in ManxTT? It looks like it's steering progressively rather than chunk by chunk from a regular d pad.
Have you ever seen or heard of the game Ranger X? I know you are into shoot em ups, I feel like that one was relatively obscure for Genesis and was absurdly advanced for it's time and really cool. I've just never seen you mention it before and was wondering if it's one you've ever checked out
Looks cool but in my case I don't really need it since I've only got a Saturn so I can't take advantage of the feature of playing more than just the Saturn
The fact that this is wired is a deal-breaker. WHY WIRED? It's 2020, not 1995! Wireless is the future, people! Get with the program! I'm still holding out on 8BitDo to make a wireless Saturn adapter for their Genesis controllers.
How did thia guy get the controller to work on the genesis and sms with out an adaptor considering the sms and gen use a 9 pin atari set up and the saturn has its own plug
I have already my favorite solutions at home, for cabled solutions the old controller are great... Including the huge analog Saturn controller.... For wireless i have the m30 8-bitdo for megadrive and retro-bit for Saturn.... For dreamcast... I need an WiFi solution... Are you aware of any solutions there? I understood the changes you did on the video... To better explain the analog part... Thx for that 👍
How does feel if you use "the claw" method of holding the controller? I stupidly held the Genesis controller like that and it's how I always want to hold the controller on all retro games today. I really like the idea of the analog pad acting as the d-pad for some Genesis games - I just wonder about the grip when trying to "claw" the controller. Also the claw is why I hated the SNES - I'd go over to my stupid friends house and play Mario Kart and just sucked ass since I could not hold the controller and use my thumbs for the buttons and try to hit the shoulder buttons. Mario Kart still pisses me off to this day... just give me 6 face buttons and I'm happy.
Being compatible with both Genesis and Saturn does seem nice, but the fact that the stick isn't analog definitely seems like a major misstep. If they were wanting to lower the cost, why even have a stick on it in the first place?
@@SegaLordX OK, well my first Sega Genesis game was NBA Jam that was made by Acclaim as Acclaim had publish their games under Flying Edge, Arena, and Acclaim themselves even though they have a bunch of titles under their belt they even release Mortal Kombat for the Sega Genesis.
Question and Comment: Have you ever tried different modern style controllers for the Dreamcast? That controller really hurts my hand after not too long a playing time. And Comment: You talk so much about Virtua Fighter 2 that I gave it a go for the first time in over 10 years. Just on normal I couldn't get past Pai. (Level 4) Gave her 4 tries and she kicked my butt each time! The game plays so much differently than the capcom style fighters I play so often.
Wait, why even have an analog stick if it's not an analog controller? That makes no sense and has totally killed my interest in this. I'm still totally inexperienced with the Saturn so forgive me, but is there actually a technical reason that I'm missing? Because if not then it feels like a huge missed opportunity.
As the name implies, it's a fighting game controller. The mini thumbstick is meant to be a small arcade stick rather than an analog replacement. It's why stuff like Nights and Space Harrier still play so well. The smooth rotation of the thumb stick can really benefit certain games.
@@SegaLordX I see. Thank you! 😄 Still kind of a shame it doesn't serve as a modern replacement/alternative for the 3D Controller though, especially after the rather nice N64 controller and with the Dreamcast one on the horizon.
I find it's best for Sega Saturn because of the thumbstick. Don't use it for my genesis. Yeah, all the other reviews mentioned the dpad and stick are way too close -- don't know how they missed that fault.
They really dropped the ball with the lack of analogue control. Also their Dreamcast controller screams for a 6 button layout. These 2 simple additions would make these must buys for me. What a missed opportunity.

Thank you. It's a shame it isn't as good as we expected it to be. I really need a new pad for my Saturn. I own the original that came with the Saturn, which is the crappy one we had in the west for release, a 3rd party one that isn't as good as the original, and the 3D pad that I used to death with Nights and Daytona CCE. This time you answered my question. So it is not really analog... interesting, and kinda sad.
Ohhh come on ... hahaha
BrawlerGen randomly pauses on the Saturn if you are pushing too many buttons.
Flood of Power!
i wonder if plugged into a Retron 5 will all buttons work through the Gen port, or what goes on there
Why won't anyone make the top face button row identical to the bottom row?
In my opinion the d-pad is pretty close to the original one but not equeal. I could feel worse performance in games that requires precission, like Ghost & Goblins
Important question. Does it work with Master System games that don't work with the Genesis controller?
I just had it coming already at the of the video, the so said analog stick is too close to the D-Pad.
Imagine if they would’ve put analog triggers beneath the L and R buttons like modern controllers.
I have this. The analog stick length is a little too high and gets uncomfortable after a while. For me anyway.
The N64 version of this controller is the only N64 controller I will use anymore. Unfortunately I have too many Saturn controllers to warrant buying one of these.
Hey bro, that's a cool review, but I gotta be honest that it doesn't answer my most important questions. To me the most important things are:
1. is it still good after half a year of being a daily driver?
The Manx TT footage was 3D Control Pad gameplay of what this pad couldn't do. I probably should have labeled it as such.
Man what is the song that starts at 2:13? Having a massive memory block right now!!
It's from Nights Into Dreams.
@@SegaLordX Wow I am embarrassed right now 😆 thanks!
The controller has both plugs....
👍
I have already my favorite solutions at home, for cabled solutions the old controller are great... Including the huge analog Saturn controller....
For wireless i have the m30 8-bitdo for megadrive and retro-bit for Saturn....
For dreamcast... I need an WiFi solution... Are you aware of any solutions there?
I understood the changes you did on the video... To better explain the analog part... Thx for that 👍
RetroGameForce 8bitdo is the best
Why Analog dont have a octognal gate ?
Doesn't work on my clone system
Awww, too bad it’s not analog. That’s exactly why I was interested as a possible fall back for Saturn analog
Can I use this on samsung fone
RetroFighters told me the stick was analog and works with all games on Genesis and Saturn that supported analog input. Did they lie?
Well looking at the video it seems they lied indeed.
This device is not analog in any sense of the word. The thumbstick is like a mini arcade stick.
@@SegaLordX Well shit. That significantly decreases my interest.
How does this controller work decently for Nights into Dreams but Retrobit's new one that's supposed to be better doesn't?
Sarah Bryant: BETTER RUN HOME TO MAMA NOWWWW!
I want one
Being compatible with both Genesis and Saturn does seem nice, but the fact that the stick isn't analog definitely seems like a major misstep. If they were wanting to lower the cost, why even have a stick on it in the first place?
The control is good but with that price I prefer to buy the wireless retro-bit
We can find on Amazon Europe ?
Pleaee do Acclaim on the Sega Genesis I really want to see you talk about Acclaim.
I'm working on it. They did a ton of games so its a massive episode.
Ture lies was also Accalim.
What song is playing around 2:22
I'd say if you bought this for Nights you got your money's worth, that's why I bought one.
Wait a second did you reupload this video?
Yes, I expanded the info on the thumbstick. People seemed very confused.
Will this work on the PS4 for games like SoR4? Desperate to know!
I tested the version that had Saturn and Genesis connectors. There is a USB version, but I'm unsure of its compatibility.
@@SegaLordX Do you know of ANY Genesis like controller I can use on my PS4 to play SoR4? I'm dying for that true SEGA experience!
I don't really see way they added a analogue stick that isn't analogue.
The game plays so much differently than the capcom style fighters I play so often.
they could of just put a switch on the controller to have the option to turn off the analog stick
I like the first video better
This looks like a controller I wouldn't want to use for my Genesis
I find it's best for Sega Saturn because of the thumbstick. Don't use it for my genesis. Yeah, all the other reviews mentioned the dpad and stick are way too close -- don't know how they missed that fault.
They really dropped the ball with the lack of analogue control. Also their Dreamcast controller screams for a 6 button layout. These 2 simple additions would make these must buys for me. What a missed opportunity.
Btw this is the first honest review I’ve seen on this controller. This channel is top tier. Keep it up bro!
Nice review! But may I ask... the music at 1:21... what game is that from?
It's from Midnight Resistance for the Genesis.
@@SegaLordX Thanks a lot. Loved that game back in the day on my Amiga... know I've known that track.
Thanks again and keep on. :)
Sucks it doesn't have analog stick :(
If it was pc compatible too then I might of took a punt on it.
He paid for this controller himself?!?!?!.. NO WONDER IT DOESNT SOUND LIKE HES READING OFF A SCRIPT OR USING GENERAL SPEAK!. AMEN! Thats why I sub and watch this guys content hes not a bought and paid scumbag shill.
#SegaLordX can you suggest some fighters that are worthwhile on the Sega CD? I don't like MK (fight me 😡) and I already own Fatal Fury Special. That game is fuckin BRUTAL
ruclips.net/video/IMX00B_6dko/видео.html
Found it 😆
Didn't you release this video a few days ago?
I redid it to clarify the analog/thumb stick questions people had. The first video confused people, so I wanted it to be crystal this time.
I have more than enough megadrive pads, as they double as MiSTer pads too :D
