  • Mitchell has sent me some Cork Bark Mini Jade cuttings off of a tree that came from Frank Yee's collection! The cutting are a variety of Portulacaria afra that get a very corky bark as they get older.
    Today I'm also pruning some of my younger trees, my Amur Maples, Elms, Black Locust, Zelkova, Red Maples, Nightshade Vine and my Natal Ficus.
    Thanks to Mitchell for the cool box of goodies today!!! Check out his portfolio here...

    Nice to some of the less glamorous trees. Thats the type of work you don't normally see but is actually more relevant to most people's trees I think.

    I think your ficus branches will take root. Ficus is very easy to plant by cuttings. Sometimes ficus leaves also take root🙂🌳

    Nigel, those Portulacarias will root in no time flat if you put the bottom inch or so in water. Just might be useful if they drag their feet a bit!
    You'll have some ripper trees soon. Love your channel

    If I'm not off too much, the tree at 25:00 is a willow. As the birches do, the willows will grow their first few years of growth with very big leaves. That way they gain more strenght to the roots in the future. Not sure tho, but I've seen it a lot in nature.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  3 года назад +1

      I think it is the easiest tree for growing aerial roots and the the leaves can be reduced really well. It has a nice texture on the trunk and is a good grower under many different conditions. The leaves don't look like a typical Ficus leaf, so they are a little more special.

      They didn't make it, I had them in the plant room and they never got going and eventually shriveled up. I think my plant room was too cool and not enough light maybe? • @hsvfanjan17
      @hsvfanjan17 3 года назад

      Portulacaria Afra (and most other succulents I think) don't like water immediately. You also let a cutting dry out about a week before putting it into soil. Just very different from trees, I think it's because their water storaging is very different
