- I'm pruning up my wife's Rosemary plant and find it has a nice trunk! Now the question is...will she ever get it back?
Three of my new Baobab seeds from Hawaii have germinated and it's time to pot them up.

The Rosemary is happy, Nigel is happy, Laura is happy. What a happy world :-)
Thanks, it's good to find a bit of happiness in the world!
@@TheBonsaiZone Thank you Nigel. You make me happy watching you be happy.
While I was making dinner I found myself trying to find the best trunk line on the broccoli I was cutting. It is difficult to turn off. Lol
You are fully immersed in the hobby!!
I’m the same. Constantly getting accused of bonsaiing everything by my wife
I really like the way you are repeating "it's not a bonsai" that's how I feel about every not bonsai plant I come around 😂 and then later in the video "well maybe I will turn it into a bonsai one day" 😂 I would say a bonsai enthusiast finds a way 🤣
Nigel's voice clearly showed he was the first one who didn't believe that rosemary isn't a bonsai😂
None of his trees are bonsai……if you like his videos, fine, but he’s no idea of what it is to produce a good bonsai
@Nigel Lee what are you talking about? He is one of the most revered bonsai artists out there, and in my opinion, produces the most convincing trees.
He takes time to study the natural form of trees and documents it here, for us, alongside his deliberate pruning and root work. In my opinion, he shows what can be achieved when the artist and the tree work together.
He practices clip and grow bonsai which is a more of a long game in the already long game of bonsai, which in the end produces graceful and flowing trees with taper, movement, and character, which cannot be achieved with wiring.
His sheflera banyan for example, is the product of many years of clip and grow, and you can checkout the playlists for all of his trees and see how they improve over the years.
Please, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it. I admire Nigel Saunders alot, his lessons about bonsai have taught me alot more than the principles of clip and grow bonsai, but also important life skills like determination, patience, and decisiveness, and how you can do your best right now, and enjoy what you are doing even if it might mean that you don't see the product of your work. Grow with your trees.
Considering it is only a kitchen herb, isn't it funny how Bonsai tree like the Rosemary looked after Nigel got his hands onto it? It has potential.
I heard that thats where bonsai started, the merchants brought their goods from far away and rosemary was one of em, I heard that someone kept it in its original pouch n grew it from there.... Its hardcase how Nigel has alota plant species that others wouldnt consider bonsai but, it works, well some of em do!...
I got all excited cuz I am growing rosemary from the grocery store. Cuz I am cheap like that.
I just have to get the cuttings to root and the parent plant can be mine!!
i got a $6 flowering rosemary last season from the nursery, it had a fluted trunk with great taper... over fertilized it U.U now its just pretty and dead. but now i know im after more rosemary
Remember, it’s not a bonsai😀 Happy wife happy life!
Not bonsai, two words that I just can't seem to get into my head!!!
Hard not to go full bonsai on that rosemary 😉😉
I think that day will come! Thanks Sam!
Good thing you planted your wife’s rosemary at an offset, I am sure that will give it a more balanced flavour! ;-p
My flowerbeds are full of catnip. It smells good and keeps the weeds at bay. I plant rosemary in my garden they get really big.
Happy wife happy life. Thanks again another good video
Yes, thanks Matt!
Glad you are feeling better.
Getting there, thanks Olga, I've heard of some people getting very sick for about a week!
Thank you for this video Nigel. FYI I've applied this technique to a mature Lavender as well and it's doing great! My goal is to have a Lavender as an accent plant. One flower. Wish me luck because I'm gonna need it.. :-) Your videos have come a long way and I enjoy them immensely. Between you, Sam Doeke and Peter Chan I've learned so much! Just wanted to say thanks!
There’s a big 110 year old black walnut tree on the estate where I work.
So you got a while to go with your black walnut bonsai Nigel :-)
Yes, they can grow big and mighty, awesome trees!
I’m pretty sure I would watch Nigel even if I didn’t bonsai 👍, I’ve got a few lavenders in the waiting for spring for a pot up
Sounds nice, I love Lavenders Peter!
An admirable display of how to apply bonsai principles to a must-have herb. It was likely due to your bonsai soil (your recipe given years ago)...which I've duplicated, though Perlite is difficult to find (3 provinces west of you). Of all places I finally found it at a stationary store! Thanks Nigel, this shall be applied this summer 😃
Happy Canada Day Nigel! Glad to hear you are on the mend and feeling a bit better. You’ll have full vigor back soon I’m sure. I love the rosemary bush. Hopefully your wife will let you have it for a bonsai eventually. Baobab seeds are exciting! I’ll watching for their progress. Thanks as always. 👍🇨🇦
Thanks Jay, one more germinated today and an Almond seed too!
You talking about all that rain and we here in California always crying about no water and hot heat🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s not a Nigel Saunders video without the signature ducks quacking in the background. 😂
Tu entusiasmo en esas épocas de vacunaciones es increible.....no hay que perder el entusiasmo de vivir.
Salud, Nigel.
Muchas gracias, ¡¡mucho más por venir!!
@@TheBonsaiZone 🙏
Can't wait for the update about this rosemary plant
It's doing well, no pruning required yet, but it will be coming!
Hi Nigel, thnx 4 the update on the Ta-Prohm temple! I really enjoy following the progression of that ! I'm happy 4 you that there are a few Baobab seeds germinated! Btw love this channel!
Many thanks Arnold!
Rosemary looks good. The wife looks happy with it. I call it a win-win. Good show!
Thanks 👍
Thank you so much for sharing; I am eager to see what those cashews end up doing! Go Habs Go!
Love what you did with the rosemary! I'd love to see what your wife does with the cuttings.
Thanks, Nigel!
I have to laugh I knew you wouldn't be able to resist I knew that would end up as a bonsai tree and what a fortuitous break of that side branch almost like luck with playing on your side LOL I would be sneaking that as a bonsai plant myself he he he
how enjoyable and informative this video is! thank you. i do think that Rosemary is longing to become a Nigel Bonsai! cheers….
Thanks for the video. I actually air layered the top of a massive rosemary tree and got it rooting. I hope it survives, I will move it indoors during extreme cold in winter, thanks for the advice.
If you wrapped your seeds in layers of paper towel instead of terry cloth, you could just pull the paper apart with your fingers if the roots got tangled in it. Also paper towels are more sterile than an old towel.
Good idea!! Thanks
Nigel sounding like a pro assassin …😂😂😂I also have killed a few desert roses in my recent tríes
Ya know? With all those straight branches coming off that main trunk all in one direction ... That could make a very interesting raft-style bonsai. Just turn it completely on its side and encourage the bottom of the trunk to grow roots.
That root over rock looks amazing even as is. It’s going to be fantastic
Thanks David!!
I see what you did there Nigel - prepping your wife’s plant to become your new bonsai experiment 😂
you know thats a new bonsai !
The rosemary would be a perfect candidate for your sprune and grow method! 😀
Stay tuned, I'm sure you'll see it again on the channel!
Of course I mean “prune/snip and grow”! Good to now we gonna see the rosemary again. Keep on bonsai-ing , we keep enjoying it!!
I love baobab....my favorite 💓
Awesome trees, hard to grow in Canada, but I'll try!
Gud luck sir , I used red soil for better growth. I have few trees and 1tree we planted in ground ... Adensonia digitata variety sir ..
Rose marry is such a good bonsai since it has small leaves and nice trunk
I don't know if this helps; but I grew up with a huge black walnut tree in the backyard. Without fail it was the last tree to grow leaves in the summer, and the first tree to lose its leaves in the fall.
I just used a root rake for the 1st time today. What a revelation!
Cuttings? Satan's spawn!!: Rosemary's Baby!!! HA HA!
Lol!
What a fun video ☺️
Thank you for sharing..nice bonsai presentation...i love it 👍
Hmm... Rosemary... The kits I got for the kids came with rosemary seed... Perhaps this winter I will grow those out :)
I believe "Arp" rosemary is the most cold hardy. Can grow outside to zone 7.
It's black walnuts give you a hard time. Squirrels are constantly planting them in my pots. I have 5 or 6 growing in pots where the original tree has died and a walnut has taken over. It is amazing they get them in without me noticing.
i cant keep a desert rose either Nigel look forward to a video
Thanks
Rosemary are super easy for cuttings. They make an aggressive root structure that will fill a pot densely very quickly.
Thanks Dana, I'm hoping my wife is happy with the cuttings and I can develop the tree!
Nigel, That trunk looked promising for a bonsai. Laura might let you have it if you start her another one. Well later I saw the one that separated, so there you go.
I'm hoping the cuttings root and I'll pot them all up for her! That should keep us both happy!
I understand that black Walnut roots poison other tress nearby. I had a big tree near my pond. Nothing grew around it. So it was cut down and everything started to grow round it.
Yes, this is true, many plants can't survive near the Walnuts!
Rosemary was one of the shrubs we could keep alive in southern New Mexico. We never watered it.
Thanks Beth, they are very drought resistant!
Might have to try and grow catnip to keep the cat away from my trees lol
Catnip is indeed in the mint family, tho not all that "minty." It makes a good cooking herb as well as a nice tea. I particularly like using it in marinara sauce.
This week in Washington state we reached 115* F. Alot of my trees were heat pruned. I've got some cleaning to do.
Glad u feeling better..
Thanks, luckily it wasn't too bad, I think the dentist was worse!
I have been thinking about a rosemary bonsai for a few years now, I might just have to give it a go! Maybe strike some cuttings from the one I cook with, as it is developing a big trunk . . .
My baobabs finally made leaves about a week ago. Even in Los Angeles they have a pretty short season because its just not as hot as they're adapted to.
Always wanted to do a rosemary bonsai
I havent had to water my trees in 3 days its so rainy right now in waterloo region
Cascade Catnip.. 😁
I can't bonsai everything....or can I?
Beautiful 😍, Kia Ora. I had my 2nd covid shot here New Zealand. I too not to good flu like. 2wks now. Keep up the wonderful work, I so love your posts and happy 😊 I found your channel.
Thanks Tanya, hope you're feeling better soon!
You want black walnut? I've got plenty, they are like weeds in my yard! I have an elm you could have too!
Thanks Kevin!
that serissa tree looks better everytime i see it.
Hi nigel sir
I watching your channal video's in Tamilnadu
i love your bonsai
Hi Nigel. Where can I buy the pots that you planted the baobabs in?
They were a gift from Tom of the RUclips channel "Grow and Clip Bonsai for Seniors" I believe he got them from Amazon!
Catnip is good as a calming tea for humans. I’m sure the neighbor cats will get it though.
I am glad to see you're reusing some used soil!! My lilac bush , which I pruned back, but it's not growing any new leaves?
Which injection did you get?
I got the Pfizer the first time and the Moderna the second one. I'm not sure about your Lilac, it should push out new growth soon, mine is starting to grow again now.
My rosemaries always wilt for a week or two after repotting, and lose a branch maybe, so dont be surprised if that happens. They always come back tho, with care :)
Thanks Zack, for once I didn't take a whole lot of the roots off! Hopefully it will do well!
Wow! Your wife is a gardening hottie!
I have to agree!!
I'm curious if the rosemary survived. I didn't have luck with pruning and reporting in summer.
I missed a little, are you keeping the sprigs of Rosemary? I mean for cooking herb? I love my Bay Laurel. It gives a double blessing. One as bonsai then as cooking herb.
It's a nice way to keep herbs fresh and on hand, they believe the hobby of bonsai started off this way!
Baobabs and Ducklings!
Cute babies, the duck is growing up fast, the other Indian runners aren't afraid of Quackers anymore!
Lovely rosemary, it's a shame it can become a bonsai!! Is it some particular variety? I have never seen rosemary with this tiny foliage
Hope you don’t mind an off topic question. I have the same 2.5 liter Haws watering can. In the last video I was able to clearly see the business end of the can. Did you drill out the holes in the rosette to create a courser flow? They are a good bit larger than mine, which clog easily with the algae that invariably grows in my rain water storage container. I hope Laura is happy with her Rosemary. I actually hope she likes the cuttings better and gives you the old growth portion for your bonsai collection. Love the videos Nigel. Very inspiring.
Hey there, nigel! I just got my hands on s thuja and am wondering how old your root-over-rock thuja was. i'm just a beginner at this rt and am excited to see the beauty that you are able to create with these plants
It was collected on one of our club trips, I'm guessing it was about 7 years old when it was collected and I've had it for about 8 years, I think!
Do you know how to repot blueberry for bonsai?
I don't know how true it is, but I've read that too much fertilizer might destroy the smell/taste of rosemary
Good to know, I have found that the leaves look different when given lots of water and fertilizer, they go green and shiny instead of blue and powdery looking.
Another great vid, Nigel! I do have a question though. Do you experience any rotting on the cut branches after you wet the canopy? I’ve read that the moisture would encourage fungal and bacterial growth around the cut points when with rain water. I’ve been neglecting to prune my plants due the increased rain we’ve been receiving. What are your thoughts?
Hey Nigel, what brand and type of soil do you use for your bonsai. I’m a beginner and I’m trying to make my own soil at home.
5:49 - 6:15 😀
Do you have any advice for keeping ants away from bonsai? I have tried sprinkling cinnamon on the soil as I read online, but still sometimes see them by my trees. I would prefer not to use an insecticide…
Place a tray of water under your pot and have the pot raised on a piece of wood, the ants will have to cross a moat to get to your tree!
Go Bruins!!!!
We're talking Hockey here, not golf!!
28:43 I think that those are not baobabs but something else that got in to your towel
I planted them right from the fruit! They came from Hawaii, I had more germinating today!!
@@TheBonsaiZone From my experience baobab embryos are as big as your finger, those that you planted looked like little weeds that fell on the towel and grew there
When it comes to the Desert Rose, what is it that you weren't doing correctly?? I currently have 3. 1 seems to be on the edge of root rot. Right when I think it's coming back I turns into a yellowish color. I'm hoping to bring it back... I'm trying my hardest to get it to dry out between watering.
I would always loose the plant after trimming the roots. I have learned that after cutting the roots, you need to leave the roots exposed to the sun and air to callous over before planting back in the soil. Once the plant begins growing again, you can slowly begin to water it more. In the winter it needs to stay dry and out of the humidity. It will loose all it's leaves until spring.
Jerome, from The Bonsai Supply, has just done a wire and repot of a desert rose and addressed this very issue. Good luck!
What kind of baobab are they?
😍
Straight up, a guy with hair like this knows his sh!t. -Think Einstein
Maria’s Garden has some good information on desert rose, check out her channel.
i honestly find it to be really cool to have ants in your pot when your growing plants. Its like 2 forms of entertainment in one.
Good for you for getting the vaccine. Sadly we have buried 2 people we love with covid deaths, one of them quite young and with no other medical complications. I take it very seriously.
Hmm... I don't think that's an effective way to germinate baobab seeds, I grew them by soaking the seeds over 2 days in room temperature water and then I put them in a mini seedling greenhouse in bonsai soil and 40% grew , but that percentage would of been higher if I didn't use the sand paper method on 60% of them.
I heard if you sniff Rosemary, it makes you feel good.... Hmmmm?
”conservative cut" you say...
I don’t think Im foist!
Thanks James, close enough!
Foist
Hii
There is a Foister named Mead, who has quickly taken the lead. His name sounds like Boston, but with an A, it's Austin and Mead is indeed in the lead!
