I used to own a 997 Carrera S manual and it was the best car I've ever owned until I bought a slightly used 2012 XKR-S convertible that was owned by the dealership. I actually prefer the Jag, it just has more soul and a much better interior. The Jag's suspension is also amazing for what it is doing with a car that heavy. The newer Carrera's are nice too, but they just don't look as good to me. Plus, you see them everywhere. As for something fun and different, for me, XKR-S wins, then 911.
Objectivity is key in a comparison test. This guy lacked said objectivity. He threw the rule-book out the window and chose the one he loved most. Where in that Porsche, dear sir, is the luxury and comfort that goes with a well-rounded luxury sports convertible?
Are you serious?! When i read the title i thought that must be a awesome review! But then i saw this guy! And even worst i heard how and what he is speaking...
Very cool test with a lot more potential. These cars are such different machines with different target groups and produced with different intentions that you probably should have divided the test up into different aspects like 'Best GranTurismo', 'Best Drivers Car' and 'Best Combination of The Two'. Still happy you choose the Porsche.
car and driver what are you doing?? CAR AND DRIVER STAHPPPP!! YOU WERE DOING WELL LAST YEAR BUT FIRST LIGHTNING LAPS AND NOW THIS???? KILLIN ME SMALLS!
It's amazing how years after years the Porsche 911 still remains the benchmark for all other sport cars. I used to have a 911 (997) Carrera 4s and nothing I've ever driven could be compared to the joy of drivind a 911. I miss my 911 so much.
I don't get what's with all the hate. This is definitely one of the best videos Car and Driver has uploaded in a long time. beautiful cars, great video
So you went all the way to Europe, tested 4 400+hp beautiful cars on some absolutely sublime roads, only to return with this 5 minute dial tone video? Can we have Bovingdon back please?
I think he tried to be the cool guy. Amazing BMW-bashing, like that, despite the M6 is not so bad at all. The best car in the test is the Benz for sure.
Totally agreed. Car and Driver has really struggled to find a journalist who is as good on camera as they are on paper. Falling behind Motortrend and Drive big time.
SL63 and XKR S...3rd BMW Gotta have the Sexy and best looking vehicle. Mercedes is in a class of its own. They always come up with the best looking cars...just check out their line up... However the BMW 650i grand Coupe is the looking car BMW had made in 20 years. Def a Banger.
Not sure where all the hate is coming from, i guess from fan boys that could never own any of these anyway? I thought this guy was fairly unbiased towards all vehicles and provided insightful feedback.
Though the presenter lacks a bit of emotion, the review is still not bad imo. He keeps it short and simple, without missing the important things. Also, he says some pretty different stuff about the cars, than you hear in other reviews - refreshing. Especially concerning the M6 and the SL...
This guy's comments are pretty fair. U can't get away the fact that the engine noise are from the speakers on the BMW and it is also true that it is super heavy like a 5 series. I am totally disappointed at BMW in recent years, they only care about profit nowadays
He was right though. The Porsche has the least power of them all, but has great weight distribution, a very, very light and rigid body, a high PSI turbo charger and 4WD to make it take off even faster. Porsches were never big on HP and TQ.
I thought the voice at the beginning of the video was as some kind of joke to immitate an old male voice from some kind of 1970's commercial. This man can truly make even the most amazing cars sound boring.
I like the Jaguar the most because it seems to be more of a fun car to drive then the rest but the Benz should have won hands down. The Porsche I felt was called the winner just because it felt more sporty but the luxury is lacking in that car unlike the Benz or even the BMW...
thanks for a blatant comment on the obvious - yes, the M6 is a long distance touring car that even has a somewhat-useable back seat. The SL AMG, well, it's a Benz - luxury with an AMG twist. The Jaguar has an automatic transmission. Right, IF the objective is to discern the sportiest of the four, the 911, the ONLY pure-play sports car in the group, better come out first. Aside from the Jag, the other fine automobiles could easily be selected as the "best" in their respective category.
I'm sorry, but as much as I'm sure this guy knows his car stuff, he was just not meant to speak to a camera. No inflection, no emotion, no excitement. Didn't even get past the beginning of the Jag before I stopped watching.
im looking at the comments and thinking to myself, it cant be that bad....then 3mins in im concentrating more on my fingers than i am watching the video :(
Way to review 4 cars in 5 minutes! These are some of the best, most exciting cars these manufacturers make and he yet he sounds like he is fighting a depression? What?!
I dont think the reviewer realised the 911 is much lighter than the other 3, and with pdk, it will do 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds, which is just as fast as the other cars.
The truth of the matter is all of these vehicles are beautiful and fun to drive. Some more than others. But the one thing a smart buyer will look for is what some of these cars lack, ease of maneuverability, practicality, and good ergonomics. In this video I feel that he wasn't critical enough. But to wrap things up....GO PORSCHE!!!
I hear you. He sounds knowledgable but the excitement you should feel driving such amazing cars just doesn't come across. So which one to go for? Well I'm a big BMW fan but the m6 looks clumsy and a bit souless. The merc is handsome and competent and I also like the look of the Jag...but the Porsche is probably the best allrounder. To be honest and I'd have a smile like a cheshire cat if I had the keys to any of them!
the BMW is boring, the porsche is really, really boring.. XKR-S and SL63 AMG are really sexy.. but I think I would choose the SL. because of the perfection.
Considering what your competition is doing in regards to embracing the video format and using it for maximum impact, you guys are dead last. Where's the narrative, the presentation?
Haters gonna hate, but this is excessive...? Good video / review, plus an intriguing perspective, very nice. I think it is safe to say that William Randolph Hearst would have had, I think, Rolls Royce, Bentley, or Range Rover deliver his guest to von Barron's Castle, but if haste need by the Bugatti Veyron would be the obligatory choice. Bloody Christ somebody get that review a six pack of Redbull!

The jag sounds amazing!
This is the most unenthusiastic host I have ever seen.
not everybody has to sound like a radio host. The information is the important thing
Don't fall asleep there Buddy...a little bit more coffee before the next video won't hurt you ;)
Objectivity is key in a comparison test. This guy lacked said objectivity. He threw the rule-book out the window and chose the one he loved most. Where in that Porsche, dear sir, is the luxury and comfort that goes with a well-rounded luxury sports convertible?

1 jaguar
2 porche
3 bmw
4merc
it's amazing that hearing this guy talk about $130k sports cats is like hearing your insurance adjuster explain his work
i prefer xkr-s
I'll still pick the Jaaag.
jaguar xkrs awesome

Why isn't this longer. More details.
Can anyone tell me where this beautiful place is?
No 2nd or 3rd place finish?
Porsche or Jag for me!
Great taste!
This guy really seems like he's having a great time. WOW
Dear Aaron Robinson,
I love your articles in the magazine, but please leave the video presentations to someone else.
Thank you
car and driver what are you doing?? CAR AND DRIVER STAHPPPP!! YOU WERE DOING WELL LAST YEAR BUT FIRST LIGHTNING LAPS AND NOW THIS???? KILLIN ME SMALLS!

Is it compulsory to change glasses while driving a Mercedes ?
So you went all the way to Europe, tested 4 400+hp beautiful cars on some absolutely sublime roads, only to return with this 5 minute dial tone video?
Can we have Bovingdon back please?
why all other videos are not available in my country (Saudi Arabia) !!!
this is the only one that im able to watch *sighs*
I think he tried to be the cool guy. Amazing BMW-bashing, like that, despite the M6 is not so bad at all. The best car in the test is the Benz for sure.
Totally agreed. Car and Driver has really struggled to find a journalist who is as good on camera as they are on paper. Falling behind Motortrend and Drive big time.
The Beamer looks sooooo much sharper than the rest.
Can we all just agree that Porsche is almost in a class of its own?
SL63 and XKR S...3rd BMW
Gotta have the Sexy and best looking vehicle. Mercedes is in a class of its own. They always come up with the best looking cars...just check out their line up...

I love the grand coupe m6
Not sure where all the hate is coming from, i guess from fan boys that could never own any of these anyway? I thought this guy was fairly unbiased towards all vehicles and provided insightful feedback.
No back seat in benz so how can it compare
Very interesting and well done.
You had these amazing cars and only shot 5 mins of video? You need to go back and shoot another 15-20 mins. I am sure you won't mind.
Though the presenter lacks a bit of emotion, the review is still not bad imo. He keeps it short and simple, without missing the important things. Also, he says some pretty different stuff about the cars, than you hear in other reviews - refreshing. Especially concerning the M6 and the SL...
its a 5.5 liter twin turbo v8, you're talking about the M156, this is the M157
the difference is clear, clear eyes
wow
This guy's comments are pretty fair. U can't get away the fact that the engine noise are from the speakers on the BMW and it is also true that it is super heavy like a 5 series. I am totally disappointed at BMW in recent years, they only care about profit nowadays
Try to sound like you're awake next time!
This wonderful video...I wanted to have this doubt...which of these cars I would put in my garage...I think I would get the Porsche.
Benz, theyve been the best at making luxury sport convertibles for 60 years and it shows
Jaguar is KILLING everything these days💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪LOVE the aggresive look Newer jaguars have.Damn near Ferrari status!
Clicked because of the 911 thumbnail.
great upload! keep 'em coming!
He was right though. The Porsche has the least power of them all, but has great weight distribution, a very, very light and rigid body, a high PSI turbo charger and 4WD to make it take off even faster. Porsches were never big on HP and TQ.
Hearst Castle is in California
I thought the voice at the beginning of the video was as some kind of joke to immitate an old male voice from some kind of 1970's commercial.

is this video made for seniors
But u gotta love the new jaguar F type
you could have done a 50 min video about every car on his ownand i would watch them
thanks for a blatant comment on the obvious - yes, the M6 is a long distance touring car that even has a somewhat-useable back seat. The SL AMG, well, it's a Benz - luxury with an AMG twist. The Jaguar has an automatic transmission.

These are all amazing cars, why is this only 5 minutes long? It should be 5 minutes per car... -_-
A couple of things take away from the great cars on show:
The host
The vid should be a lot longer
Where's the drag race?
What happened to Jethro?
My Heart skips a Beat ,wonderful Car
im looking at the comments and thinking to myself, it cant be that bad....then 3mins in im concentrating more on my fingers than i am watching the video :(
Way to review 4 cars in 5 minutes! These are some of the best, most exciting cars these manufacturers make and he yet he sounds like he is fighting a depression? What?!
Stop showing his face! lol
After watching this, I wonder how he'd explain jumping out of an airplane. I'm on the edge of my seat
Good Monotone speaker
BMW's have lost all soul that previous models had, current lineup is more mercedes than bimmer
You have great taste
Porsche has the best racing chassis in the group..
I dont think the reviewer realised the 911 is much lighter than the other 3, and with pdk, it will do 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds, which is just as fast as the other cars.
Out all of them in my opion the 911 looks the ugliest
carlos ortiz agree
Best reviewer yet. I'd take the SL or the 911, but not the others.
Quick, someone get this guy an espresso.
Really enjoyed the review. Short and to the point and intelligently delivered. Thanks. (I agree about the Porsche. It is a do-it-all car.
4 cars in a 5 mins video. not ok. Hearst castle, been there, amazing place.
XKR-S!
Those are some beautiful cars!
Absolutely correct!
I felt like in school with this guy
It's funny how he says that the Porsche is down on power... because its the fastest of them all :P
yeah but wouldn't it be better if they compared the most powerful versions...? M6 vs XKR-S vs SL65 AMG vs 911 turbo S?
1) Mercedes SL63 (by far)
2) BMW M6
3) Porsche 911
4) Jaguar XKR-S
This monotone is killing Me bro....
MotorTrend are owning you guys!
I actually liked the video. There was a theme, it wasnt just hey lets go skidding. Now to the cars, porsche dominating like always
maybe 5 years ago it wasn't turbo charged... definitely is in this day and age.
While watching this video my attention gradually shifted to the drying paint on the fence outside my window.. Yea
I couldn't make it through the review with this guy's voice droning along...
I like that Basef guy. Just let him do all the reviews.
I think he did a good job.
I thought it was quite a good video, but that is my opinion.
you're wrong. it is a 5.5 litre TURBO!
The amount of dislikes are a true reflection of this video.
SL, M6, Porsche, Jag. On that order for me
I hear you. He sounds knowledgable but the excitement you should feel driving such amazing cars just doesn't come across. So which one to go for? the BMW is boring, the porsche is really, really boring.. XKR-S and SL63 AMG are really sexy.. but I think I would choose the SL. because of the perfection.
hate it when they compare the best in class of one brand against the lesser of a class of another brand. should of been a SL65.
I've been to Hearst Castle, and those roads leading up to it seemed like excellent driving roads.
Considering what your competition is doing in regards to embracing the video format and using it for maximum impact, you guys are dead last. Where's the narrative, the presentation?
Do your research. Mercedes SL63 AMG is not a turbo charged engine.
Great cars,great roads,now get a proper and
real car journalist that doesn't sound like
Stephen Hawking stoned
Bring back Csaba Csere! This guy is so monotone he could be a foghorn.
this guy sounds like stephen hawking LOL
