My dad is a retired Navy aviation mechanic and worked on Phantoms for much of his service in the 60s and 70s. Speaking of the folding wingtips, apparently the actuator that folded and unfolded the wingtips was not marked as to which side was attached to which point in the wing and could easily be installed backwards (and often was). This resulted in one wingtip being folded up while the other wingtip was unfolded in the downward position. He said it was hilarious to look at one tip going up while the other went down, but it got a lot less funny when it took hours to undo and redo the work.
Hi, thanks for the review of the Phantoms! Regarding engine start, you did a false positive - the DC switch needs to be in the ready position, but you left it in safe ( it can be seen as so while you're running through the checklist ) - no DC power, no Ignition power either. Full flap drag issue is our fault though, MSFS was not reading the drag coefficient correctly, fixed now for the first update which has been sent to the Marketplace today. Interior texturing has always been my weakest spot, I'm hiring artists now to make a better job of them - exteriors were done by an artist though. I thought they were okay but I might revisit them soon. Paint kit is also now ready and will be made available for livery artists, and it includes the PBR layers to help them adjust those finishes if they want to. Cheers, DC :)
@@galaxyheadspace_1317 It is called adverse yaw and is a real thing in the Phantom and many other aircraft. It must be flown with respect to AoA and correct airspeed to avoid a departure.
Very cool! Long ago I had a friend (mentor really) who flew them for the Navy in Vietnam. He described it as a pilot holding their arms out to the side (I think he was saying they have small wings) with two huge engines strapped to their backside. Thanks Angel
Thanks for another excellent review! I was present and stood only 10 feet away from the F4 the day it was christened by the Missouri 😂Governor’s wife. It was comical 😂 as she hit the birds nose cone multiple times before the champaign bottle finally broke. Living only about 30 miles from Mc Donald Douglas in South St. Louis these beasts screamed low and fast over our home frequently breaking the sound barrier as they tested the aircraft. Many people complained as it often broke peoples glasses or windows. Finally a law was passed to stop breaking the sound barrier over cities. I loved watching them scream close overhead at the edge of the city. Quite a beast!
I cant wait to get this one, I have all the other DC Designs aircraft and I am quite pleased with most of them. F-4 phantom has always been one of my favorite fighter aircraft.
If weaponry isn't allowed, perhaps someone ought to come up with an addon that at least has nonlethal "gun cameras" so that MSFS pilots (by that I mean those who don't have time for DCS) could practice dogfighting, ala "Top Gun," in multiplayer mode. Just something, anything that would make it worthwhile buying these military aircraft beyond the need for speed. Just a thought. Oh, BTW, love your videos.
Textures will be updated, I would rather plane that flies right than one that looks right. Follow DC he explains what’s going on and what is to come. This will only get better and better. The recent update fixed the full flap drag issue and now has a team working on improving textures on all his planes.
One of my favorite birds from the Vietnam era. Now if we can get a Sky Raider. I bought this one straight away and love it. I like to use the military planes and fly from airbase to airbase...heh. Thanks for the review.
Great video, it's a fun jet, it feels heavy at times, and picks up speed quickly. But I agree on the texture it is a disappointment when compared to the f14, harrier and f16. I was doubting my purchase when I got it, dc designs can do better. But it quickly became a fun aircraft so I can do with it. Hopefully, they update it and I agree I want an A6 !
Side note on landing, from what I recall, Navy designs were all designed to be AoAed right into the ground, without any flair at the end. Basically they needed to get the hook to catch and flairing would add to much variability in the contact. I don't know if they had it in the Navy F-4's but the F-14 has an AoA indicator right of the cockpit frame that you can use to make sure you're all AoAed up for landing. Really handy in the turkey with too many control surfaces.
I was visiting a relative at an AF base in Florida years ago that was home to both AF and Marine planes. We sat at the end of the runway one day (wearing headphones - wow were they loud) and watched pilots from both land. AF pilots came in in their speedy little jets, flared, floated a bit, and settled in; the Marines came in in their heavy-duty jets, no flaring, no floatiing, BOOM onto the deck. Pretty cool.
It's called being On Speed AoA when you get the Donut in the indicator. Basically you aim where you want and modulate your speed to get the AoA right. Hence being On Speed. Air force have them in their jets too. Not just navy jets.
Thanks for taking the time on this. I am by nature a GA guy and I am still on the learning curve of the A2A Comanche and loving it. As an old Marine I remember the end of F4's career. Even had one buzz my home town as a kid. But I think I will pass on this beast and get proficient in the A2A Comanche instead. Thanks again!
Kinda funny but common for you to keep emphasizing that the Phantom is “so big”, “huge”, “a big girl”. In person it really isn’t. It’s the bare minimum to wrap around a couple of medium sized jet engines and no more. The combined fuselage/canopy is no taller than an average adult (minus the landing gear height), and the cockpit only holds pretty small pilots. It’s ten feet shorter than a typical semi tractor and trailer rig, and the wings are only as wide as a two lane road. But beyond the measurements, when you see one in person after seeing pictures, your impression is:”Wow, that’s a dainty little bird with quite a slim cockpit.” It’s not F-16 small, but it’s NOT huge. Go find one in a museum near you, and you’ll see what I mean.
I was an instrument/autopilot technician on the F-111B while at Mountain Home AFB in Idaho in the middle '70s. Saw a lot of cool stuff, but my fondest memory was when, as a newly minted airman, I was given the task of removing the accelerometer in the main landing gear wheel well for routine maintenance ... the highlight of which was removing/reinstalling safety wire on four bolts which only a contortionist with four arms could do. It was fun, too, to sit in the cockpit during an engine runup and pull that little handle under the left sill that swept the wings. What's ironic is that when i was a sophomore in high school in '66, I gave a presentation in speech class on the F-111 using a model my dad had built.
We're past the halfway point of 2023 and DC Designs still doesn't understand how to make a proper external model look good. Those panel lines are atrocious, and the whole thing looks like a cheap prebuilt plastic model.
Fighters are tricky, unstable and fly like a brick when you cut the power. Don't beat yourself up over the landing. DCS fan-girl here! I am familiar with the interior of the cockpit, I have been allowed into the nose section on display at RAF Cosford. I like this model but the visual quality is way off.
I quite like DC, their aircraft are fun, they put cool features in the cockpit and the sound is always amazing. Also, their aircraft actually work as intended. I spent good money on the SSW F-104, which is still unflyable.

The Phantom is my Fvaoite fighter jet to fly in sims and games because it suits me so well... But this guy has almost much issues as the Big radials P-40 I have... Must be nice to have flaps though... Still for under $10 I would pick it up for sure just because it's my favoite.
This seems okayish... Can't wait for Heatblur to finish the F4 Phantom for DCS . That's really going to be a game changer !!
As always from DC designs, low quality and no attention to detail for a product costing the same price as some AAA games.
Real shame the externals look cartoonish.
этот сим ещё не умер? после 2020 здесь такая убогая графика...
Aircraft is pretty but just like all other DC aircraft, it flies like a brick.
What do you expect from a dev that pumps out planes every few months. They are made for the xbox crowd. Way way way too overpriced! Deimos will be overtaking this dev soon.
i used to be major aviation geek. MSFS has waned me off that. i don't care much about aviation any more. didn't even watch Top Gun II. i guess im getting older. saving my inflation money for something else (fun fact F-4 Phantom bombed a lot of civilians in Vietnam -> fun fact that I always whip out at fun parties!)
Fun fact: nobody likes a Debbie downer lefty.
Why do you come here and crap all over the entire MSFS community? Grow up! "I guess I'm getting older." Right.
Fun fact, F-4 and Enola Gay didn’t bomb anyone. The pilot of both those planes did the bombing in both situations, not the planes.
The first women RUclipsr I’ve heard so thanks for that.
