The barking dogs are fed into a vocoder where they are split up into several bandpassed bands. The enveloppe followers on each band open up several vca's that let trough a string synth (as modulator) also split up into several bands (as carrier). This way the dynamic spectrum of the dogs are translated into a modulated matched spectrum of the string synth. I hope this makes sense.

Most recordings in the 70s used 16 track machines. Recorded on Master tape where they were mixed edited and ultimately put on vinyl.
2001 A space Odyssey came out in 1968, nearly a decade before Animals which was released in 1977. No connection there.
The Floyd also toured with this album in '77 filling up stadiums all over the country. It was technically called the "In the Flesh" but it has been dubbed the Animals tour as they performed the entire album from beginning to end. Complete with floating animals.. pigs cows dogs people, floating over the heads of concert goers and only adding to the high most were already experiencing from various pharmaceuticals and hallucinogenics circulating throughout the audience. The pig would be the only thing that survived the Animals tour and would appear at every Floyd concert since. The floating pig has become one of the iconic symbols of Pink Floyd. Right up there with the prism and that big ole wall.

Doug this was recorded in 1977 at Pink Floyds own studio Britannia Row in London, the music was recorded like most music of this era directly to tape with probably a 24 track machine, no music of this era went directly to vinyl but at the time this was released on the vinyl format as well as cassette and 8 track cartridge.

You have to listen to animals at least twice. First time just enjoying the music but the second time only focusing on the lyrics. An absolute masterpiece and Dogs ist my favorite song of all times.

One of the great things about this album is they didn't go around a bunch of farms in zoos and sample animal sounds. They made all those sounds with their musical instruments! Gilmore used a talk box to make the pig sounds by running something off one of his instruments backwards I didn't understand it completely but again these are all instruments. The dog barks were an actual dog going through a vocoder to make those weird barking sounds! In the movie 2001 A space Odyssey came out in 1968.

You're thinking of the Seagull sound on Echoes, where he plugged in the Wah backwards. He did imitate the sound of a pig by playing guitar with a talk box, but the animal noises otherwise, were found sounds. The way they did the loops was by literally stretching tape throughout the studio, using mic stands, and splicing the tape. Something that can be done in seconds with no effort, splicing or even tape, today. Kubrick tried to get Pink Floyd to do the score for 2001 but they declined.

Many Pink Floyd songs are important in themselves as each triggers many memories & visions & thoughts. Thoughts married to Pigs as much as Time, as much as Shine on you Crazy Diamond, etc. Money makes city driving a trip. Pink Floyd in my life has been tapes & albums. Their music, my thoughts. Life unfolding to their musical enhancements. Us & Them reminds me of a warm car in the Winter & seeing Holiday decorations. Like X-mas tree stands.

Yeah this is my favorite album by them too. One summer I'd set up this tent at a gravel pit near our house, and had meant to sleep the summer in it, but ultimately didn't get around to it. Some kids had put a hole through the wall. In October I thought I gotta spend at least one night in it, so I took my walkman and my Animals and off I went. Slept the night in a freezing puddle, listening to Dogs.

at the end of "dogs" those were not questions, they were statements. the lyric sheet in the original vinyl does not show "who was..." as questions. minor point, but one i like to correct when i see it.

  • @flubblert

It's a bit of a fallacy that recordings from the 70s didn't sound as good as stuff they put out now. A lot of audiophiles would argue that if anything it sounded better. The analog made the difference technically in the reproduction of frequencies. Check out "Crime of the Century" title track from the album of the same name by Supertramp, 1974, a few years before Animals. And turn it up! I defy you to present anything that sounds better today from a technical - acoustical standpoint. And speaking of Pink Floyd, the soundscape on "The Wall" album 1979, is something that just has to be heard to be fully appreciated. With all due respect a lot of stuff from the 70s, particularly progressive rock, with layers of perfectly mixed sound and real instrumentation/musicianship, sounded so much better then what you hear today.

Listening to the entire album at one time-awesome!! Several of PF's albums are meant to be heard all the way through as they are interconnected. Yes, PF is almost always moving, a lot of their music refers to the human condition. Animals is just as relevant today as it was when it was created. Subbed! EDIT: This album is referencing the book Animal Farm, how certain animals represent a group of people. As someone online wrote: it's a concept album about capitalism and how the human race is separated into three animals. the Dogs represent the ruthless business men, the Pigs are the corrupt leaders and the Sheep are the ignorant and impressionable common folk. The opening and ending tracks are songs of hope, what matters most is how we interact and love one another through all the corruption, hate and greed. In the beginning Roger is saying, if we didn't connect with another we would be primed to become one of the animal/humans written about on the album. At the end of the album, Roger is saying-yes, I am connected to you-I do care about what happens to you and you care what happens to me-so there is hope. My interpretations based on many interviews I've seen from Roger and other documentaries.

Definitely long past recording directly to vinyl at this point. It would have bee released on vinyl, but I think by 1977, 8-track tape was also super common.

Been a Pink Floyd fan since 68 have everything they recorded on vinal and 8 track. Including what they recorded in quadraphonic.
Was fortunate enough to see five of their concerts.
Still had vinyl when this was released and 8 tracks nearering its end as cassettes were becoming more popular and CDs were soon to be released introduced
They recorded as much as 16 tracks .
They are not making any Unique Sounds to this album that they hadn't already recorded years earlier. The Uma Guma album released in '69 had all these sounds and more.
They all used Moog synthesizers .
Richard Wright on keyboards is perhaps doing the most work as he was multi-instrumentalist usually surrounded with over a dozen different instruments.

It's their most complete album imo. Everything on it is stellar. It also has possibly their most scathing lyrics next to The Final Cut album. It doesn't pull any punches in its critique of capitalism and power. It was made when punk was happening, and the punks hated Pink Floyd. At least, they said they did. But, Animals was made in part as a response to that. So, this has sometimes been referred to as their "punk" album. Perhaps not in the music or aesthetic as much as the general nihilism of the lyrics. But, I'd say it's one of the most enduring statements to come out of that era. And like you say, it holds up very well musically. It's my favourite album of theirs.

The White House they're singing about in pigs three different ones is not the American white house but instead a lady named Mary Whitehouse! She was a social justice warrior trying to sensor anything that she deemed evil or naughty or too sexual to be in a record or on television!! That's why some of the lyrics talk about keeping our feelings off the street and your hot stuff in a hat pin!
