@@EricStevens-u8r I really am neither of these 🤔 I just have tastes friend.. and everyone comes with a different bundle of those :/ and they happen to evolve as I go through life, same as almost everyone.. edit : hm, Actually you know what? I'll take the "cool" compliment. I think it's pretty cool to be able to change your mind and stop idealizing an artist whose work essentially helped you build a great part of your artistic maturity... and move on. I loved them. Now I only love some of their art, and that's probably enough.
You’ve got to watch them play this album live “From the Basement”. Their ability to recreate these sounds live is unbelievable. They are by far the best band I’ve ever seen in concert.
Right after it was released, I listened to this more than any other song it was my favourite for a while. Now it's not as interesting to me, maybe a bit melodramatic. There are four clear standouts imo: 15 Step, Nude, All I Need, Videotape.
@@cnon. That wouldn't be my list, mine would be more like Nude, Weird Fishes, Jigsaw and Reckoner but I like every song a lot with Videotape being the only song I don't love to me that's melodramatic, maudlin song iv'e always felt Last Flowers is a much better song and would have been the perfect closer.
Some trivia: - According to Thom Yorke, the lyrics were based on "that anonymous fear thing, sitting in traffic, thinking, 'I'm sure I'm supposed to be doing something else' ... It's similar to OK Computer in a way. It's much more terrifying." - Unlike Hail to the Thief, In Rainbows is not an angry or political album. It's about mortality and the fact any of us can die at any given moment. - My theory for 15 Step is that the title is a reference to the plant Antiaris toxicaria, the poison of which is so deadly a victim can only take seven steps uphill and eight downhill before dying. What's 7+8? 15 Steps. - The band recorded the cheers of music school students for 15 Step. They wanted the kids to clap but the unconventional 5/4 time signature was too hard for the students to follow. - Bodysnatchers utilizes a technique known as "modal mixture", where notes and chords from different modes (sets of notes) that share the same root are used. The verses are in D Mixolydian (the Major scale with a flattened seventh), while the bridge is in D minor. - Nude was worked on for around a decade, starting during the OK Computer sessions. It was originally called "Big Ideas" by fans, as it was unnamed for many years. The final version was built atop the bassline written by Colin Greenwood. The intro is the outro reversed. - Weird Fishes / Arpeggi was originally just called "Arpeggi" due to the arpeggiated guitar line that can be heard through the song (clever bastards). - On All I Need, the chaotic noise wall, imitating the white noise created by a band playing loudly in a room (which would be impossible in a studio), was achieved by having a string section play every note in the scale, blanketing the frequencies. - In Reckoner, background vocals can be heard at 2:49 singing "In Rainbows", which happens to be 61.8% of the runtime; the golden ratio. The line "because we separate like ripples on a blank shore" is the center of the album; everything leads up to and away from it, much as waves on a beach do. - On House of Cards, Jonny used a coin as a guitar pick to imitate the sound of a string instrument. - Jigsaw Falling Into Place was inspired by the chaos inspired Thom saw when he used to go out on the weekend in Oxford. - Videotape is tricking you; the true downbeat is syncopated. The piano is playing half a beat before the downbeat. Listen to the 2006 live performance where this trick is much more pronounced.
The first time I heard Weird Fishes, I was up in the mountains in the Lake District UK. The atmosphere and backing vocals combined with the scene just blew me away 🤯😍
I love how music can enhance an experience. I was listening to The Smiths one day and there was a part of the song with rain. I kid you not, the moment the rain started in the song, I drove into a pocket of rain (I live in South Florida where it can be raining in the front yard and not in the backyard lol). *The best*!
I'll add to the stories. I was listening to Paranoid Android at my grandma's house in the village. I kid you not, come the rain down section, the sky suddenly decided to pour a whole ocean. The rain clanking on the roof kinda created a steady tempo too
What i love about the clunky percussion and repeated hums in Videotape is that it almost sounds like a tape reel coming to an end and the last piece of the tape flopping loose. So clever.
When I first got into Radiohead this was firmly 4th on my list of favourite albums from them. After listening to it countless times over the years I can safely say it's an extremely close second to OK Computer for not only their best work, but one of the greatest albums ever made. It's a masterpiece.
This way of you listening to an album for the first time the way you do it is really a good format. Kudos to you! And WHAT an album. Reconer is my pearl amongst the gold.
Great to watch your reaction. You grip onto so many elements at once, very sharp ear listening to music. Fun to watch and see how you're about to experience some of my favourite moments for the first time.
Beautiful album, really enjoyed your reaction and commentary! I appreciate you letting the songs play all the way through without cutting it up, it allows us to follow along and become immersed in the album along with you
YES!!! I love Radiohead!! Be sure and check out the In Rainbows Live from the Basement! Their genius is just so phenomenal. I know of no other band that could ever create as they did. Not one!! I love music but Radiohead is my favorite!!!
I had no idea it was time to listen to this album again, but it was really what I needed and I'm glad I got to see you experience it for the first time :)
Bodysnatchers is my favorite song of all time. You should check their "From the Basement" version of this album, you'll see how this sausage is made and it's the best sausage there is.
Again enjoying your reaction- Radiohead hold a very special place for me since first hearing them 30 years ago… I delight in this album, great vibe. Maybe their most coherent album since the Bends. Every album has its value from them.
Welcome to the world's greatest record. Oh how I Iove to be part of this gang of Radiohead fans on RUclips who flock over every time we have go chance to see new fan fall in love ❤️
In Rainbows is a masterpiece. Ok Computer is my number one RH album. In Rainbows is second. Every other RH is next, depending on my mood. Wierd Fishes/Arpeggi is my favorite RH song. I love watching people discover Radiohead. I wish i could hear them for the first time again.
The way you question whether the project will loop in on itself and then don't notice the text on screen: 'how come I end up where I started?' It was the only thing I could think of when you went 'nope! I guess not!' 😂😂
Absolute classic album - OK Computer, Kid A and In Rainbows are their top tier but you gotta hear A Moon Shaped Pool even just for the absolutely knockout Daydreaming.
You should go back and do Kid A (which was released in between OK Computer and In Rainbows). It will blow your mind how different it sounds in comparison.
Im 36 years old. My 1st experience with RH was Ok computer when I was like 15 when we all used to still have Diskmans and CD's lol, I was obsessed. Later on I've heard pablo honey and bends, and the following ones. I've heard the most I could about them. 2024, my fav album of them is this one. I think this is like their Dark Side of The moon.
Ed O'Brien contributes a lot of the background vocals but his "ahhhhh" sounds more like "ehhhhh" which has led to the running joke that he just sings his own name "Eeeeeeedddddd"
I downloaded masterpiece this for $12 on day one, but it was pay what you want. You could have picked it up for a penny or a million dollars. Just crazy?!
Now go to In Rainbows ‘From the Basement’ and watch it as a live experience. It’s even better. If atmosphere is your bag, Kid A is a whole other world. Amnesiac is darker. Skip King of Limbs lp and just go to their ‘From in the Basement’-that album shines live in the studio.
Everyone was telling me to listen to this album, I listened to 15 steps and bodysnatcher, and didn’t like the album and it all changed starting with Nude, and I listened to the rest of the album and for a while it was my favorite album of all time
Most people are probably unaware of the beat behind the beat on Videotape, and even though the guy reacting to this didn't say anything about it, his musicality was aware of it cos he was bopping his head to it perfectly when it was p!aying..
Many will say to listen to the albums in order, but you've started with 2 of the 3 masterpiece albums, IMO. You could do the third next, AMoon Shape Pool, which is also the most recent. They're all great though. Listen in any order, just record it!
You missed a lot from ok computer to in rainbows so I recommend you listen to their big transition album called “KID A” it is incredible that it is right next to ok computer. I recommend you read up on why the band went that direction. Very interesting…
Who said skip the first one??! lol. that fool! I like how the album openers sap lots of the energy like a party befre a drunk and thoughtful walk home for the remaining 80%. And what quality it is. Everything about this album is great really.
Last track is bleak as f***, no lie. Never skip this one though, I’m in for the full ride. I guess they want to leave us devastated. Mission accomplished!😢
I remember hearing this for the first time; didn’t like it then, still don’t like it now. Every so often I go back to it hoping I’ll get it, but it doesn’t happen. I really thought ‘15 Step’ was going to be industrial but in comes that weedy little guitar line that spoils it all. All the other songs have the same basic structure. ‘Reckoner’ and ‘Videotape’ are the only tracks I like from this album. Give me Kid A and Ok Computer over this anyday.
Staring at the lyrics on a first listen is such a mistake. His voice is essentially another instrument. Giving pointed emotional eclamation marks and carry through the silence. The lyrics are not of concern.. Especially not initially
You are a very lucky man, getting to hear this album for the first time. It's just simply one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard wtf

especially the last part of the song

Faust Arp has some serious Revolver / white album era Beatles vibe

One of the best album ever.... Faust arp seems to be highly influenced by Nick Drake !
