The yellow ring is confusing at first. It summons mobs from a different world and you have to kill those mobs. The mobs from the world you're in do not count and this is why the countdown does not seem to be going down. Lots of times when you are stuck at just a couple of mobs left it is because they are a range mob that is outside the yellow circle you cannot leave. Just get to the edge of the circle and try to target them the best you can. I hope this helps. Also I tend to save my exp magnets for right before the boss spawns.
the skulls are just elites. you can get stuck if the last mobs needed are ranged ones that are almost offscreen and not actualy in the zone
