TWO IMPORTANT CORRECTIONS. READ THIS.
It seems like I accidentally set my power meter to 900 MHz not 2.4 GHz when doing the power measurements. I guess I was thinking so much about comparing it to Crossfire that I had 900 MHz on the brain. Updated results are: 10 mW = 9 mW; 25 mW = 30 mW; 50 mW = 52 mW; 100 mW = 109 mW; 250 mW = 304 mW; 500 mW = 603 mW; 1000 mW = 937 mW.
The reason the menu wasn't working is because ELRS requires the arm switch to be on aux1 and "high" when armed. The Thor module disables the menu joystick when the aux channel is in the "armed" position. Since my switch was in the "armed" position during the video, that's why the menu wasn't working.
☹
That's way lower, so maybe "Joshua from the future" in the video? Also pointing to the Happymodel Pro module I measured on my website?
Ah thx
when I was watching this, I was thinking "wait, that meter goes down to 900mhz? I thought it was for video feeds"
totally missed the mistake.
So the happymodel module does more power? Well with considering possible inconsistencies because someone else measured the HM module to do, was it 1.4 or 1.3 watts or something? Would like to see them both tested with the same tester back to back.
The secret weed stash drawer! That’s clever. Those ELRS guys know their base!🤣
For that money they could have routed those cables a bit more neatly, like on the inside of the plastic case, as it's empty anyways. Less chance of wire damage.
Thats what i was thinking. it looks good in most ways, then there is a few loose wires holding things together. I get why they have them but it might be better with them more protected. I just use tracer so i dont know why im even here.
Totally agree!
@@andrewut7ya511 Cuz you really like JB!
@@tonymorgan328 i dont like jb... i love him.
This routing would only make some sense, if it was removable on both ends, so you could connect the module with the same cable. But even then I wouldn't have routed them at a hard 90 ° angle on the outside.
That wire getting crushed by the module bay door is exactly what i want out of a "Premium" product haha 😂
I would say the either the lite or full size Ghost modules are the best ELRS tx modules available, and now there supporting the OLED screen and joysticks that have been just unused on mine forever, I literally never used my ghost lite module with ghost, 5 min out of the package flashed ELRS, this was also before there was an available ELRS lite module that you didn't have to build, have a great day and as always thank you to all the ELRS Devs!
14:20 this is the killer feature that finally made me want this
do someone way 4twenty?
only available in the Botgrinder edition
Actually looks like a quality piece of hardware. I think you described its purpose well. I still love my happymodel module.
The soldering was garbage lol
Another excellent video JB! Thank you
Thanks for another great vid.
Excellent video as always Joshua Bardwell 👏 👍 👌 😀
Another reason why you are the best.
Hahaha. Cracked me up with that pull out drawer comment. Perfect spot
Bonus when that secret weed drawer heats up and starts vaporising the weed while your flying, maybe a bong attachment next ? Just a thought.
I got the radiomaster micro. super happy with it and it came with 3 receivers for like 50 bucks
Namimno Flash is really good. I have one and it working pretty good.
Thar was a perfect intro. Very nice Joshua 👌
ProgressiveRC will flash a brand new Ghost module with ExpressLRS and send it to you for less than this Axis flying module.
ImmersionRC makes some of the best hardware out there. I certainly don’t trust my long range link to BetaFPV. Ghost was my only option 🤙
FWIW the Ghost module only goes to 350 mW. There are some who will prefer 1 watt output power. But the Happymodel ES24TX Pro can do 1 watt for about $35.
I said the same thing but didn't know progressive would do it for you, that's some customer support right there but I'm not surprised after owning there chargers for years I would say there the best on the market still to this day! icharger 406DUO is awesome and been using it for years and years
I bought the ghost lite and flashed it direct to elrs when I got it, at the time there was no lite module for elrs that wasn't diy
Chadd you certainly can trust your rig to either beta or happymodel.. you just run it proximity like I'm sure you did your ghost and build trust
@@FastSloW-qt8xf Sure, trust can be built and I'm sure some of those companies will prove their ability to make a reliable RF module over time. But if you have paid gigs like I do you really want to start off with a company that already has a reputation for 'known good hardware'. I think a lot of people have been iffy to ELRS because it's not as well documented as other protocols. Deciding to trust a new protocol and a 'new to RF module production' company at the same time is the thing holding a lot of people back from ELRS. Time is proving a lot, though 🤙
I have a happymodel on a tx12 and a beta on a t lite. Each work great. Elrs is awesome because its cheap. And it happens to be the best. Thats a very rare thing
I love my TBS Mambo - Tracer Inside, always on ludacris mode.
if you ever need more, you can always whip out Peter the Penetrator!
More expensive means better quality ? Sounds like a shortcut, especially for a brand which is new at making TX modules, but time will tell ;)
It seems like BetaFPV or Namimno provides the same : joystick, oled screen, with a smaller form factor that doesn't protrude from the JR bay (at least for BetaFPV) and without wires hanging around. Futaba/Spectrum owners left aside, 3 times the price for a hypothetic better quality... I don't know, sounds like a blind bet 🤔
BetaFPV microTX review was good and helped (it made BetaFPV react quickly to fix several flaws), but I have to admit Joshua has been much harsher with Beta than with Axis, considering the price. A useless joystick sounds at least as bad as the several "small flaws" from BetaFPV's module, not mentionning the form factor. Not saying this review is biaised or dishonnest, it would be wrong, all flaws are identified, but it is much more forgiving with Axis while the price shouldn't allow this clemency 😉
5way button and screen should work even when plugged into a handset. Axis (under our direction) added a check to make sure you can't enter the menus while the quad is armed, which is based off the state of AUX1 (arm is always AUX1). I suspect you may have had AUX1 in a HIGH state (not because of the secret weed, but because of the switch state perhaps) while trying the enter the menu.
it's not a secret ;)
I don’t understand why we are being forced to use aux1 for arm. Requires me to change my channel assignments for my elrs quads. It seems to be unnecessary micromanagement.
@@360vroomers if AUX1 is always the arm switch, we can send it as 1-bit, rather than 3-bit or more. This reduces the OTA packet size, which is instrumental to the performance of ELRS.
@@WezleyVarty ok I use a 3-way switch for my arm switch because I combine it with beeper. Is that going to be a problem?
@@360vroomers 3-way switch for arm works fine, it just becomes 2-state. Beeper will need to go on another channel if you want to trigger it separately from arm.
hi mate, when you opened up the module with blobs of solder, i seen your soldering work, yours look good compared to that
for medium long range and over water etc.... i paid like 60 bucks for tbs nano diversity,
I've got the diversity RX for $49 on my site ;)
Looks good, but I think its too expensive. If it was doing 1.3 watts and could stay cool, maybe. Of course, that brings other questions up if it did.
Thanks for opening it up, looks like a nice setup. Those blobs are on the xt30, so somewhat acceptable. I hope the case is pressing down on it and used as the main constraint, not the solder.
I'm curious if that fan noise is vibration. That's quite annoying
I'm totally up for paying more to get a piece of hardware I can rely on. I want expresslrs mainly because of the exciting development and the quality of their software, not lower price. However, we have to ask ourselves at which point it becomes diminishing returns. While I'm totally happy to pay more for more reliability, am I getting that with this module? No one can really answer that right now as it's too early but it's something worth asking. I have a naminmo module and the built quality feels pretty good as well. Though, I'm not really an expert.
Another thing, frankly, for that price, they should have engineered those cables differently. They should just have a direct plug when connecting the two pieces together. It kinda becomes a deal breaker to pay that much and then have the risk (even if small) of breaking the cables when inserting/removing the module. Not to mention it makes it look more like a prototype.
Awesome review, Joshua! Thanks! 😃
Yeah, I'm one of those cheap bastards you mentioned. 😬
Happy holidays! And stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Damn this is solid piece of hardware, good quality only drawback are those cables outside :x 120usd it's to much but if they price it around 80-90 I wouldn't even look at other brand company modules.
It seems every ExpressLRS module has one or more down sides. Like the wires sticking out
Great video 😁
Great review, been wondering about this module. Your RF Power meter was set to 900Mhz BTW. I'm starting to think I might just build my own JR bay module. I've been liking my BetaFPV Lite module, although fairly annoyed that the Wifi and Bluetooth doesn't work on it, but not a huge deal breaker, but annoying.
Oh dang! You're right. That's silly. I'll double check.
And the joystick and the USB only works with uniquely ultra slim cords because it's so recessed. Just a bad design! I bet they get it right with the V2. If you know BetaFPV, they always come out with V2 and V3 models to fix their F ups! It's just sad they have to be in such a hurry that they don't fix their product first, before releasing the "BETA" product that is in their name! Lol 🥴😳
Hello Joshua, I have the same problem with the Tx oled micro from betafpv. I upgraded with firmware version 2.0.0 and the joystick is not working. Another thing that does not work correctly is the dynamic power when you turn me on it makes telemetry losses when it goes up or down in power. I tested on two Flywoo receivers (EL24E and EL24P). Forced to switch to fixed power to no longer have the problem. Very disappointed with the expressLRS 2.0.0 firmware.
Could you test the real power output of the Ghost (and Tracer) and if it maintain the power all along?!
When flashing elrs to v2, can I follow the old elrs videos that flashes in the old version of elrs?
16sz minimum Futaba that supports crsf. But even as a 16sz owner, this price kinda stings. For starters, most fpv pilots that fly Futaba will have an Opentx radio as a 2nd driver so the screen may not be as valuable as one might think. Also, white?!
For $135 this seems pretty janky.
It dropped from £98.70 to £48 on one of fpv retailers in UK
Hi joshua please can you tell me whats the best jumper with elrs for rc boat bait ....im confused ....i found that there is different modeles....jp4in1...tpro ...elrs internel.....😇
With a radiolink the signal disapear in 50 meter
Just FYI on the Futaba compatibility. The T14SG is NOT comparable with CSRF (I know, I have one). The 16SZ, 18SZ and 16IZ are, with the correct firmware. EDIT; T12K is also an option.
I have a futaba t12k and it shows csrf in the Linking menu. It should support elrs right
@@sprokkel30 yes, I believe so
Hmm this one looks interesting!
To be accurate, BetaFPV micro tx IS supported in ELRS 2.0 and is in the pull down menu. No pull request required. I, personally, wouldn't spend that amount on a module. That being said, I also wouldn't trust my several thousand dollar models to ELRS...yet. Crossfire...maybe.
Bold prediction for the Thor module as one brand from the past comes to mind: Betacord.. (showing my age there)
Hi joshua, i got a rx ep1, and tried to flash via wifi, and kinda brick it, i soldered bot ground pads but i cant manage to flash it, any solutions
I have this module paired with the TX16S MKII MAX PRO Lumenier Edition and was trying out 500mw today and at the end of my first pack it failsafed on me less than 200 ft away, flew my next pack at 250mw and cruised around for 7 minutes and no failsafe. Does it require an external power source to use 500mw and the 1 watt settings? I did some testing in my house last night and on 1 watt without a lipo plugged into the module if failsafes quite quickly (even being right next to the rx). With a lipo plugged into the module (only 2S) it doesn't failsafe at 1 watt. Don't know if this is by design or if I have a faulty module.
Does that fan have an air in and out? I guessing the out was the vent on the side?
Just got Happymodel TX24 Pro - Totally solid and very good quality and 1 watt. $120 - NO WAY!!!
I happen to be one of the rare guys who use spectrum with my Crossfire full size module. I have been using them for many years for helis and just like them. Can I really use this with my Spectrum radio with the serial port like I do with Crossfire? I know you said so but just haven't really been able to find anything online about it.
Flashing elrs on a frsky r9m
Wouldn't that do the job, but also have decent build quality
On configurator v1.3.2 , I cannot see that option pull down for the Axis Thor module
great vid
You should make a video about elrs on spi quads. The setup there is a bit different and with elrs 2.0 i had quite a few problems on my betafpv meteor 85, especially with smartaudio. The discord was helpful but i still don't know what exactly is wrong.
I'm having issues on a mobula6 too. Tried to upgrade my happymodel TX to elrs 2.0 an I think I might have bricked it or something. No response when I execute Lua script
@@3dprintingworld756 For me it came with 4 (i think) UART Ports, after the update and reloading the dump i had 3. I then loaded the hex provided by betafpv with the stock dump and set the elrs uid (key phrase). Then i flashed my module with elrs 1.2.1. After that everything worked fine.
First things first: I would definitely put my weed in there. Definitely.
Secoond: I might actually get this. I am currently using a TX16S like a half decent second controller. The thing is that I have an old DX6i and I've seen a video where someone added a crossfire to a DX6i (Check Mikebfpv's channel for details, he has a good video walkthrough). So it's something I may consider. That said, I could get a cheap Zorro with the ELRS module for less. The DX6i was my first radio and I'd like to breathe some new life into it, but I'm not overly sentimental. What do you think Joshua?
so i watched this vid the 5th time and noticed you mentioned the hidden spot i used it for that reason and just noticed you said the same thing hahaha
14:40 Are you me? The worst is I'll take my nice iFix it bits out to use on my trashy pocket screwdriver that I got as a freebe from SeeMe CNC.
those cheap LoRa chips are pretty reliable, they're in all the power meters all over the country.
Currently i fly namimno v2. Still ordered this one. I crash a lot, so price for something that will not hit the concrete at 60mph is not a big deal in this hobby.
is this better then the Namimno in range and quality?
NEED HELP! I have the original QX7, will this work without moding my radio. Or will any of the express LRS module work. Or would it be better to flash my R9 module to Express LRS and 4 recovers that I haven't even used because of all of the jumping around with all the dang downloading to get it to the telemetry to show right....i just won't to fly and haven't for over 6 months because of pain in the butt the R9 crap was and prob still is!
if you put EdgeTX on your qX7 you wont need to do the telemetry lost chip mod.
RF power meter was set to 900MHz instead of 2.4GHz JB
Please check the pinned comment.
It is very strange how JB had such a hard review on the BetaFPV module and such a soft review on this one!
Imagine his comments if the BetaFPV module did not work (OLED config) when connected to the radio, if to use that screen you had to disconnect from the radio and use a xt30 power on it!
Anyway, very strange!
The reason the menu wasn't working is that my arm switch was in the "armed" position and the module disables the joystick when it thinks the quad is armed. There was nothing defective about the module. I didn't hammer the module over this because my gut feeling (which turned out to be right) was that the module's behavior was intentional and correct, because I knew that Axis had worked closely with ELRS devs on the product. I only got clarification on this after the video released, and am getting the correction out there now. If I had hammered the module over this, it would have been a mistake since it was my own lack of knowledge that was the problem, not the module's design. On the other hand, my criticism of the BetaFPV module was, and is, completely valid.
@@JDDupuy The way to make money on YT is to have integrity and make content that viewers value. Selling out to manufacturers to get free product is a loser's game and I don't play it. Even if I was motivated purely by money, I can't pay rent and buy food with free product. And a free module here or a quadcopter there is not enough to actually live off of. The only people who can afford to sell out for free product are people who do YT as a side-hobby and keep a day job to pay the bills.
@@JoshuaBardwell thank you for your return! One big complain you had over the BetaFPV module was that while working on the OLED screen the receiver got in Failsafe. In this case if the quad is armed are you able to use the OLED screen on the BetaFPV module, or does it has the same Safety? If so the problem regarding failsafe would not be a problem, or at least a much smaller one!
You can change options on the AxisFlying module OLED menu while the link stays intact.
OMG $100 for the Jumper T Pro 1 watt internal elrs and the Jumper mini ELSR reciever for $11 easy setup you cannot lose range this is a game changer i almost stop flying it was so boring now flying over a mile away and the rssi stays at 99 I went as far as my battery would take me it never dropped below 96 its really incredible my tx800 speedy vtx is awesome hits over 900mw very little static miles away up high line of site

Can anyone tell me what brand of tape JB is using at 3:01? It looks the same as what Flywoo uses to hold motor wires to the carbon but I can’t figure out what it is. Thanks!
It's called cloth tape amzn.to/3qpXMw7

Thanks Joshua. Let's say I want the best performance transmitter module (best penetration, best range, low latency) for paid cinewhooping jobs. Let's assume the cost doesn't matter. Would you choose this or choose crossfire?

Just a warning, I bricked when downgrading from 3.0.1 to 2.5.1., maybe just a one off problem?
I may have missed something but I don't understand why those wires are outside the case. Nor do I understand why there are two pieces to this module nor do I understand why they left a big open tray in it despite having to have two large pieces for it.
Those external wires kill it for me. Those wires seem to me to be the obvious thing that will fail first. And I still don't even know why they're there.

v2.0 has autopower... That's awesome
I want to put an ELRS tx module in my Taranis QX7 (specifically namimno), does anyone know if I need to do a hardware mood like with crossfire?
The best advice is to switch to EdgeTX then enable OneBit mode in the Hardware screen. This fixes the problem in software and avoids the inverter mod issue for most people.

I just want to know the power is there if i need it
5 watt video to match the elrs at 1watt
They make 4-6watt VTX's for planes...too big for a normal 5" frame, but they typically have a large heatsink and fan. (you're supposed to have a HAM over 1watt ;)
do this or any other ELRS module with a FCC id on it?
Not one. And likely there never will be.
it appears that any 2.4ghz elrs module will talk to any 2.4ghz elrs Rx irrespective of manufacturer as its the firmware thats important so heres my question, Will an R9M running elrs talk to any 868/915mhz Rx running elrs or is there something different when running it on the R9M? i have a bunch of R9 Slim+ OTA Rx's but if i was opened up to other brand receivers then not migrating my R9 to elrs would just be stupid!
Any ELRS module can talk to any ELRS receiver as long as they use the same frequency band (2.4 vs. 900 vs. 868).

You’ll be glad you did because the micro world seems to be going that way. ExpressLRS SPI works great, death to FrSky.
If you already have Crossfire.. why do you need this too? I always felt that the stunning low price point of ELRS was arguably its greatest asset. I honestly wouldn't encourage them by paying exorbitant amounts. If you must have a good quality ELRS module, I think the Immersion RC ELRS flashed Ghost module is the better option.

Well, back when I bought into the crossfire ecosystem over 5 years ago...the TBS module for my QX7 was $100. Being in the world now, that price seems right for quality. It does seem crazy high for ExpressLRS....but perspective
I am sure that came with a jar of Vaseline did it not?
That wire is definitely soo much off! Why not make a magnetic or spring like connectors at the back?
Also they left the empty bay inside with storage box, and moved all extronics outside, inappropriate space usage...
And price is soo off :( im sure betafpv or namimno will bring their quality to the level within several month and it will be fine
Like buying. A Cadillac with a Chevy motor ? Ha, many years ago, I worked for a radio control manufacturer. The mark up on such units was about 900% , may have been higher. So are you going to pay too much for your whistle? Yes you are ...
Chris Rosser approves if your black tape. 👍
Yaaas, let's go! This overpriced ELRS module would be a perfect match with the overpriced Digiview/Android box. Woot!
I was just thinking I could by a radio with built in express elrs for around the same price
Price raised to $139 now?!!! One good review and they raise the price?!!!
No. That's the price with included receiver.
Just because it's expensive doesn't necessarily mean it's a good piece of kit! You'd certainly hope so, but no guarantee about that. And no, I don't want that module hanging off the back of my radio. Especially with that tacky wire!
My Crossfire V2 module sits flush with no tack on second piece. Why does it even need that hang on second piece when the BetaFPV and Happymodel modules sit flush with the back of radios? Just for that 1/10th of 1 percent of people who own Futaba and Spectrum? The hell with that!
I complain, but I'm stopping right now, because there's no friggin' way I'm paying $57 more than the retail price of my Crossfire module for this unproven brand and quality. The reason why I bought Crossfire is because it's a proven ultra reliable, superb quality, long ago proven product. These guys are still rookies, and again high price doesn't guarantee anything as far as quality or performance. The Happymodel module costs $37 and I've heard nothing but high praise and great comments about it! It's been tested on quality test equipment and passed with flying colors! Plus, it sits flush with the back of my radio! 😉😎🤘
I think it goes without saying, "a poor man pays twice" but there is a point where the price for quality is so absurd that its not worth it! In this case I am not convinced this module is absurdly priced, so long as it is highly reliable, durable and will last!
Not enough room for my weed. 😉
the weed comment killed me! ahhahaha i love it! that alone will be the reason i buy one of these hahaha
So since you can’t change after connected to Rx. The idea of adding to a spectrum is meh.
WHY DO WE NEED EXTERNAL MODULE ?
A modern quad has you easily flying with $1k in the air. I'd so much spend 120 bucks on a reliable module that won't have my control link fail. In fact, I didn't consider ELRS for the sole reason there is no high quality hardware for it. This may change now... Just wish they would also bring a module that just works with open TX and doesn't have that clunky 2-part construction. Just like the CRSF micro TX.
this is exactly what I came here to say, need 100% reliable hardware
If you fly that much in the air, I'd suggest get DJI.
@@ZillionPrey CRSF FTW ;P
@@aphinion or that ^^
@@ZillionPrey i run analog quad and digital quads, all on crossfire. I own some DJI mavics for 90% of the work stuff, but the proper FPV quads are a whole level anove anything DJI makes. I'm not taking still 🤣
