I'm not musician but have been an avid jazz fan for a long time. I go back to Duke,Bird,Diz,Miles,Brownie and all the others.Yep I'm that old. In January 2022 I discovered Joan Chamorro and the San Andreau organization.i have become totally fascinated and addicted (in a good way) to their talent, dedication and charm.the young performers speak for thselves with their fantastic instrumental ability and vocal. alents . But I want to single out the maestro himself Joan Chamorro. What he has accomplished is staggering. He has molded so many youngsters into wonderful soloists and team players that it confounds imagination. Any parent knows that dealing with young people can be a bit of a task but he does it marvelously. In con clusion. I firmly feel Joan deserves international praise for his work with youth and contribution to music. Is their a Nobei or Pulitzer type award for this type of contribution to civilization? Does anyone agree with me?
The Count is ever so proud of these youngsters. The trumpet solo sounded a bit like Roy Eldridge, Ray Nance and Clark Terry all in one. OUTSTANDING AGAIN JOAN!!!
Neal Hefti and Count Basie would have been delighted that this standard is still being interpreted so excellently by this young ensemble more than 50 years after its creation, as if it had only been composed and arranged yesterday. 🎶👍
Sure! If Neul had to decide for the premiere performance between the Basie-Band and the SAJB, he would have dropped a coin a thousand times and afterwards had cancelled the presentation in deep frustration 😜 Cheers & 'njoy
As mentioned elsewhere - please do more than watch these great performances on RUclips. Please support these musicians by buying their music from whatever music app you prefer. I’ve been buying from the Apple Music store. The albums are usually mentioned in the show notes. There are different series some of them feature your favorite musician, others are compilations. Or you can buy single tracks such as this piece featured here on the album Jazzing 11. Because of covid all artists are facing great financial challenges. They need our support now more than ever.
I just discovered SAJB not quite a month ago. So far I've ordered 5 CD's. Have to admit I've ordered them from Amazon but now have found the jazztojazz webwite and will be ordering more from there.
@@stevesolomon2348 Thanks Steve. I wish I could buy more but being on a tight senior citizen’s budget I can only buy a few tracks. But appreciate fans like you doing something to help these terrific musicians.
I am amazed at the solid intonation of students, no matter how advanced the curriculum is! Very complex chording and perfect execution. And Alba, as usual, is excellent.
Great ~ many bands rush this classic piece . Joan is in control so SAJB stays relaxed. Alba's solo is elegant and perfectly timed with nice embellishments. ATOMIC !
This famous number sound easy to play, but it isn"t. The tempo is steady all the way from beginning to end. (orsom) and Alba plays the most beautiful solo you can emagine.
This was SO AMAZING. The kids play tight, and the trumpet player is so talented!!! This is one of my favorite Basie songs and this was an amazing performance!
WOW just blown away, brought tears to my eyes first heard this in 57 by Basie, these kids are beautiful and the leader has a pure soul, JUST BLOWN AWAY
Magnificat performance!! I believe Maestro Chamorro is the greatest musical director alive today. I'm so proud to have watched many of these multi-talented, student geniuses develop under his leadership. And he's produced hundreds of wonderful videos like this over his years with the SAJB. Thank you Maestro for all the beauty you have brought to us! You are a gift to the world of jazz!
Alba plays like an old PRO! Adding her beauty she is/Will be an International Star very soon as she also is gifted with a fantastic voice singing in different languages! And The group plays so perfect under The magician Joan Chamorro! Every number is executed like the best to be found! Fantastic!!
Joan, "Li'l Darlin'" is one of my favorite Count Basie Orchestra tunes and you guys did a great job with it, as usual!!! As for Alba, that young lady is so good!!! I said this many times before and I'll say it again; I could listen to her play that trumpet and/or sing all day long!!! 😊😊😊😊😊
I've gotta say that Alba is not just a great singer (No Moon at All), but blows such a great horn -- Trumpet and sax. What a talent!!! Thanks, Joan for bringing up all this talent.
I was educated in jazz from the sixties playing jazz guitar. I’m so impressed and delighted with the beautiful sounds of this orchestra and the talents of its young performers and its director Joan Chamorro! Thank you so much for brightening each day with your fine music. Hoping to catch you in person!! Steve from San Francisco
SAJB continues to amaze me. I keep thinking, "it can't get any better" - but it always does! This is so smooth and relaxed and harmonic, but so disciplined. Beautiful work from Alba, and nice to see so many young players coming up!
Esta hermosa orquesta integrada por talentosos jóvenes , es prueba inequívoca , que el jazz perdurará y jamás morira ....... buen trabajo Joan Chamorro .......gracias a todos ustedes.....
Wow!!! Great all around. I'm struck by: Alba's solo is very tasty and in the mood, Carla's guitar is wonderful with her harp-like licks, the band is in the groove with the full chords being totally focused for balance, great dynamics throughout, Dominique's piano-very tasty. Alba E's bari provides the "specific gravity" for the whole band. Great laid back style--beautifully interpreted by all. Sound and video---marvelous work laying this down. What a beautiful legacy for future listeners. Mr. Hefty would be impressed. Thank you.
This piece sounds very simple but it is actually very difficult for an ensemble to play well. Much precision and control required, especially for those staccato crotchets. Beautiful performance. Thank you very much.
Top bigband! Difficult to play. Big compliment! But the camera only got the wind section. Rhythm section, especially the guitar are most important, too! Special applause for my guitar colleague!
I just watched a college jazz ensemble do this number. Here, this collection of about half college-age players and the other half in the junior high to high school range just cuts them off at the knees: the tightness and fluidity creating the overall sound; the trumpet player, who doesn't even bother to take a bow for her solo. Such comparisons just increase the appreciation for what Joan has wrought. There are different versions of lyrics. Go with "Don't Dream of Anybody but Me" by Bobby Darin.
Simply delightful! My pops (lifelong musician) sure would have loved to hear you cats. Keep up the great music. You all are a blessing to the world. Shalom.
"Wow" The torch is most definitely carried, wonderfully played and a joy to hear you guys. I know "Uncle Bill" would very much approve, as would my father Harry Bence.
Lovely! One of my all-time favorite songs. Alba's mute solo is wonderful, but the true delight is Carla's arpeggios, especially the downward surprise. Made me giggle!
Ah! Thanks for pointing out the downward arpeggio. I totally missed it in the dozens of times I've listened to this one. I always wondered what Joan's surprise reaction was about.
@@NeilCarlsonNM I don't buy his "surprise" as they have rehearsed it plenty and this probably wasn't the first concert. IMHO, his performance is part of the game!
Wonderful arrangement and playing by the entire ensemble! Thank you, Professor Chamorro, for your efforts to promote, educate, and provide performance opportunities for these amazing young musicians!
Excellent job, one of my favorites of Basie's. Got to play this one time with Roy Eldridge when he came into the club where our band was playing. Beautiful memory. This band sounds great, sax section all breathing together, and Alba is outstanding. Excellent!

Unbelievable! It is one of the finest renditions of Li'l Darlin' I have ever heard- INCLUDING the Basie Band live several times! WOW!
I played this arrangement in college in 1966. It was probably my favorite piece I ever played as a trombonist. This really warms my heart.
Me too! Played this on tenor sax with the Manhattan College swing band in the late 60's.
