I don't eq my lcd2 closed. For some tracks I will drop the bass a couple db, but otherwise they are tuned great. The treble can be a tad hot on some tracks. There may be some unit variance as to why yours sound bad without eq?
I have the old version with the inverted V on the cups... Every time I try EQ them I loose that nice soundstage... They are great without EQ, especially after I changed the pads to some genuine leather ones.
