I cook for someone who has a sensitivity to most alliums. I have found I have been able to replicate a similar taste texture to onion with a combination of cumin and celery seed.
Sounds great!
I have allium allergy and I struggle with this things. Can you explain how many cumin and celery seed add for cooking? I mean the ratio, so it gonna be similar with onion.
And the last, what do you mean celery seed? Is it celery dry/flakes or it's actually seed that we usually plant it?
Please answer me. Thank you so much!
@M_Ulissi
Thank you! Will have to try. I have an allium sensitivity.
I can't eat onions or mist spices like cumin. So annoying.
Cooking chopped radish is also a great substitute. It will brown and turn sweet.
Thank you for such an informative video.
If you want to substitute hing you can do this by, 1 table spoon of olive oil, grate celery saute it and add fennel powder. If you want to use hing, great way to enhance flavour is, Oil, Mustard Seeds, peanuts, pinch of hing, turmeric and curry leaves. =)
Thanks for the recipe. Looks like a tasty combination.
Do you have any suggestions for replacements for gassy foods like cabbage, broccoli and such?
yap!...good for brahmacharyas thank you
Thank you for the tutorial I have learnt a lot , having IBS onion and garlic are my enemies so I am off to try your cabbage idea....
I hope it works for you.
Very valuable video !! Thanks alot from India
Asafoetida is considered equivalent to garlic, it is also tamasic! Leek is as well.
No asafoetida is not Tamasic satvik people surely use it
What a great video. I have lupus and have to eliminate garlic. I had no idea onions are so bad for us. Thank you.
Using very finely shredded napa cabbage stems with hing does the trick at my hse
I use fennel and buckchoy
Black salt also works for me! Nice video!
Yes. Black salt also has sulfuric compounds that mimic the taste of onions and garlic.
I guess I’ll be using black salt then
Jains and Brahmin cuisine is the go to for a strict vegetarian cuisine which while avoiding garli and onion, still is in more flavourful than most cuisines. Do give it a try. If u want to be a vegetarian Indian is the way to go. I know of many meat eaters from EstAsia and Europe who never turned back after adopting Indian vegetarian cuisine. They originally thought it was impossible to remain vegetarian through out one’s life as that would mean missing out on the flavourful cuisine that meat eating offers. Since then they have found that proper vegetarian cooking far outstrips any meat based cuisine in taste and flavour. U just need to know how to cook and u would find far more delicious flavour is possible through vegetarian cuisines than through the meat base ones.
What do jains use to replace the flavor of onion and garlic in their dishes?
The best thing I've discovered is to not replace onions just leave them out and try not to substitute with anything that tastes even remotely like a onion
Thank u..very much helpful for Jains..pls make such more videos...
Thanks 4 teaching me about hing
I love cooking following Ayurvedic sciences.
Thank You. May Heaven Bless you, abundantly.
U can checkout more Jain recipes which are free of onions, garlic, potatoes & underroots

Patakopi😪
Also hing tastes nothing like garlic or onion
Very good explanation and tips.... Thanks
Wow thats nice...Respect
Thanks, I subscribed, looking for more good food from you
Garlic blistered inside my mouth,, and probably 'burned' all the way thru. I could have drawn a map of my digestive system it burnt so bad
I use the white part of bok choy, rub it in Astofidea, quick saute in water or broth.. pretty close to onion/garlic for cooking
Thank you so so so so so so much Amazing tip for satvik lifestyle ❤ love you 😊
Thank you for the video 🙏
Does green onions and leek fall under the same nature as onion and garlic? Thanks
In Bangladesh the price of Onion is raising day by day, now its 3 dollars per kg .
What a shame!!
Wow thankyou
Asafoetida is also in the same league as onion and garlic. It is negative pranic. You shouldn't consume it.
Oh thanks for the info..
Yes true
A bit is ok
Exactly what I was thinking when she show it, it's almost same..
Someone said a little is ok? Then might as well consume garlic. 😅
@@user-zx1ii7vf2z Negative Pranic food takes away your life energy. It's diminishing our ability to perceive and dulls our nervous system. This food group contains stimulants and sedative foods. Nervous Stimulants like coffee, tea, processed sugars, induce mental restlessness and destroy stamina in the long run.
Interesting video
Thankyou😊
Fennel is the healthier texture alternative
This goes for onion powder too??right?
Asafoetida is also negative prana.
Astofidea gives the flavor, but bulk and texture of dish... Well I hope you have answers
The cabbage and celery will provide the texture.
@@HealthyHappynWise can asfotedea and the things also be used to replace garlic/onion flavor in raw dishes like chutneys, salads etc? I need a garlic/onion substitute for raw dishes as well
I took garlic for more than 4 days, felt depressed, and had to stop.
Physically allergic to garlic. Blisters in mouth, then burned all the way thru digestive system. They say intestines don't have nerve endings, but I could have drawn a picture of mine as the garlic burned its way.
Very grateful for substitute. Seems every recipe begins with chop onion and garlic saute
I stopped eating garlic , for a couple of years now. it upsets my stomach, causes pain and burning.
@@dianasthings729 what to eat instead of garlic
Thank you! I can't eat onions and garlic because of covid
What happen?
Same! Have you gotten your tastes back? I haven't been able to eat onion and garlic (and other things) for two years now :( What are your favorite alternatives for cooking without onion and garlic?
A lot of people who've had covid suffer from parosmia, which is a distorted sense of smell. For many, foods like onion and garlic have started to smell and taste horrible. The same has happened to me.@@shareecephus4023
Asafoetida is Not Satvik, it's stimulating so,
No No...
Yes, asafoetida is not sattvik. So if your goal is to only eat sattvic foods than it's not for you.
It’s better than eating onion and garlic because at least it can be offered to the supreme lord Krishna
@@Harshraj.sonu.1234
It's not really about what you eat,
It's about why you eat,
Eating for youself or eating to do something for other,
That way it doesn't really matter what to eat if you are able to serve the world (you are serving Krishna as well),
Eating or not eating Tamasic or satvik is the decision to make for your Mental well being...
Even people eating Meat have served the World Wonders at Times !
Forgive me for any Mistakes happened, it's just my way of seeing things.
Thanx,,,i hate onion with a vergence
You and me both.
very nice video. Do you also know by any chance how to replace salt in food and sugar in tea.
Sarcasm hahahaha. What she said is satvic way of cooking. If you don't want to follow, then don't watch, as simple as it is 😂
You can use rock salt instead of plain salt in food, and you can use jaggery or honey instead of sugar in tea. Hope this answers your question 😀
Thankyou
I love onions and garlic but my taste and smell changed since I had covid 1 year ago and they taste and smell awful now and it makes cooking very hard.
Have you tried "ciboulette"? I forgot the English word, just know the French word ^^.
I use it instead of onion and garlic and you can a faint herbal smell of onion emenating from it.
Give it a try and trust me you can totally live without garlic and onion.
The problem is that anything that smells and tastes like onion is problematic for people who suffer from a distorted sense of smell from covid. For example, I can't eat chives (ciboulette) either, because it still tastes like onion, and I haven't tried hing/asafoetida, but I imagine I won't be able to tolerate that either if it tastes like onions :(@@hellofellowhumanbeings

..... ma'am....
Cabbage causes me gas
It does for me too. Garlic and onions do the same. The combination in a soup that I consumed large quantities of, sent me to the Emergency room. Anything that ferments in the body creates the same effect. I love all of these things and now they are forever off the shopping list. :-(
So funny many from bangladesh has popped up here to complain price of onion.
I am confused. I like onions, mainly raw in my salad or less often in cooking. Not much garlic though, except occasionally, because especially when eaten raw it gives you a very bad breath which lasts for many hours. However, most videos and articles found in the internet, say that both of them are very beneficial to one's health and often recommend their daily consumption, mostly raw and in rather hefty quantities too. Now here is a video according to which they have "detrimental effects on your health" when consumed everyday. What should i believe ?
