Ken Kesey "The Grateful Dead are able to stroke a thing the way that just like the winds strokes the clouds until it attracts the lightning out of the ground". Well said !!
One of the coolest bands ever. One of the coolest authors ever. One of the coolest radio stations ever. In one of the coolest cities ever. Man I wish I could have been there.
This was simulcast on KQED in San Francisco that night. I watched the first hour or so with my Dad, who had only read about the Dead in the Chronicle and as far as I know had never really listened to them. I can't say he became a fan, because he didn't, but he appreciated where they were coming from and even paid a complement to Garcia's guitar playing. After an hour I wanted to hang out with my friends and left. Not sure I listened to the rest of the show.
We had a great time that night. Whoever painted the many pictures of past artists on the balcony...THANKS! I wish I could have helped do that. It was a nice touch. Thanks Bill Graham!
I was at Alpine when the overhead wood came falling down. My friend and I didn't have any idea since our eyes were closed. Opened our eyes and the entire section was empty except for us. Unhelpful neighbors we had apparently.
Too bad they weren't built all over and run by him. Could've kept camping, vending, partying going and kept uninvited/unwanted people out though undercover might still be present. Maybe tried random fields and ranches like mini-Woodstock runs until fame overcrowded it all. Already was well known scene before In the Dark but then exploded.
@@daBEAGLE1017 Yep. In the Book 'Living With The Dead' by Rock Scully and someone else he said Jerry wasn't doing China he was doing some kind of like Karachi(Pakistan) golden tar type of stuff. Kesey is high as shit, tripping his socks off. But charismatic, articulate, and brilliant as always. Outstanding

I remember watching this on KQED TV...awesome to relive it!
“We don’t know what we’re going to do” holy moly makes me rethink how it sounds when it’s played
Closing of Winterland is a great show.

They shared the stage with The Blues Brother's Band on this fine New Years Eve. All night show with breakfast served at dawn. Wish I were there.
Breakfast? A bagel maybe with cream cheese and ....not much else.
@@namcat53 better than nothing when you’re coming down
@@namcat53 I think it was bacon and eggs actually. If I’m remembering correctly.
@@aaronratesic4905 Not when we got there; a cold bagel and maybe orange juice..the opposite of the amazing Thanksgiving dinner inside.

The interviewer said he was lucky he was not here, hahahahaha CLASSIC!
“Chuck brought his cannon.”They fired it off during drums and Billy gave the “you missed” raise of the cap.
Bobby is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo high. Mickey of course is so there, that he puts the scare on folk sometimes, and the difference is hilarious.
It was the Blues Brothers and the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Belushi said it was the best time he ever had.
Excellent. First time I've seen this.
5:04 Glenn Lambert called Mickey Hart Phil Lesh ! He writes about this in his liner notes of “Closing of Winterland “ CD!
Close your eyes and listen to Bobby...he sound like Jimi.
Where are his cutoff shorts?
Ken Kesey is 'SKY HIGH' (period)
birth of shoreline amp!
i was thinking the same :D
Bill Graham please build us a great place for rock and roll.
Shoreline
Has anybody here ever read "the electric kool-aide acid test by Tom wolfe?" awesome book that makes you *realize* kesey is our brother.
Winterland was a GREAT VENUE to bands gig...
I was 3 days old.
Kesey put it well... "hard, bust-ass, rockin-roll labor!"
You need I good solid structure to handle the Phil bombs. It’s cool they got Paul Rudd to interview the band.
Is Bobby always wired
THE RED PHONES!!! Yes commissioner?
The seeds of Shoreline, no doubt.

well put Kesey
Is that Gary Lambert conducting interview next to Bob? Sounds exactly like him.
Close but no cigar. Glenn Lambert. I think he’s Gary’s brother. Both Lamberts helped write the liner notes in the “Closing of Winterland” CD set.
I wonder if it was this interview that inspired Bill Graham to build Shoreline Amphitheatre a decade later.
“Big enough to really ice somebody”
That was great!! Mickey Hart looks like Freddie Mercury.....
Acoustical Snake pit! Classic Bobby. Rock Star.
bob weir is funny as shit
The thunder machine was a bust. The question is...who is the beautiful woman at 8:11? I'm sure you'd remember her. All the best..
Hahaha, when I saw 8:11 I thought to myself, “I bet that guy is still bragging about this night to his buddies, I know I would!!!” Lol
yeah....our memories are somewhat hazy as well.lol

Where do you THINK??
can you believe this guy interviewing weir with the squarest haircut ever
Micky Hart wears a scarf like that and the interviewer is square?
I think Bob is dosed.
He is always like that
He’s really high on good cocaine.
His face frozen on Iwhat iwould imagine the best cocaine on the planet at the time.
Bob was the only one not spun monkey. Definitely flying on that good coke.
and sure enough Bobo built Shoreline Amphitheater
Those interview guys had little clue how to interact with and help bring out the best in them.
