    This was such a treat for me. Funny story and I absolutely cannot verify it. Back in the heyday of fish forums, I interacted with a fish keeper who had such a wealth of knowledge but was very humble, maybe even a little shy about sharing what he knew. I am 98% sure it was Lucas Bretz. The forum members kept encouraging him to post and share. More than a dozen years went by, I got out and back into the hobby. I kept hearing about this amazing breeder, "Lucas." Having heard him today, you cannot convince me it wasn't Lucas Bretz because his demeanor and knowledge match what I remember from the forums. Thank you, Alex and Lucas for the walk down memory lane where I learned most of what I know about natural planted aquariums.👍

      That is cool, thanks for sharing this story. Because that was me in the forum days as well. I used to do a lot on TPT, APC, and MFK forums. This was before FB even existed. Then the forums all sold to corporates and wasn’t the same. Everybody started moving to FB. But the forums are where I got my biggest start of planted aquariums which allowed me to collect plants from all over the world. Thanks again for sharing this comment!

    Many years ago while living in Florida, I had the great pleasure of visiting a off the beaten path, fish shop. It was all salt water, but I believe this eldery gentleman had the same mindset as this. His tanks looked 'dirty' to me, and I remember talking to him about it. He said to me, "a clean tank isn't a healthy tank". That was like 50 years ago now. Anyhow, his tanks looked exactly like these! I also remember he had some beautiful Seahorses, that he refused to sell to anyone. At that time it was very difficult to feed and keep them alive and healthy, and that's why he never sold them. I'm quite sure a lot of things have changed in that respect, in 50 years, but I did so admire him for his convictions. Thank you Alex, for sharing Lucas's amazing fish room. I've gone over and subscribed to his channel as well.

    Kind of a plant nerd here: Your guess of those air plants being "Spanish moss" was actually very close! "Spanish moss" is not a moss at all, it's an air plant (Tillandsia usneoides). The plants he's growing there seem to be Tillandsia recurvata (aka "ball moss"), which look very, very similar but grow in clumps instead of chains.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  8 месяцев назад

      I haven't tried it, but I'd be hesitant to put more than a tiny little piece in. Perhaps some antibiotic stain of penicillin would grow? But i don't know that it would be a good thing to be dosing the fish with penicillin mold / low dose antibiotics all day... even if it did take off. Worst case, it may spoil the water with organic debris, like over feeding does. This is all a total guess. If you do try it, let me know what unfolds please

      The spade-like shape and long stems coming up from substrate make me think of water lily (nymphea?) but the leaves are small and entirely green. 🤔

      I’m thinking maybe that plant is Brazilian Pennywort (Hydrocotyle leucocephala) … but I’ve been out of hobby for >10 years so very rusty on plant id’s.
