Hikers Paradise - A pictorial story from a 5 day trek in Norway and Sweden

- In the summer of 2012 I did a 5 day wild camping hike in the border area between Norway and Sweden in the high north. This is a beautiful Arctic landscape with trails going through some stunning mountain areas. In my opinion it is one the best areas for hiking in the north with easy trails to follow, open landscapes, stunning mountains and green open plains. This is a place far from the madding crowd and you will not be sorry for visiting:) If you want to have one wild amazing wild camping adventure in Norway or Sweden, then you should consider this area.
I started the trip outside Narvik, Norway, then gradually crossed into Sweden where I reached the famous Kungsleden hiking trail. I followed it north to the village Abisko in Sweden before I headed back to Norway and reached my destination at the lake Altevatn. At that time I did not use a video camera, so this is a pictorial story showing my trip as a slide-show:)

I used a tent (Hilleberg Akto) on my trip, but there is a large number of huts available for trekkers in the area that can be used for a small fee. With proper planning it is possible to walk from hut to hut in this area if tenting is not for you! Some of the huts can be seen in the slide-show!

From Wikipedia about Kungsleden: Kungsleden runs for about 440 kilometres (270 mi) between Abisko in the north and Hemavan in the south. The trail is well-marked and many sections are well equipped and maintained by the Countyboard of Norrbotten (Länsstyrelsen i Norrbotten), with plank walkways covering swampy or rocky ground. However, other sections, further from the trailheads, are eroded and rocky, increasing the difficulty of hiking. There are bridges across non-fordable streams and during the summer season lakes and rivers could be crossed either with rowing boats provided by Countyboard of Norrbotten or STF or by taking a local charter boat. The winter trail takes a somewhat different course in locations where it runs over swamps or lakes that can not be negotiated in summer.
The trail is separated in four portions-each representing approximately one week of hiking. The most popular part is by far the northernmost-between Abisko and Kebnekaise. The season, when the huts are open, usually runs between mid-June and the end of September, rowing boats are usually in place at the end of June or beginning of July, but the weather can be very treacherous, including late or early snow. The winter season runs from mid-February to the end of April.

The scenery changes so much towards the end of the video, much more vibrant and green, its almost like you have walked across winter into spring! ❤👍🏕
Well noticed! Those changes are caused by a drop in alltitude at the end of the Kungsleden trail where you decend into a sheltered valley (almost like Rivendell) below the tree line. Due to the climate a change in alltitude of just 100 meters can make a big difference to the vegetation here in the north!

This wilderness is surprisingly accessible with some planning, so you and Kat should think about exploring this area one fine summer (I did not mention it; but the highest mountain in Sweden , Kebnekaise, is in the neighborhood). Along the trails there are huts and bothys that can be used for sleeping if you pay a small fee. Or you can get a nice tent and try a bit of wild camping:-)

The design of bridges depends on which side of the border you are hiking. They tend to be more elaborate on the Swedish side. And you are right - on that trip the weather was ok most of the time:)

Thanks for a kind comment. The weather was between 6 an 12 degrees Celsius - that is typical for late summer. And not too much wind, but in the mountains here you never knows when it will blow!
