The funny thing about Kaede is that they actually dialed her up a ton in the anime, both physically (chest size) and in terms of make up. But honestly, what I think I notice about their work is that they don't seem to go for 'cheap' junk tropes, they lean into their content with a more mature tone. Onimai very easily could have had a way more degenerate tone, but they keep the tone respectful and focused instead of going for cheap "oh look how close we can get to lewd stuff". It's like with mushoku, a lot of studios would turn a lot of situations into lewd jokes, while BIND immediately redirects things to be about damage to relationships or repercussions of making choices thoughtlessly. The content becomes more about thoughtfulness and understanding than the 'specifics' of the situation. A good example is where many shows have some low quality joke about seeing a girls panties and her getting upset, mushoku turns the main characters embarrassing 'treasure' from Roxy into a story about how sometimes anything that reminds us of our relationships can be treasured, even if it's not entirely appropriate, whether it's a headband from your brother or panties, both are reminders that you care about someone.
as a trans woman i loved onimai so much because i would give a lot to return to a younger life in my preferred body and actually be able to enjoy myself instead of hating my body more over time as i grew. i wish more anime expressed gender identity more openly and not playing it off as gross or a joke
One thing I find really great about this series and something I totally wasn't expecting was Midori having no romantic interest in her brother whatsoever. The character dynamics and the "normalcy" of their interactions is honestly so refreshing.
even without all the mini weird parts, its wholesome, and idc if everyone hates it, i absolutely love this show. so wholesome, cute, made me smile so much. awesome show
Onimai is pure comedy, the show is enjoyable as it shows Mahiro trying to change him self and finally being able to turn his life around (a second chance?) and make some friends, something he never did before.
I just love the art direction they were going for it has alot of characters and isnt another copy pasted looking anime, and I want to just give them that credit I really hope theres a second season.
Simillar to you I went in with little to no expectations for this show and was pleasantly suprised by it. A wholesome and slightly strange goofy story about personal growth but also about how hikkikimori can affect everyone around them.
i dunno if you will read this. but you gained another sub. One thing i have to admit, after literally finishing onimai a few minutes ago, is that. the series is fairly realistic in despicting someone who, quite (literally) gave up on life. someone who was a Hikkikomori to the extreme of not knowing where his parents went, and only lives with his sister. And even having that one familiar that cares about him, you can really tell that Mahiro was at the edge of suicide at any moment if it wasnt for his sister. Then, things started to change around, having to take care for himself, for his look, being careful with his (new) fragile body, adapting to new clothes and ways of acting around, and even leaving his home after just a while. You can question the sister way of getting him out of his room, yes, but you can´t deny that, technically, saved his brother. and gave him up, not only a new chance to live, but also a new way to see things, live, adapt, and most important, live a moment of his live that he lost becouse of loneliness and being a Hikkikomori. he his lucky to have such a caring sister that not only guided him, but also helped him out when he needed. and he showed his grattituded later, then he gained friends, started Elementary school again becouse he is 14-15 again. an so. The relationship of brothers between Mahiro and Mihari is probably the most wholesome i saw in anime in A LONG TIME. and that is a lot coming from a "ECHHI" series/manga, becouse in other ones like Date a live, to love ru, Highschool XDxD and more the "siblings" relationship always ends in some way of incest in one way or another. but, here is the complete opposite. two "sisters" now, who truly love and care for eachother.
Considering that there are many young men in Japan who are wasting away living as shut-ins aka hikikomori, and their aging parents desperately trying to help their sons, it comes as no surprise that Onimai tries to tackle this societal problem. And I think Onimai has done it wonderfully. I hope that people who are struggling with living as shut-ins can find meaning and purpose after watching Onimai.
This is one of my top anime of the season. The wholesomeness of it makes it a great "feel good" show. At episode 2, I realized that, if not for the gender bend premise, this show could easily have been just a coming of age story of a tomboy going through puberty, though that would remove some of the gags. It deals with the developments girls go through accurately and sensitively.
This anime is pure quality production Amazing songs and specially the last episode was phenomenal people should watch this, this anime is so warming to watch
You'd think anyone whos watched their fair share of anime wouldn't judge one based off premise alone, I was in the same boat lumping this together with "the dog show" but I was pleasantly surprised with how wholesome it really was.
I try and stay fair to things I take a look at, though any time the synopsis describes the MC as a degenerate I brace for the worst, thankfully this one turned out well

I'm gonna keep it honest, this "controversial" show is Adorable, its existence isn't an issue. I just actively dislike the main fandom of this show because it's clear that a majority of them are just.. degenerates.
I really agree.. I saw this anime in RUclips while just scrolling.. I felt like I wanna watch it because of the cute characters and the potential wholesome moments.. I was surprised when I saw some weird moments, but I just laughed and shook it off.. If anything, the whole anime helped me feel a bit happier, because I never looked myself as a worthy person or someone useful or someone dependable.. This anime just brought a smile to my face, and had so many wholesome and funny moments.. This is one of the shows that just made me say “relatable.”
Really great take on the Onimai anime m8! I think we all knew the moment the trailer dropped for this anime that the shit storm following its release was gonna be pretty crazy but its good to see that some people can look past some of the more "controversial" (if you can even call it that) parts of the series and pull a heart warming narrative from it. It really is an interesting story of rehabilitation when you take into account Mahiro's reasoning for being a shut in and how his sister's presence in his life has served to both put him down but in the end bring him up after her experiment. Absolutely loved the way you crafted your piece on the series, great work! :D
I’m a year and a half late but we ball (i rewatched the anime 5 times and reread both the manga and the anthology comic 3 times, in the span of 3 months)
Silly filthy manga reader here and let me just say that this video was pretty good it supported a lot of what i feel about the anime and its source material, but as a manga reader I wanted to help add some context to a lot of things on this adaptation. For starters, if you haven't already read the manga I highly recommend it. It's super fun and quite different from the anime. I'd recommend reading it from the start since there's a lot of cut content from the anime in the manga. Another point of note is that the manga was originally a self published webcomic posted by Nekotofu on Twitter before being picked up by a comic publisher about 10 chapters in, so the first 10 or so chapters are very disconnected and experimental (this is where most of the cut content is). The odd pacing is fine and it still manages to be fun and entertaining, but it really suffers from pilot syndrome where a lot of the characters feel off or different from their final selves before Nekotofu finds their footing and figures everything out. Another thing I will say is that I will be referring to Mahiro as a he in this, especially when discussing manga Mahiro since he still strongly identifies as male even up to current chapters (the manga is still ongoing so things may change). I hope you can understand this decision. Okay, with that out of the way, let me begin. I will say it outright, the anime is a far superior product to the manga is basically every aspect (not to say that the manga is bad, it's just that the anime is better). What really drives home the anime as the better product in the end is the emotional core. Obviously the betting pacing and characters at the beginning is an improvement, but the manga lacks a very solid emotional core that the anime has. The hotspring arc, the most emotionally charged moment in the anime, and the moment that showed Mahiro's biggest moment of growth was reduced to just another quick joke. A funny joke, but a joke none the less. It's incredible how wildly different tonally the anime is from the manga. Where the anime has these beautifully directed sequences that bring you to tears and fill you with indescribable feelings, the manga is far more basic and toned down, it's not a bad thing, it's just different. The manga feels far more comfy and relaxed. This is due in part to the fact that it has a lot more time to work with. Characters are another thing, Kaede is far more toned down too. She's still the silly wholesome gal that we know and love, but her fashionista personality is far more subtle and her proportions are greatly reduced. Mahiro's personality is also slightly different in the anime. In the manga he's way more toxic and macho than he is in the anime. He's manipulative, deceitful, full of himself, and very degenerate. These aspects work well, but can also be a bit overbearing at times, so I'm glad they toned it down in the anime. Asahi gets plenty of time to shine and has become my favorite character in the whole manga. She's got this playful and boundless energy for absolutely everything. There's not a thought between those eyes and I love her. The incontinence counter continues to rise (up to 10 by this point, 15 if you count the anthology collection), it's almost a little concerning at this point but whatever. The artstyle is also pretty subdued compared to the anime. It's still adorable and very expensive. It fits the static nature of comic format far more compared to animation so it's good. Mihari and Mahiro's relationship never develops into anything beyond just a fun and wholesome familial bond, in fact, the manga even actively mocks the audience at times for assuming incest things are happening. Even small characters like Nemu (the blue haired sleepy girl) and Minato and Yuuta (the two boys that Mahiro talks about games with) get time to shine. Nemu is another gamer girl like Mahiro and they end up becoming close friends and even party members in an MMO. Minato and Yuuta also come to share a deep bond with Mahiro due to their shared interests. Minato and Yuuta also have such a fun and endearing bromance it's great. Finally, one of the most important characters in the story is currently a manga only character, she actually gets introduced the chapter after the anime leaves off and is in the end credits and final splash screen of the last episode. Nayuta is, I won't go into a lot of detail to avoid spoilers, but she shares a very special relationship with Mahiro which also aids in silly and fun hijinks, if there's any reason to read the manga, Nayuta would absolutely be it, she's the only one of the seven main characters that's still manga only. The manga also has other little side characters. Asahi's older brother, Nayuta's older sister, and even Mama Oyama herself makes some appearances. Anyway, I've yapped on enough for a comment that'll probably never get seen. If you do see this, hi.
I absolutely love this anime!! I thought it was going to be the typical pervy one full of fanservice, but I was very pleasently surprised!! Any "awkward" shots are taken in an unforced natural setting without being exaggerated, the relationship between the siblings is really cute and wholesome, the friendship she develops in her quartet is fantastic, Mahiru is very respectful of her new friends and at the same time interracts with them on a very natural level when there are situations that other animes would dive head first into to perv out. Even little things I found really good, like they buy swimsuits, and I thought we would get the typical beach episode full of sexy shots, but it never happened, and it didn't feel missing at all, or things like when she gets her first period, it's brought up as being something natural that happens, she sorts herself out nthanks to her sister, and that's it, no stupid going into it in weird ways. Even subtle things like the length of the skirts for the girls at school, which was realistic, totally non pervy, and they look cute in their uniforms. The last episode is very much a soul search episode which was very good, and it wasn't taken lightly or haphazardly. It's really just a beautiful SOL with a big twist, that adds in a coming of age aspect by changing Mahiru's age as well as sex. I can't wait for a second season, and I hope it keeps with the reliance on storytelling and the wholesome siblingship and friendship they all have.
Watched this after seeing a funny clip not knowing what anime it was. Its good. Normally dont like this sort of premise but decided to give it a shot anyway and dont regret it in the slighest. Very wholesome. Good humor. If you need a pallet cleanser like I did (just done watching Beserk) I can recommend this series if you dont mind slice of life shows.
most reviews i've seen have only watched up to the third episode anyways, which is where it fully strays from physical changes and more into social and emotional stuff and to be fair, i was one of those people for a small time. i took a break after episode 2 because it just felt awkward. i do love mahiro's comments when the anime is clearly trying to stray from bad stuff, like 'everywhere i look is a minefield' or something along those lines
I had no plans to watch this series. It just didn’t catch my interest… but then I checked out the first few episodes, and I was hooked. It is such a cute show. I love seeing Mahiro slowly change throughout the series, and I love seeing Mahiro and Mihari slowly become closer. The side characters are fun, and the show overall was a really nice/fun time. I will definitely be checking out the manga. :)
This season at first felt dry. I didn't think I'd like anything this round but I ended up in a similar experience as you where two of the shows I thought I'd dislike earned positive reputations. For me it was Onimai and that 80k gold isekai. For Onimai getting past the loli fan service took a little work but was worth it and for the isekai getting past a boring episode 1+2 was worth it. Onimai is definitely a top 10 SOL, perhaps the best SOL this year
A lot of stuff I was looking forward to most this season ended up with issues so I'm glad this was able to fill a bit of a void in that regard. BOFURI and Kubo got hit with delays and as a novel reader for Angel Next Door, I can't say the adaptation was very good. So ONIMAI being good was a welcome surprise.
I watched Onimai for it’s premise. Episode 1 surprised me, but I stuck with it. I stopped watching it around episode 2 or 3 and didn’t return to it until around a couple months later. I cannot describe how much I missed out. This might be my favorite anime of all time. Sadly I can’t recommend it to anyone, especially because where I live. That stuff is actively trying to be stopped. Most people judge it by episode 1, the premise, or some random images. So much better than fan service.
Tbh this show has been mostly "trans-fem wish fulfillment" for me. I find it very wholesome for that reason. A lot of people just don't have an identity until they realize they're trans and after that some things just click into place for them. Of course this can require a bit of a lifestyle change and it's always nice to have some friends who will do basic things like "teach you how to take care of your hair", or "take you shopping" Mahiro clearly enjoys these facets of their new identity and I don't think it's unreasonable to say they are trans.
I tried to stay gender neutral in the script generally for this reason in a way. Mahiro seems to teeter on the edge of what they want to do going forward so waiting on something more concrete, which will surely be addressed at some point
@@danyul- for sure, it doesn't necessarily have to be transfem, just the idea that an alternative gender expression might help someone to do better in life.
Onimai is very wholesome, the only part where it might be the problem is the fan service and some lewd scenes, but the character developments of the show is amazingly written And the atmosphere of the episodes shows the mood really well, this is why I love the show it’s so well drawn and scripted
now that the anime finished i`m realising just how good this show is. I`ve started reading the manga now and the anime made a lot of changes that really make it worth experiencing both. Overall i like the anime`s approach more, especially since it restructures the story to end on the satisfying note that it did. I really hope we`ll get a second season of this. The fluff is strong with this one
I'm so happy there is actually some good reception over here in the West. It gives some hope we're not all pathetic PC dogs that only read the synopsis and the genre "genderbend", decide the anime must be transphobic and filled with pedophilia and leave a bad review based on nothing (case in point, the three bad reviews on MAL that are showcased by people who say they haven't even watched beyond episode one). This anime 100% deserves a full second season! It's so cute, endearing and fun! The characters are just perfect and so adorable, not to mention relatable!
Same here i also thought i might drop this anime but after watching the first episode it's amazing with each and every episodes it becomes better and the final episode was so good. The character development of mashiro was very good and the brother sister dynamics was realistic . It was my second most favourite anime during that season only below The Magical revolution of the Reincarnation Princess and Genius young lady ❤.

How does Rudy atone for sodomizing a child as a 45 year old man? (episode 6 about 7:30 minutes in) I dropped at that point.
as a trans woman i loved onimai so much because i would give a lot to return to a younger life in my preferred body and actually be able to enjoy myself instead of hating my body more over time as i grew. i wish more anime expressed gender identity more openly and not playing it off as gross or a joke
The animation is surprisingly well done, especially in the end sequence. Very good, wholesome and funny slice-of-life.
0:48 there is an imposter in her eyes!
I hate how the internet taught me in *explicit* detail how that transformation might have worked.
Do go into more detail about this.
elaborate, child of man
One thing I find really great about this series and something I totally wasn't expecting was Midori having no romantic interest in her brother whatsoever. The character dynamics and the "normalcy" of their interactions is honestly so refreshing.
even without all the mini weird parts, its wholesome, and idc if everyone hates it, i absolutely love this show. so wholesome, cute, made me smile so much. awesome show
onimai cracked my egg
Same haha
This anime is probably one of the ones I've enjoyed the most recent. If you can look past the promise the story is actually really sweet.
Onimai is pure comedy, the show is enjoyable as it shows Mahiro trying to change him self and finally being able to turn his life around (a second chance?) and make some friends, something he never did before.
i'd say a little more slice of life than comedy
-unlike nichijou, more of a slice of "what" instead of slice of life-
ONIMAI is amazing, kinda even motivating.
I just love the art direction they were going for it has alot of characters and isnt another copy pasted looking anime, and I want to just give them that credit I really hope theres a second season.
Fr, first time I've seen light colors used for such a GOOD aesthetic.
they cooked
onimai is a god damn masterpiece
every episode is an accomplishment in themselves
I will and did read this 👍
are you good now? Do you have daily routines?
I hope Onimai season 2 is coming soon
If you actually had eyes for good animation quality, Onimai is pretty outstanding. It's the quality you'd normally see in movie level.
WE NEED A SEASON 2, IT'S TOO GOOD TO DIE 😭😭😭
Its so good it gave me a identity crisis
This anime is pure quality production Amazing songs and specially the last episode was phenomenal people should watch this, this anime is so warming to watch
Thank you for reviewing the anime as a wholesome positive transformation, instead of some fan service trash.
I try my best to hold objective views on what I watch, no sense in watching something with the pure intention of hating it
I got caught watching it by siblings God
A modern tragedy
Still waiting for season 2
as an older brother, this anime now made me scared of my younger sister that’s smarter than me
You'd think anyone whos watched their fair share of anime wouldn't judge one based off premise alone, I was in the same boat lumping this together with "the dog show" but I was pleasantly surprised with how wholesome it really was.
I try and stay fair to things I take a look at, though any time the synopsis describes the MC as a degenerate I brace for the worst, thankfully this one turned out well
What was the dog show I wanna know so i can (actually) avoid it at all costs (I am not going to watch it I swear on my mom)
@@nobody..--.Yeah, I want to know what is “The Horny Dog Anime” so I can “avoid it”
@gaminglime6902 the difference is I actually want to avoid it you do not
It's because BIND is the GOAT
Onimai is such a blessing, I'm glad I find this anime beccause of the *"controversy"*
You know it's good when Twitter hates it xD
im exicted to watch the second season when it releases (yes it is confirmed)

I'm gonna keep it honest, this "controversial" show is Adorable, its existence isn't an issue. I just actively dislike the main fandom of this show because it's clear that a majority of them are just.. degenerates.
Eps 1 surprised me dude, good thing i had my headphone on 💀
i am grateful for them, because this show would not exist otherwise
It's so goofy and that's exactly why I like it.
*you have been recommended this video five times
*you have watched the anime
*you are caught up with the manga
*watch again?
[x]yes [ ]no
i absolutly loved the anime
thanks
I been a fan of the series since it came out and I’m glad it got the adaptation it deserved
I got this recommended, but the deep voice is what made me stay, I like that.
Lmao, thank you
the facial expression is just... Perfection
I picked this shit up randomly and loved it
This shows op song is just a banger imo. And yeah this show is a cute wholesome show and had a lot of gif usage.
Noice bro!! That anime is really good and wholesome 💖
AOTY not even joking
This show was way more tame then I expected tbh
thank you for speaking truth.
I would watch and love this in private but not publicly 😅
i like this one personally
6:59 THANK YOU
I got my gf to watch this with me around episode 2 or 3 and now Mahiro is her PHONE CASE
Never once doubted this show. Studio bind is on a killing streak, I'm gonna watch everything they make until I die.
Appreciate the kind words
It's SO ADORBZ, I love it so far. Super sweet, wholesome, and not at all as perverted as I expected it to be.
This is wholsome slice of life and i love it
I’m a year and a half late but we ball (i rewatched the anime 5 times and reread both the manga and the anthology comic 3 times, in the span of 3 months)
this is one of the first mangas i read that got an anime, and i cant be happier! Absolutly love it!
ONIMAI IS GREAT BUT NO SEASON 2
Real, SEASON 2 WHEN THE SHOW IS SO GOOD
thank you for actually watching the show before hating on it like a lot of people keep doing
i started watching this once saying im probably only gonna watch 1 episode
The reason mahiro was turned into a girl is kinda wholesome
Yapfest lmao

To me, ONIMAI was very promising even before I started watching it. And so I'm happy that you like it :D
I've watched it, and it is actually good
Watched this after seeing a funny clip not knowing what anime it was. Its good. Normally dont like this sort of premise but decided to give it a shot anyway and dont regret it in the slighest. Very wholesome. Good humor. If you need a pallet cleanser like I did (just done watching Beserk) I can recommend this series if you dont mind slice of life shows.
Honestly might give this a watch
Nice review
Much appreciated
most reviews i've seen have only watched up to the third episode anyways, which is where it fully strays from physical changes and more into social and emotional stuff
and to be fair, i was one of those people for a small time. i took a break after episode 2 because it just felt awkward. i do love mahiro's comments when the anime is clearly trying to stray from bad stuff, like 'everywhere i look is a minefield' or something along those lines
cant let gang i fw this😭
This season at first felt dry.
So ONIMAI being good was a welcome surprise.
the outro song is rly good
and also overanimated in a good way.

I WATCH IT FOR 67 TIMES 😂
i wish for season 2
Why am i late for this masterpiece of an anime.
12 episodes lasted 12 seconds 😭
Of course this can require a bit of a lifestyle change and it's always nice to have some friends who will do basic things like "teach you how to take care of your hair", or "take you shopping"
Mahiro clearly enjoys these facets of their new identity and I don't think it's unreasonable to say they are trans.
I tried to stay gender neutral in the script generally for this reason in a way. Mahiro seems to teeter on the edge of what they want to do going forward so waiting on something more concrete, which will surely be addressed at some point
@@danyul- for sure, it doesn't necessarily have to be transfem, just the idea that an alternative gender expression might help someone to do better in life.
its not transgender, its gender bender
Jokes on you, I watched the show before seeing this video!
I got so emotional after watching the first ep lmao
things i love about this anime:
1 Mahiro/this anime storyline
2 Mihari hair clip
3 I love Asahi she extremely Cute
Onimai is very wholesome, the only part where it might be the problem is the fan service and some lewd scenes, but the character developments of the show is amazingly written
And the atmosphere of the episodes shows the mood really well, this is why I love the show it’s so well drawn and scripted
now that the anime finished i`m realising just how good this show is. I`ve started reading the manga now and the anime made a lot of changes that really make it worth experiencing both. Overall i like the anime`s approach more, especially since it restructures the story to end on the satisfying note that it did.
I really hope we`ll get a second season of this. The fluff is strong with this one
Title says it all.
I expect you to have at least a couple thousand subscribers, extremely underrated!
Thank you! Much appreciated

I wish it had more episodes
I'm so happy there is actually some good reception over here in the West. It gives some hope we're not all pathetic PC dogs that only read the synopsis and the genre "genderbend", decide the anime must be transphobic and filled with pedophilia and leave a bad review based on nothing (case in point, the three bad reviews on MAL that are showcased by people who say they haven't even watched beyond episode one).
This anime 100% deserves a full second season! It's so cute, endearing and fun! The characters are just perfect and so adorable, not to mention relatable!
YES! I can truly agree and I also want another season
I need my fill of the boys
Same here i also thought i might drop this anime but after watching the first episode it's amazing with each and every episodes it becomes better and the final episode was so good. The character development of mashiro was very good and the brother sister dynamics was realistic . It was my second most favourite anime during that season only below The Magical revolution of the Reincarnation Princess and Genius young lady ❤.
