Jack Kirby will always be the King. Nobody ever came close to his creative output, and nobody will ever produce so many awesome pages, create so many different concepts and characters. The page you show around the 3 minute mark as your favorite simply explodes on pages this size. I own a complete Fourth World collection and never notice the pure awesomness of this particular splash page. Watching your videao about this book made me realize something... I (and a lot of other readers I'm sure) tend to take Kirby for granted. To read any Kirby story is a almost always a sure thing: you WILL have your mind blown away in pure action and dynamic storytelling. So, we take this as granted. This huge book makes you stop and consider each page on it's own. Mike Royer is THE best inker Kirby ever had. I even prefer him over Joe SInnott. Just imagine if Mike Royer had inked all those Vince Colletta THOR pages!?! Asgard would have been so much more glorious. Thank you again for sharing Jared.
Great video, thank you for sharing. I quite agree with you about Mike Royer and Vince Colletta. Jack Kirby (and the Queen, his sweet wife Roz' who always stood by his side, and was kind to fans; at times even making sandwiches when they would drop by their home out in Ca.), long live the King!
Yes, lots of gazing at Kirby stuff I do know the feeling. These Artists Editions are wonderful. I have the Steranko S.H.I.E.L.D edition coming in the mail, can't wait. I'll do a vid on it.
you, sir, truly understand what you are talking about. Clearly, you draw. When you talk about "organization of marks", we're talking the same language! wow.
I think the pages that are really white are those that they didn't have the original pages so they take created them from the actual comic books by scanning those pages, blew them up in B& W, thus they look really "white"....at least this is what I think the process of IDW whenever they have to deal with a page that they can't find or can't have...or don't know who has it.
Yes, you're exactly right Jared. I own the Dave Stevens Artist Edition, and that is exactly what IDW did (mark the page that they were not able to copy from the original art).
The "whiter" pages are pages where the original art was not available, so they were scanned from print proofs instead. Hence their lacking the "creamy" color from the actual art.
Yeah, I'm positive what was going on with some of those pages because in the past IDW has noted when they haven't had original art for the pages and reproduced from a photocopy instead. Some of the pages in this book are clearly not photocopies but have a lighter yellowing than the original art (could be the proof chemicals yellowing). Plus some brown stains from tape. But they also pick up some light pencil lines on occasion which print proof wouldn't so I'm not exactly sure what they are.
Probably because no one had access to the original art. As far as I know he never sold any and what was out there was stolen. So either the art doesn't exist, was in Ditko's possession, or deep in the collection of people who don't want to show it off.
@@JaredOsborn Thanks. i recall one or two pages of Kirby Challengers art showing up on ebay about 7-8 years ago/pages from Showcase 7 I believe. But, as per your reply they may very well be the only pieces. (What would they have used for all the re-issues of those same Kirby stories? Photostats? Line negatives? (I think those re-issues came out in the 80's.) Anyway, thanks for the quick response. And for this posting.

Jack Kirby is so bloody inspiring. Absolutely love his artwork!
Thanks. A lot of info here can be applied elsewhere.
Jack Kirby was blessed by the Space Gods!
Victor Hugo Carballo He sure was!
Beautiful book! Thanks for the video glimpse of it, man.

Great video - thanks so much for taking the time to show us. I will be picking this up.
I'm sure you'll like it. I've looked at it a lot this week!

Thanks for sharing this Jared. That book is really cool! Really appreciate it.
You don’t realize how incredible his line work really was until you can see the full 11x17 black and white.
It's such good stuff!

Glad you liked it and thanks for the compliment.
Hiya Jared that was freakin' awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Love this book!
amazing little book!
'Little'??? ;) *wink*
Jesus f*ckin' Christ Jack could draw...
He sure had it going on.
Who draws like Kirby.

Usually they mark the pages that aren't from original art. There isn't anything marked in this book. That's what puzzles me.

I gather that colletta's worst sin is that he would just erase backgrounds or extra characters that the didn't feel he had the time to ink.
They didn't call Colletta "Destroyer of Armies" for nothing!
LOL (albeit an unfortunate 'LOL', that guy ruined more artwork than he 'enhanced', more's the pity.)
I prefer Mike Royer’s and Joe Sinnott’s inks to Vince Collettas...
Great video, thank you!
You're welcome. Glad you liked the video.

I love the dave stevens art book he is my favorite artist of all time. that book is amazing though I like Kirbys work as well
mario rojas I don't own the Dave Stevens' one but I got to look through a friend's copy. It is an excellent one.
Anybody have any idea why there isn't a Steve Ditko artist's edition of ANYTHING?
Probably because no one had access to the original art. As far as I know he never sold any and what was out there was stolen. So either the art doesn't exist, was in Ditko's possession, or deep in the collection of people who don't want to show it off.
@@JaredOsborn Makes sense, thanks. For this fan a real disappointment.
Colletta inked several YEARS worth of THOR too. I was never a fan of his inks over Kirby.
whoa!!!!
Are there any Kirby collections in this form that only covers his non-super-hero work? (I wonder if the Kirby Challengers would fit that category?)
Not that I know of. I'm not sure if any of his Challengers artwork even still exists. DC used to destroy the original art in a lot of cases.

What are the dimensions of a page?
The book itself is about 12x17 inches. The art on the page is around 10x15 inches.
Thank you!
