This piece is from Sami Yusuf’s best selling album released in 2016, ‘Barakah’, that celebrates over one thousand years of sacred Islamic music.
‘Mast Qalandar’, which has been popular in the Indian subcontinent for centuries, is based on a poem by the scholar, Sufi poet and musical genius, Amir Khusro, and later modified by the great Punjabi Sufi poet Bulleh Shah. The song’s lyrics honor and revere (but do not worship) Ali ibn Abi Talib as well as the famous 12th century revered Sufi saint of Sindh, Lal Shahbaz Qalandar.

This is so beautifully authentic and Qawwali music at its best. I have a lot of respect for Sami Yusuf, who is doing a great job of reconnecting us all with traditional music. Keep it up!
I still am baffled by the fact that Sami Yusuf speaks Turkish, Arabic, Urdu, Persian, (and atleast here) Punjabi. Ma Sha Allah! he’s very inspirational.
