David is a trained Cantor, and was really sick with the flu in that performance. Paul Simon contacted them about it, and loved it.
David also had a lesion on his cords.

Fyi, dear Emma: David was very sick when he performed on the Conan show. I find it great, but you should go and check out the studio version with the original video. That's when David is at his best... plus the visuals are highly artistic.
True, he was pissed that they used autotuning without him knowing.

Dat was zeker niet beter. Wanneer je nagaat dat David koorts en griep had en daardoor op een kruk moest zitten omdat ze bang waren dat hij het anders niet volhield en ook problemen met zijn stembanden. Er was notabene een specialist achter de schermen voor wanneer het mis zou gaan.

Is it entirely live, though? The timpani player looks suspect. He is producing 3-4 different pitches from only two kettle drums without using a pedal to change the pitch. There is a lack of consistency between the kettle drum he strikes and the resulting pitch.
It’s also auto tuned.
