Thermos flasks, what a great invention. Keep hot things hot and cold things cold. Got tomato soup and a choc ice in mine!

Throw a small piece of beef jerky in for flavor. I met a guy that would put oat meal and hot water in his thermos before leaving for work. He said he would eat his oatmeal once he got to work. It was just about right.

I do that with oatmeal, cream of wheat, and grits.

Just remember, if you try this with a glass liner, it will explode and ruin your food with broken glass, you MUST use a 100% stainless lined thermos.

It's called thermal cooking. Thermal cookers are great. A slow cooker is good too but a different thing altogether.
A slow cooker plugs in to a power point ........A thermal cooker cooks the food with the insulated residual heat of the food.
Back in the day people made their own from a tea chest filled with straw. I bet with some materials you could find around the house .....like a esky cooler , reflective insulation...... glass fibre insolation old sleeping bag, feathers ...foam or even dirt....... combine that with a brick rocket stove and you'd have some good knowledge for cooking efficiently / treating water etc in a natural disaster.

flashdamingo I used an old Styrofoam cooler lined with thick towels, made sure the top of container was enclosed and put cooler lid back on. Kept stew boiling hot for easily 8 hours even with periodic checks to test heat. Thanks for the details!

Dude, gotta let the hot water sit sealed awhile.

No, no, no! You need to leave the hot water at least 5 minutes closed!!! Then you need to refill it again with the hot water and what ever you want, like oatmeal or rice, soup. Some foods it’s better to cook a little before to put in the thermal cookers!

You are absolutely correct. No less than 5 minutes and the water should entirely fill the thermos. Also once contents are in thermos, tighten lid and shake to mix contents and evenly distribute heat.

Olivia is correct, what she describes is preheating or priming the flask thermos. If you don't preheat the flask you lose some of the initial heat with the room temperature flask.

Gordon Ramsey and Martha Stewart says a 1.5 parts water to 1 part rice ratio is best. Your rice looked pretty mushy. I think you way overdid it on the water.

I've found out that if you soak the rice for, say, 15 mins, before cooking, you only need to add water at a 1:1 ratio.

Wouldn't bacteria grow due to the heat temperature by the time it's even cook? Yes, no?

It stays well above the food safety temps of 140F. The bigger models, anyway.
