There's no getting away from it, a great sounding guitar amplifier is a massive component in achieving great tone. Maybe even the most important component. Driving these great sounding amps with pedals has resulted some of the most iconic and inspirational guitar sounds of all-time.
But what about when you just want your amp sound to be louder? One of the challenges with boosting into the front of an amp that some pre amp gain dialled in is that even with a clean boost, the amp ends of being more distorted. Sometimes that's awesome, sometimes it's just not what you want.
Say hello the TheGigRig UnderLiner
UnderLiner sits in your amps' effects loop and gives you 2 extra master volume controls that you can set and switch instantly to get exactly the level without changing the relationship between the guitar and the preamp section of the amp. Set the 2 attenuation levels for rhythm parts and hit bypass for you solos/loud bits. The UnderLiner utilises the headroom in your amp to get you louder which we think is a fantastic way to do it.
The UnderLiner also includes a special effects loop circuit to help integrate effects into the amps fx loop ensuring no tone suck from long cable runs.
The UnderLiner is designed to sit on top of your amp using short cables to connect to your amps effects loop. The Under FS Footswitch sits on your pedalboard and not only controls the UnderLiner, but powers it as well. UnderLiner can also be switched using MIDI.

All the best
Dan & TheGigRig Team
Glad to see GigRig is finally producing their own speaker attenuator. 🎉 Cheers Dan, can’t wait to hook up this magical little attenuator up to my amp.
😂
There is a foot-switch for neighbors at home and neighbors not at home.
So you're saying I can attenuate my speaker with it?
no it's not a power soak, if you ran speaker level into it you'd blow it up. it goes in the FX loop
@@shatteredsquare so you can't use it as an attenuator?
@@funkymonk1985K oh you can, it works great as an attenuator but it's not very adjustable. I'd recommend just unplugging the cab and turning the amp up more to compensate
😂
Would be good with the new Marshall jtm studio - run it at 20 watts add this into the fx loop and have yourself a master volume seeing it doesn’t have one.
I have an idea for a pedal Dan, what is the best way to share with you?
I really appreciate you acknowledging other solutions and explaining how yours is different. I get so tired of companies that don’t do that.
Thanks Robert, absolutely, we’re all standing on the shoulders of giants in that regard 🤓🙏
You guys are going through a very prolific period as a company. So awesome!
Thanks so much James 🤓🙏
This will make the greatest attenuator between my Marshall JCM800 and slant back 4x12 😮😂😬😅😬
Here's the 1 million GBP question. Can it run true stereo effects using two amplifiers with both preamps in play, like our good friend Rabea Massaad (horn blast) would do? I would assume that the Humdinger would charge into battle for this.
Hi Ryan, for true stereo you’d need two. Thanks 🙏
...but can I plug this in between my amp and speaker cabinet? 🤔
@@craigsi16 Man, it was ironic
Yes. Please make a video of the resulting catastrophic failure of everything !
Hey folks, do you do anything that will replace the functions of my Fuchs TDS amp's footswitch? I am really interested in getting the GigRig G3 but I have a feeling it won't work with my TDS - if it will then great, I'll buy one.
Thanks Chris, if you contact Fuchs and see if they do either a MIDI or TRS converter for the footswitch functions that would be a great start. Send the info to support@thegigrig.com
Thanks 🙏
@@TheGigRigDaniel Cheers bud, will do.
Sounds great. One question. How can i use it in a wet/dry setup with both amps (voxac15, marshall 1974x), both without fx loop?
I think of using it after my gain stages -> into the underliner input-> grom underliner out into the lehle split -> into dry amp and the second signal into the wet effects and then into the wet amp?
Or do i need 2 underliners, one for each amp?
Hi, yeah, if you’re going direct into the front end then all you need to do is split after the UnderLiner and you’re set 🤓👍
Thanxs for the answer, that sounds great! Greetings from Vienna!
Hi Dan, maybe you covered this so please excuse my ignorance. If I place the Underliner in my amps effects loop would I be able to use master volume 1 to be quieter than my amp volume setting and master volume 2 to be louder than my amp volume setting? If that’s what you meant by speaker attenuation it confirms I’m an idiot. I hope I made sense. Thank you in advance.
Hi Marc. Your amp master volume would be the loudest setting, so set that for your boost, then set levels 1&2 wherever you need them 🤓👍
@@TheGigRigDaniel Ok got it, thank you so much and thank you for your awesome GigRig products!
#Voodoo....
Hard to understand if you have your Marshall 1959 100W Plexi turned up to 11 into a Full Stack, you can just attenuate the guitar input using the #GigRig #Underliner and your fire breathing dragon all of a sudden becomes quiet like a mouse, with all the gain intact and the power tubes glowing red.
That put the Underliner after yor gaon stage and create a wet loop for your delay and modulation EFx is a neat form of wizardry.
I don't know about the name #UnderLiner. #Underwhelming would have been more sarcastic as in "Your Quiet Tone is Underwhelming, considering you are playing through a Marshall Plexi 1959 100W SLP Head connected to a full stack of two 4 x 12" 1960 Cabs."
Another killer box! Once again proving that GigRig is a clear choice for pro guitarists! 🤟❤🔥🤟
Thanks so much mate 🤓🙏
Another cool gadget from GigRig, but um Dan, can I use it as a speaker attenuator?😁
🤣
Putting this in your amp's effect loop will obviously make output tube distorsion way more complicated. If you can't handle high SPL just play a lower wattage amp. It's that simple.
You guys have made some really cool devices, and I'm really loving the new aesthetics! You guys are seriously geniuses with this stuff :)
Thanks so much 🤓🙏
I've been waiting for TheGigRig to make a speaker attenuator and now the day has arrived!
Amazing! Currently using a drive pedal for underdrive and a separate pedal for solos. This will allow me to just use the amp's own drive tone!!
Yep, exactly this 🤓🙏
wow cool idea, kind of does the same thing as Neil Young's whizzer in a different way
Sweet
Can I attenuate my speaker volume with it???
😂
Looks like a mini rack effect. Maybe its time to bring back rack effects in a mini format?
Seems to be perfect for my HotRod DeVille👍
I have a fairly complex setup where I'm running into a load box and then running that through stereo effects into a power amp. This seems to be the solution I need to control my actual volume (power amp doesn't have volume controls) giving me a true clean boost.
Thanks Jim 🤓👍
Dan this is a great bit of kit. I’ve specifically been using mesa v amps for their main + solo feature and this adds this simply to every amp with an fx loop and then some. Making it midi switchable and powered from the foot switch gives everyone options. Hands down a great piece of kit.
Jeez Danny Boy!
So its a boost that has volume controls and 2 sides. Man, please let me know about these new things before they are out! Otherwise it’ll take Joanna a month to respond to the request for $. You know me. I will not share info if you ask me not to. Blessings and I wish you had someone in LA I could hire to wire my board to what’s needed. This is one, when it’s done, you’re gonna want to have record of one of the most complete and complex layered guitar rigs for any option. I don’t gig now. I’m trying to get to recording. Dan, did you see Alesis reissued the HR-16 drum machine from the 80’s? I got one and demos will be coming. I hate playing the other instruments just to produce a Song! I need Drummers in LA CA!! ❤🎉😊 Tom Adams
Thanks mate, appreciate it. Hope you’re doing ok 🤓👍
Finally, someone is making a speaker attenuator 🎉
🥰
In the past I used two resistors wired in series soldered to two 1/4" plugs and straight into FX loop in order to drop the volume.
Awesome, I need a new Attenuator.
cheers mate
You getting that tone from that fender hot rod??? Sounds great man!
Cheers mate, yep, tis a groovy thing 🤓🙏
If anything I think this will be better than an antenuatour. This is going to be perfect for bedroom practice and small gig scenarios.
thanks Ross
😂 love this
So if I'm getting this correctly, it's like having 2 master volumes for your amp, whether you have an FX loop or not ? I use 2 amps in my configuration (not simultaneously), 1 has FX loop for rehearsal or small venues (Orange OR15), the other is an old Bassman blackface for "big" stages. I have a pachbay that lets me route the signal if there's an FX loop or not. So the Underliner could possibly replace this patchbay ?
Hi Tom, depends on how you route it, but the idea is that you could have 2 extra master volumes so you could use it in the loop of the orange or into the front of the Bassman 🤓👍
Seems so obvious (when watching the vid.) ... but it needed a Dan to invent it
Congrats
Ah mate, thank you so much ☺️
Always such GREAT ideas and products from the mind of Dan-Da Man! He is the greatest gift to all guitar players!
That’s so kind Mark, really appreciate it 🤓🙏
This is great, I’ve always loved my OD sound but clean boosts afterwards have always missed something. This would solve this for me. I’ll have to save up for one. What a great idea!
Thanks so much Alex 🤓🙏
A/B under driver?
This seems perfect for my old Soldano Hot Rod’s loop. It is designed for rack gear, and some pedals struggle in it. I made a switch with a potentiometer, but my lead tone still suffered. Having the two stages and another fx loop….plus midi! Aces. Excellent concept, I think people will find very unique ways to use this.
Thanks DoubleD 🤓🙏
best attenuator ever 🤭
Great bit of kit Dan - got some really nice features which, as you say, gives a real edge over using standard EQ pedals in the loop (which I have been doing for years!). Another great use for this is to get a nice clean tone from a driven amp if there's no separate clean channel. Drop your front end input gain right down (best done with a pedal) then use the bypass mode to compensate for the loss of volume as the amp cleans up. Nice stuff!
Thanks so much, yeah, gain staging is everything 🤓🙏
HAHA - No. Always the same. No 🤣 Yet another quality product from this cracking team. Nice work lads. 🤙
Thanks so much Neil 🤓🙏
Brilliantly done GigRig! Both product and humour are great.
Cheers Gary 🙏
Awesome new product, can see tons of potential uses for it! Love that it has its own effects loop too
Just one question though, can I use it as a speaker attenuator?
🤣 thanks so much Elliot 🤓🙏
Yet another eminently useful solution! I'm currently seeking a new amp, and this hugely expands the number of amps I can choose from. As always, meticulously thought out, and super useful. Thanks again!
Ah, thanks mate, appreciate it 🤓🙏
You continue to amaze with the new equipment. Many amp effects loops are hard on pedals that don’t like line level inputs. This seems to solve that issue. Great work!
Thanks so much Scott 🤓🙏
Congrats Dan! Another winner from my favorite pedalboard inspiring company. Great idea and execution!
Cheers mate, really happy with it, for such a simple concept took a lot of work to get everything nailed down 🙏
Another cool item from people that understand gain staging and volume control! Lots of great possibilities!
Thanks so much Jerry 🙏
GET IN!!!
I wanna get this, but can I use it as a speaker attenuated?
😂
I recently got my brand new Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue and when i put my wet effects into the effects loop it has a hum coming from the amp, will this product give me an effects loop that will work the same way (4 cable method from my pedalboard) straight into the front end of the amp? Or am i dreaming 😅. I've tried separated power supply for my wet effects and even batteries but the hum wont go away. Is my new amp faulty?
Please tell me the name is an Incredibles reference!
Under Miner!!!! 🤣😂
I wonder, if I use the send/return feature, is my clean signal analog dry through?
It’s the pre amp signal, if you want a tap off point for you direct sound just stick a HumDinger in the loop 🙏
@@TheGigRigDaniel yeah, I got one of those. But I was wondering in a mono scenario, will I be able to keep my dry signal untouched and put the send/return FX in kill dry
Came in here expecting a bit of snake oil, but this is actually an amazing idea!
Thanks Gary 🙏
@@TheGigRigDaniel Im sorry I ever doubted you!
THEGIGRIG, try to make an Underliner that will do BOOST the Speaker signal and Attenuate the Speaker level with a foot switch plus have an effects loops like a lineout box. It would be nice to boost the Speaker level signal for guitar solos boosting the signal going to the speakers and able to put guitar effects between the amplifiers speaker output jack to the speaker which would need to convert speaker signal into either line level or for instrument level. Some rack mount gear in the 70's has options for instrumental level or line level at different -dB levels.
This is genius and I think can be incredibly useful. Quick question: Is the effects loop stereo?
Maaaaan this is genius! Such a great solution, all the FOH engineers will love this!
Awesome! Is there a way to make this work with 2 seperate amps in their fx loops? Or do I need 2 units in that case? Can i use midi to control two of these at the same time?
Hi Andreas. If you had a single preamp into stereo power amps you could put a HumDinger on the output, but with two separate pre/power amps you’d need two units, but you can switch them simultaneously 🤓👍
@@TheGigRigDaniel cool!
Straight on to my wish list
Thanks Mark 🙏
So, are you releasing a speaker attenuator? Lol!
Great stuff!
Thanks so much 🤓🙏
Poor internet connection cant find price?
shop.thegigrig.com/products/underliner
It's pricey but it's a really great product idea. Is the FX loop switchable in and out? Might mean I coule simplify the pedal board substantially I'll be reading on the website for sure 🤓
This sounds likes such a great solution for players who jump from At-Home to Live settings! My amps are almost always set up for their Live sounds, but that doesn't always translate to a manageable At-Home volume level....When I lower the volume for At-Home, I find I have to also adjust the eq on the amp and my pedals because the amp is no longer working at the same level it was Live....this would totally solve that issue!!
Cheers to another feat of Tonal Genius!!!!
Cheers mate, thanks so much 🤓🙏
