  • Ironically, I was asked a couple of questions that had me contemplating my decision to get out of the United States Marine Corps. Whether it was a good or bad decision or if I was mistreated or not, I stand by my choices.

When I went into the Corps in 80 it was my dream of a life time!! I finished bootcamp promoted I was a E4 in 2 years..but when I got to my new command in Hawaii shot went down hill in 83 due to leadership that had a vendetta against me..due to I was not a drinking buddy with the company Gunny..he did everything he could to keep me from getting my Sgt stripes due to me being the first 1833 to attend SULC school..were they sent me and said if I failed the course for grunts and other combat arms they were going to demote me to lance..but instead I took honor student and was to be promoted to sgt. Which they did not due and gave my promotion to his daughter soon to be husband..and that then started my rebellion against my command..And 1stci got the c.o relieved..Due to they tried to right me up for using gas out of a company gas can in which a sgt took and said I said he could the sgt was a buddy of the gunny..So at office hours I requested a court Marshall and knew the Battlon commander which was at are SULC school graduation. And he was not impressed with what they investigated and the xo and company gunny were relieved for false charges..and then I was selected for embassy duty and decided that the Corp was a big farce on integrity and doing the right thing!! So I got out in 84..but in 05 went into the guard became a highly decorated Cav scout with 4 combat tours and was medically retired in 14 at 100%!! And contacted him when I was out and told him what I thought of him..! Nothing like punking out a retired SgtMaj..lol

Brother, everything happens for a reason. Some people that join aren't cut for the military life. Some times its just time to move on to other things in life. Always treasure the fact that you earned the title Marine. You did something that 99 percent of people can't say. Stay strong and move forward with your life and family. Fair winds and following seas. GySgt USMC retired.

Thanks for sharing your USMC story, Devil-dawg - I commend you. I was in the Corps for 1 enlistment - 1995-1999. Like most Lance Coolies, as you know, I couldn’t wait to get out after 4 years for many reasons. However, as a civilian, I too missed the structure and the brotherhood that is irreplaceable in the Marines. After being a civilian and unable to adjust to my new life, I tried to go back in (as an Officer this time) but was disqualified due to a “bad heart” at MEPS. Bro, I was devastated and disappointed. I became bitter for some time. Maybe I should have looked at other branches but I didn’t. Years have gone by, and I’m good now - A little fatter but good, lol. God had different plans for me. “Once a Marine, always a Marine” ...and that’s fine by me, Oorah. Semper Fi and keep your head up. Peace out bro. Laterz.

Well said brother. Semper Fi and I got out due to bad toxic leadership but I realized I could have just re-enlisted to go to another duty station but I also thought after deploying and always being away it was time to get some down time. I sort of regret ever getting out but then the Army callled my name and I did 8 more years and got medically retired. But I will never forget my time in the Corps.

Leadership matters. After 9 years, I left active duty... Then, 10 years later, I returned and did another 11 years and retired. After 20 years in multiple joint deployments, the Marines on the whole develops great leaders, but there's some that are horrible. THE worst leader I had was a Marine. THE best leaders were the young Marine NCO's, old SNCO's, and generals.

Great vid and truthfully, Esprit de Corps is what drives us (the brotherhood of being a Marine). Remember the Marine Corps is an extension of political enforcement and despite our ethos, it can be disappointing because they’re following orders/tempted for political position/rank. If you haven’t seen the movie Semper Fi Always Faithful-a retired MSgt. Jerry Ensminger lost his 9 year daughter to leukemia; it was later divulged that the Marine Base in Camp Lejeune knew they were leaking benzene/other hazardous chemicals into the water supply for 30+ years. It took the MSgt 13-14 years of vigilance and determination to win and the Marine Corps/DOD finally acknowledged an issue with no accountability. 1955-1985 (years of contamination with over 1.1 million cases of infected people from the water) and early 1980’s were the first cases of “male breast cancer”. And the absurd thing is naming the law after his dead daughter is some return respect by the Marine Corps? As if any amount of money or law substantiates losing a precious child. It is the ideals of our fallen brothers, devotion to family and those that have lived the Esprit de Corps (my uncle was a Sgt Major from WWII & Korea-30 years) that continues the positive values of our citizen lives. Semper Fi & Ductus Exemplo, brother.

Thank you for your service, many of us have a story similar to yours and we understand the difficulties you went through and your pain.
Getting out of the core, especially in the current era, was probably a big giant blessing for you, because there's absolutely no way that the military should behaving like that towards Patriots that volunteered their time and their life to put it all on the line for the rest of us.
The problems you faced have plagued the military for many decades now, but it's becoming even worse an intentionally so by this illegitimate and traitorous government people are currently forced to train and live under.
There will always be some benefit two having trained in the military and I hope you don't ever let anybody take that from you, including the military.
    God Bless!

Wow, that was some story. It is so sad to love something and be essentially rejected by it. I've never been in the military, but have read hundreds of non fiction military books as I find them fascinating, and inspiring and I've always been struck by the common experience of that deep brotherhood. That is an experience that pretty much exists nowhere in civilian life, which is such a shame. I just rewatched "Generation Kill" (Marine Recon in the invasion of Iraq) the other day, not sure how accurate, but a lot of the real guys were in the series. It was hard to watch at times and made you question things. I've often regretted not being in the military, but from what I can see, I would not come out of that experience in a good place so probably just as well. I mean, c'mon man, I worry about stepping on lizards so.... That whole thing has to have made a little hole in your heart to love it, want it, but be divorced from it. Serious story there.

Even after they didnt trust you or whoever at that time or position didnt, the fact you STILL love the marine and the marine core, shows a testament about your character and ethics. You are such a great example for all of us, being positive and not hating on something because of an incident.
I can attest you still love the marines. Oh yes....While working with you brother in 2015, youve always used examples what the marines taught you with mental/physical and how we can apply those mindsets in our work that would create the best versions out of us (me being the first one to listen). Rather it be at the gym or at work. Remember? I showed you the pull up video from the gym, i was so excited I’m like ok 20 push ups here it is, Daniel has to see this, and Daniel does, and he said “Good, but this is wrong, go back and do it again, you didnt go down all the way, thats how marines do it” i was like “....” lol went back the next day made a NEW video while being sore and did it) You have Always motivated everyone around you!
also... hearing on how the exit happened, I believe its the will of God. The fact you are here, safe and smiling with the fam, big blessing. This video is very touching, your are passionate, devoted, and the most dedicated person i know in my life, and what happened to you during that time, must’ve been tough. In the Army, it’s more laid back, and you get to concentrate on your job, and get promoted on your job performance, rather kissing some NCO’s ass, to get promoted. I would just recommend to anyone that’s joining the military, just pick an MOS job that will benefit you in the long run, so when you do decide to get out, you’ll have at least a basic knowledge of your job description, so when you do go to civilian school to learn more on your job type, you’ll be ahead of the game. 🤷🏾

I am so sad and sorry for that horrific turn of events that derailed your career. But, let me say this.... You are blaming, and hating the "Marine Corp" Establishment as a whole for the actions of those investigators/interrogators who didn't believe you. In short, you let your hurt, rage, and upset spill over to the entire Marine Corp/establishment, as you call it. When it should have been contained and confined to the people who were the bad actors. In fact, you should have stayed in, and hauled the investigators into a review/disciplinary hearing!! PS! I speak from experience! I got hauled into CID once!! But, they closed their case with no findings. I didn't let it sour me..... I went on to full retirement. You could have too!!!
